Sustainability remains a challenge for technology manufacturers struggling to integrate environmental priorities into core operations. This issue is critical for technology manufacturing managers who must embed sustainability into organizational systems and decision-making processes to meet rising expectations from regulators, investors, and consumers. Sustainability planning in small suburban cities, particularly as it relates to waste management programs, remains an underexplored area in scholarly research. Without long-term planning, these cities often react to issues in a fragmented manner rather than implementing proactive policies, negatively affecting public health and well-being. In Northern Virginia alone, over 90,000 people are food insecure. The USDA has reported strong correlations between food insecurity and negative health outcomes. This study explores the relationship between voluntary sustainability reporting and corporate financial performance, focusing on the influence of stakeholders on sustainability initiatives. The research uses legitimacy and stakeholder theories, drawing from signaling and institutional theories, to examine the impact of sustainability initiatives on financial results. The analysis was conducted on United States aerospace and defense companies listed in the Fortune 500, and Bloomberg’s ESG database. The independent variables included GRI-2019 – GRI-2022, stakeholders influence “STAKE,” firm size, and growth. The dependent variables were return on assets and Tobin’s Q.
