Freak Show Images From The Ron Becker Collection, Robert Bogdan
Freak Show Images From The Ron Becker Collection, Robert Bogdan
The Courier
This article details the rise of freak shows from 1840 to 1940 in America, drawing from the extensive collection found in the Ron Becker Collection in the Syracuse University Special Collections. The exhibits played upon the superstitions and prejudices of popular American culture, and every exhibit was a fraud of some sort. The photographs of these "human curiosities" fascinated Ron Becker, who amassed a collection of the photos, mostly from the photographers Charles Eisenmann and Frank Wendt.

The Imperishable Perishable Press, Terrance Keenan
The Courier
When art and meaning come together so effectively, when craft and purpose meld so well, something precious emerges. Of the many one-of-a-kind things in the world, few have a memorable identity. In the work of Walter Hamady the art of bookmaking explores new terrain. The finished product is not a candidate for the museum or the gallery. It holds something for the eye and the mind both, something that was created by human hands to be held by human hands. Often beautiful, always different and provocative, the books of the Perishable Press are durable reminders of the creative spirit at …

Excavations At Site 41bx773: Cultural Resource Investigations Along Huebner Road, In San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, Alan J. Wormser
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Test excavations were conducted at Site 41BX773 by Alan J. Wormser of the cultural resources staff at the Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) between September 23, and September 25, 1987. The site was a workshop/quarry site where chert nodules eroding out of the limestone bedrock were being tested, broken up, and carried away to outlying campsites. A lack of diagnostic artifacts prevents assigning the site to any particular set of time periods. The portion of the site south of Huebner Road has been destroyed by construction of an apartment complex. The deposits on the north side …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The investigations of four prehistoric sites in southwest-central Texas allow for research hypotheses relevant to regional questions, particularly the study of cultural changes between the Archaic and Late Prehistoric periods. The sites considered within this report are three campsites, two evidencing significant Late Prehistoric components, the other with primarily Archaic components, and a chert cobble quarry.
The contract mitigation efforts provided surface and subsurface samples that allowed a descriptive and spatially detailed summary of the materials recovered. This data base, which includes information on tool assemblages, lithic reduction technologies, faunal, floral, and invertebrate resources along with a series of radiocarbon …

An Archaeological And Historical Assessment Of The Vista Verde South Project, San Antonio, Texas, Joseph H. Labadie
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The Vista Verde South project area has borne witness to much of the economic development that has occurred in downtown San Antonio since the early years of Texas' statehood. As with many other areas of San Antonio, economic interests stimulated early development. Following the Civil War, this area became an integral part in San Antonio's flourishing freight hauling and transportation network. By the turn of the 20th century, the area had developed into an ethnically diverse, middle-class neighborhood, while just a few blocks away, San Antonio's infamous Red Light District thrived. The Great Depression of 1929 struck a critical blow …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Testing of Site 41BL260 along the proposed FM 93 realignment in Be11 County, Texas was undertaken in December 1987 to determine the site's eligibility for inclusion within the National Register of Historic Places, and to determine site depth, cultural context, and archaeological significance. The site is located in a plowed field near the eastern outskirts of Belton, Texas. Testing results indicate that the site is limited to the present plow zone and that no intact cultural deposits remain within the proposed right-of-way. Evidence recovered does not support a determination of eligibility for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.

Archaeological Testing Of Sites 41cj75 And 41cj76 Comanche County, Texas, Wayne C. Young
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Archaeological testing of two sites in western Comanche County, 41CJ75 and 41CJ76, by the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) during April 1987 has shown that both sites are shallow, low density, prehistoric campsites. Portions of both sites outside the right-of-way of SH 36 have been impacted by cultivation and site integrity has been lost. Those portions within the right-of-way are located within steep backslopes which made testing difficult. Site 41CJ75 was found to be only 10 cm deep except where the SDHPT had placed recent fill on the site. Site 41CJ76 was located along a very steep …
