The American political system is characterized by its two-party structure. However, apparently American faith in the status-quo democracy is faltering. With advancing technology, Americans are gaining greater access to political information, and tools such as the Internet are proving to be useful and versatile in the political arena. The elections of this decade have already been touched by the effects of the Internet, and groups such as the revolutionary cyberparties show promise of reshaping the party politics in this country. The current two-party system is in jeopardy of being replaced by one that is more democratic.

Do Electoral Systems Matter?: Candidate And Organizational Activity In U.S. Local Elections Under Cumulative Voting, Districting, And At-Large, Tracy Sulkin

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

This study compares candidate and organizational activity in U.S. local elections under cumulative voting, districting, and at-large electoral arrangements. Candidates' campaign activities and their evaluations of their electoral system were measured with a mail survey conducted in the spring and summer of 1996 and winter of 1997. Preliminary results indicate that electoral systems have a negligible impact on the ways in which candidates contest elections.

The Death Penalty And Public Opinion, Eve Errickson

In this research, I will examine public opinion on the death penalty from 1972 to the present. In doing so, I will show that as the awareness of violence and crime increases, support for the death penalty increases. I intend by the consideration of prevalent trends and ideas over the past twenty-five years to show that awareness of crime and prejudice against ethnic groups traditionally associated with crime often dictates public opinion of the death penalty. As these tendencies become more apparent, it will become clear that the Supreme Court's confidence in mitigating and aggravating factors are not entirely valid, …
