Promoting Access To Archival Information On The Amish, Emily Erdlen
Summer Scholarship, Creative Arts and Research Projects (SCARP)
The Elizabethtown College Hess Archives contains a wealth of Amish research materials and scholarship. This project, spanning nine weeks, served to add materials to the Hess Archives to be used for research on the Amish. Student Emily Erdlen, under archivist Rachel Grove Rohrbaugh, processed newly donated materials relating to a variety of Amish groups. The project led to a six-box addition to the Donald B. Kraybill Collection and the processing of two new collections, the Ben Riehl Collection and the Karen M. Johnson-Weiner Papers. Kraybill and Johnson-Weiner are both scholars who have studied Amish culture, and Riehl is an Amish …

Archival Processing Science, Stefanie A. Caloia
Archival Processing Science, Stefanie A. Caloia
Reuther Library Scholarly Publications
Archival collections come in all sizes, formats, and subjects, and it is impossible for any archival education program to cover all situations that professional archivists encounter. Proper planning is essential to processing and paramount when a collection comprises hundreds of linear feet, yet it is often difficult to develop and implement processing plans when drawing on your experience alone. This presentation details a method of conducting a pre-archival processing survey that can be useful through all processing stages, as well as some additional tips on handling archival materials.

Despite the ease of creation, the web is ephemeral. The fleeting nature of websites present a challenge to repositories when a record needs to be preserved. The Graduate Center Library was recently presented with this challenge with the increase of submissions of online components to dissertations. This presentation focused on the need to capture a snapshot, the limitations of current normative practices and some alternative approaches.

Internship And Practicum Requirements In Archival Education, Gavin T. Strassel, Meghan M. Courtney
Reuther Library Scholarly Publications
Archivists have long debated the nature of archival internships and practicum requirements as components of archival education. Advocates cite these requirements as the best way for emerging archivists to acquire hands-on training, while critics worry they can be used to further student exploitation and a devaluation of professional archivists’ labor. This presentation examined requirements in graduate archives programs and compared them to accepted guidelines for internships in the archives profession and the American economy at large. These presentations draw on original survey data collected by the presenters from educational programs listed on the Society of American Archivists’ Directory of Archival …

Designing And Preserving Special Collections, Sharon Bradley, Suzanne R. Graham
Presentations
Our collections' unique holdings can make the greatest impact to scholarship, and yet our special collections often suffer from a lack of staff expertise to preserve and describe unusual formats. An experienced special collections cataloger and a special collections librarian will share the basics of standards-based cataloging and preservation of these formats. Program will include hands-on practice with creating a metadata record for a manuscript and a photograph collection (with attention paid to perceived impact of RDA).
