Political Science Faculty Articles and Research
Background
Air pollution is a leading public health concern around the world. Assessing the public's knowledge about air quality is critical to calibrate public health interventions. However, previous efforts to measure knowledge about air quality (AQIQ) have not relied on consistent and validated measures, thus precluding cross-country comparisons. We aimed to develop a robust scale to assess AQIQ and tested it in multiple countries. Methods
To evaluate the psychometric properties and select the best performing items out of 10 AQIQ questions, we used methods from classical test theory and item response theory. We evaluated the scales using several scalability measures, …Silver Bow Creek/Butte Area Npl Site, Trec Inc., A Woodard And Curran Company

Plastic Recycling Is Inefficient And Expensive, Clark S. Adomaitis
Plastic Recycling Is Inefficient And Expensive, Clark S. Adomaitis
Capstones
Plastics production and incineration contributes more than 850 million metric tons to the emissions that are causing climate change. Emissions are growing at a moment when scientists and world leaders are in agreement that they need to dramatically decrease. Environmentalists say that plastic production makes up 4.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. New plastic plants opening in the U.S. do not line up with emission reduction goals.
At the end of plastics’ lives, a lot of what we’re putting into our recycling bins isn’t getting recycled. In fact, only 18% of trash from New York City homes is actually recycled. …

Assessing The Potential For Lightning-Induced Damage In Commercial Broiler Houses In Mississippi And Alabama, Matthew R. Rowland
Assessing The Potential For Lightning-Induced Damage In Commercial Broiler Houses In Mississippi And Alabama, Matthew R. Rowland
Theses and Dissertations
Modern broiler houses are expensive to build, maintain, and insure. Protecting them from extreme weather events is a major concern to producers, integrators, and insurance companies. Lightning strikes can cause catastrophic fires and electrical damage and can lead to costly bird losses. A greater understanding of the impact of lightning on the commercial broiler industries of MS and AL is needed. The objectives of this research were collection of baseline resistance data for broiler houses and equipment in both states, and mapping lightning strike densities across MS and AL, evaluating annual, monthly, seasonal, and diurnal patterns. 63.5% of surveyed broiler …

In 2020, residences used 16.5% of all final energy in the United States, and residences were responsible for 19.3% of all U.S. CO2 emissions. Calvin ENGR 333 students partnered with Habitat for Humanity to tackle the issue of carbon emissions when designing their homes. Habitat for Humanity for Kent County is endeavoring to design homes that reduce energy consumption, energy expenditures, and carbon emissions. They are embarking upon a “carbon footprint build” that will minimize energy consumption and carbon emissions, both during construction and across the lifetime of their new Habitat for Humanity homes. This semester, the senior mechanical engineering …

Habitat for Humanity (HFH) requested a carbon footprint analysis of their most recent home build. Mark Ogland-Hand, a representative of HFH, connected with Professor Heun’s ENGR 333 students to perform the carbon footprint analysis on their new low carbon house. Assuming Consumer’s Energy will incorporate their predicted percentage of renewables into their electric grid, the London home reduces projected carbon emissions by 18% when compared to a “To Code” house over a 25 year lifespan. For the current Consumer’s Energy grid, the “Improved” London house is shown to reduce projected carbon emissions by 30% when compared to the current London …

Environmental Science and Geology Faculty Research Publications
Root-microbiome interactions are of central importance for plant performance and yield. A distinctive feature of legumes is that they engage in symbiosis with N2-fixing rhizobia. If and how the rhizobial symbiotic capacity modulates root-associated microbiomes are still not yet well understood. We determined root-associated microbiomes of soybean inoculated with wild type (WT) or a noeI mutant of Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens USDA 110 by amplicon sequencing. UPLC-MS/MS was used to analyze root exudates. The noeI gene is responsible for fucose-methylation of Nod factor secreted by USDA 110 WT strain. Soybean roots inoculated with the noeI mutant showed a significant decrease …

They have established a goal of a “low carbon footprint build” that will minimize energy consumption and carbon emissions, both during construction and across the lifetime of the house. Habitat for Humanity (HFH) built a low-carbon home at 726 London Street SW. Mark Ogland-hand, a representative of HFH, connected with Professor Matthew Heun to begin a carbon study of this new home with the goals of understanding the carbon footprints of a traditional HFH home, the London home, and future improvements feasible for HFH to make in reducing the carbon emissions of their houses.
