An Analysis Of Residential Camp Site Structure !Or Two Early Archaic Assemblages From Rose Island (40mr44), Tennessee, Larry R. Kimball

The site structure of two Early Archaic period assemblages is defined through spatial analysis of artifact and facility distributions at the Rose Island site (40MR44) in the lower Little Tennessee River valley. These assemblages derive from well controlled excavation of deeply buried alluvial deposits attributable to LeCroy (c. 6100-6500 B.C.) and St. Albans (c. 6600-7000 B.C.) temporal units. Spatial patterning is detected using multivariate statistical analysis of formal implement, instant tool, and debitage categories. The observed spatial patterns are interpreted through a comparison with expected spatial patterns generated from an a priori model of hunter-gatherer residential camp activity structure. The …

After briefly placing barbecue cookery in its proper historical perspective as a traditional method of food preparation, this study describes from an ethnographic viewpoint the methodologies and attitudes of two traditional barbecue cooks, Rev. E. J. Jones of Columbus, Kentucky, and Woody Smith of Arlington, Kentucky, the commercial establishments in which they cook and the role of this form of folk cookery in the area in which these men are located. Transcribed naridtives from the community of Nobob (Barren County), Kentucky, and its surroundings. The narratives were tape recorded between October, 1977 and November, 1978. Interpretation is offered in the form of an introduction, which includes a brief history of the area and a discussion of genre and annotations to the narratives. Annotations make use of standard bibliographical reference works and archival sources available at Western Kentucky University.

The narratives are divided into legend, tale, and personal experience stories. A number of the narratives refer specifically to the Great Depression. The collection seeks to particularly demonstrate the presence of valuable historical …

English-language texts associated with fiddle and banjo in the southern United States are described and then indexed for comparative reference. The fiddle songs are typically humorous, very brief, highly variable and disunified. The same is true of many banjo songs associated with the banjo. Ballads in the fiddle and the banjo repertory are not indexed if previously catalogued by Child or Laws.

Fiddle and banjo songs are defined as texts associated with fiddle or banjo playing, either through instrumental accompaniment or because informants mentally associate them with the fiddle or banjo. Various ways of performing the songs are enumerated, with …

The Determination Of A Relative Chronology For A Surface Archeological Site Using The Obsidian Hydration Dating Method, Scott Preston Thomas

This methodological study is an attempt to develop relative chronologies for surface archaeological sites from the obsidian hydration analysis of waste flake samples. Two sites in southeastern Oregon were selected and their surface components sampled. The results of the obsidian hydration analysis indicate, that with the use of random sampling methods and general geochemical control, a fairly accurate representation of the history of an archaeological surface site can be obtained.

Woodland Occupation In The Upper Coastal Plain Of South Carolina: An Archeological Reconnaissance Of The Carolina Power And Light Company's Lake Robinson To Sumter 230 Kv Transmission Line Corridor, Veletta Canouts

An archeological reconnaissance of the Lake Robinson to Sumter 230 kV transmission line used a probabilistic sampling design and predictive modeling to generate expectations about the nature of the archeological record in the upper Coastal Plain of South Carolina. The 62-km long corridor parallels the Fall Line sandhills. Six sites and three isolated finds were located in survey transects which comprised approximately 25% of the total corridor. Three historic sites were located on the better drained upland soils, conducive to the agrarian settlement in the area. Four of the prehistoric sites were identified as Woodland. Anthropological concepts, which have been taken out of context and applied without full understanding, have been misused by historians of colonial North America. Part of the difficulty is due to the normal hazards of incorporating the work of another field in one's own; and part is due to the reluctance of historians to employ monothematic explanations. This latter difficulty has led historians to favor those concepts of anthropology which are not easily measured.

Folklife scholars often produce work which is valuable to outdoor museums and historic sites. Folklife scholars deal with functional, contextual, emic, and interdisciplinary studies--all approaches which produce valuable interpretive data for museums and sites. This thesis is an example of folklife work designed for use in the museum field.

