Farmers’ Adoption And Perceived Benefits Of Diversified Crop Rotations In The Margins Of U.S. Corn Belt, Tong Wang, Jin Hailong, Yubing Fan, Oladipo Obembe, Dapeng Li
Economics Faculty Publications
Monoculture and simplified two-crop rotation systems compromise the ecosystem services essential to crop production, diminish agricultural productivity, and cause detrimental effects on the environment. In contrast to the simplified two-crop rotation, diversified crop rotation (DCR) refers to rotation systems that contain three or more crops. Despite multiple benefits generated by DCR, its usage has dwindled over the past several decades. This paper examined determinants of farmers' adoption decisions and perceived benefits of DCR in the west margins of the U.S. Corn Belt where crop diversity has declined. We analyzed 708 farmer responses from a farmer survey conducted in the eastern …
Discontinued Voluntary Price Reports For Live Cattle: Will They Be Missed By Producers?, Scott Fausti, He Sun, Matthew Diersen
Discontinued Voluntary Price Reports For Live Cattle: Will They Be Missed By Producers?, Scott Fausti, He Sun, Matthew Diersen
Economics Staff Paper Series
One consequence of federal mandatory livestock price reporting regulations for the cattle industry was the discontinuation of eight regional voluntary price reports for slaughter cattle. The economic implication for market transparency in those affected regional markets is investigated. Agricultural Marketing News Services data were collected from discontinued price reports for a five-year period, along with aggregated regional price reports that were not eliminated under the new price reporting regime. Both sets of price reports were analyzed to determine if any of the price series, which continued to be published as mandatory reports, could be used by producers as a replacement …
Feedlot Manure Nutrient Loadings On South Dakota Farmland, Donald Taylor, Diane Rickerl
Feedlot Manure Nutrient Loadings On South Dakota Farmland, Donald Taylor, Diane Rickerl
Economics Staff Paper Series
A key determinant of whether livestock manure is an asset or liability in agricultural production and to society more generally is the amount of manure produced relative to the nearby farmland area to which the manure can be economically transported for application. The objectives of the study reported in this article are to (1) estimate levels of manure nutrient (nitrogen = N and phosphorus = P) loadings on the cropland and rangeland associated with 78 feedlot farm operations in South Dakota and (2) determine factors, including size-of-feedlot and cropland hectarages, associated with cropland N and P loadings for the feedlots …

Determining A "Fair" Beef Cow Lease Agreement When Risk Is Considered, Dillon Feuz
Determining A "Fair" Beef Cow Lease Agreement When Risk Is Considered, Dillon Feuz
Economics Staff Paper Series
This publication is intended to illustrate a method of determining a fair lease agreement. The budget and coefficients were representative of a particular resource base in 1989. Individual producers may have very different costs and production coefficients for their cow herds. As author, I do not wish to imply that lease agreements should be based on the same proportion of receipts as depicted in this example budget. There also is an example of a written lease agreement in an appendix at the end of the manuscript. This is only an example to illustrate the type of issues the two parties …
Retained Ownership Revisited: The Economic Significance Of Genetic Variability, Dillon Feuz, John Wagner, Larry Held
Retained Ownership Revisited: The Economic Significance Of Genetic Variability, Dillon Feuz, John Wagner, Larry Held
Economics Staff Paper Series
Genetic and biological variability of calves placed into different retained ownership programs are examined. The genetic ability to grade choice is a critical factor influencing profitability of retaining calves to a slaughter weight. Weaning weight influences the type of retained ownership program for which a calf will be most profitable.