Outdoor museums and historic sites are increasingly involved with the interpretation of social and emotional life. Because it is a social and emotional event, dance can be a valuable part of this interpretation.

This study is concerned with the ascription of pariah student identity and how this possibly relates to the low level of education attainment in rural Appalachia. The informal social organization and educational ethos of a rural school in eastern Tennessee, Rock Hill (k-7), is examined with respect to the school's influence on premature student withdrawal.

Data were collected over an eight month period during which the author employed participant observation and other ethnographic research techniques. In 1973 folklorist Jan Brunvand presented a definition of modern folkloristics that challenged folklorists to take an eclectic approach to the study of traditional culture by employing theoretical and methodological approaches from a variety of disciplines including communications. This thesis represents one effort at addressing part of this challenge by discussing specific folklore and folklife objectives and how still photography can be incorporated in the research process.

Test excavations of the Tankersley Creek Site, 41TT108, in Titus County, Texas, uncovered a multi-component campsite ranging in time from the Early La Harpe Aspect to Caddo IV times. Component I was the earliest recognized occupation and was characterized by slightly expanding stem dart points. Component II followed Component I and was recognized by a dominance of Large Gary dart points. Component III appeared to represent an early Caddo I occupation and contained Small Gary points and decorated pottery that is usually affiliated with the Caddo I Period. Interestingly, this component lacked the Alba arrowpoints normally found in sites of …

The Averbuch Skeletal Series: A Study Of Biological And Social Stress At A Late Mississippian Period Site From Middle Tennessee, Hugh Edward Berryman

The purpose of this study was to examine the biological and social evidence of stress at the Averbuch site (40DV60), a late Mississippian Period Middle Cumberland Culture village from the Nashville Basin in Middle Tennessee. Recent excavation of this site produced one of the largest systematically excavated skeletal series from Tennessee. The majority of burials were recovered from three cemeteries which could be aligned temporally. It was hoped that analysis of this skeletal series would illuminate conditions which contributed to the late prehistoric decline and ultimate disappearance of the Middle Cumberland people from the Nashville area.

Dermatoglyphic Variability In Armenian Fingertips And Palms: A Directional Asymmetry Approach To Identify Developmental Stress, Cleone Hart Hawkinson

The dermatoglyphic variability of the fingertips and palms of an Armenian sample was investigated. The sample consisted of 228 stressed and unstressed individuals. Prenatal stress due to severe physical and nutritional deprivation was not recorded in the developing dermal ridge system in the form of increased directional asymmetry or variation in ridge breadth. No intergenerational effect of stress on the dermal ridge system was identified. A new palmar variable, b-c ridge breadth, was developed and incorporated into the analysis.

This study focuses upon dance events, those occasions which have as their purpose the convening of persons to square dance or play party games which resemble square dances. Four different forms of these events were identified in Trigg County, Kentucky: neighborhood dances, play-parties, picnics and barbecues and public dances. I have described them from a historical perspective, examining the social interactions that occurred during the events.

The major portion of the information presented was gathered through interviews with current and past residents of this county. The descriptions span the years from the turn of the twentieth century to the 1970s. …

The A-B Dermatoglyphic Ridge Breadth: An Indication Of Developmental Significance, Anne Hawkins Prisock

The purpose of this study was threefold: to present a-b ridge breadth data on various populations; to synthesize factors influencing the a-b ridge breadth; and to suggest areas of developmental significance which are important in the a-b ridge breadth determination. The a-b ridge breadths of ten sample groups representing Whites, Blacks, Amerindians, and Indians were collected and determined.

The mean a-b ridge breadths were determined for each of the ten sample populations. These a-b ridge breadths were compared with previously published a-b ridge breadth data. The primary procedure used in data analysis was analysis of variance (ANOVA). The groups were …
