Feral Deer In The Suburbs: An Emerging Issue For Australia?, Shelley Burgin, Mariama Mattila, Daryl Mcphee, Tor Hundloe

Tor Hundloe

Deer are not endemic to Australia, but were introduced for game and aesthetics between the early 18th and 20th centuries. Until recent decades, most deer descended from these introductions. Before the 1970s when deer numbers and distribution expanded dramatically, farming was a modest enterprise. With the collapse of farming in the 1990s, large numbers of deer were deliberately released and translocated. Feral numbers and herds have subsequently expanded, and are increasingly encroaching on urban areas. As a new issue in Australia, views toward feral deer are polarized and span “welcome guest” to “major pest.” The emerging urban deer issues need …

Towards Agent-Oriented Approach To A Call Management System, Amir Ashamalla, Ghassan Beydoun, Graham Low Dec 2012

Towards Agent-Oriented Approach To A Call Management System, Amir Ashamalla, Ghassan Beydoun, Graham Low

Associate Professor Ghassan Beydoun

There is more chance of a completed sale if the end customers and relationship managers are suitably matched. This in turn can reduce the number of calls made by a call centre reducing operational costs such as working time and phone bills. This chapter is part of ongoing research aimed at helping a CMC to make better use of its personnel and equipment while maximizing the value of the service it offers to its client companies and end customers. This is accomplished by ensuring the optimal use of resources with appropriate real-time scheduling and load balancing and matching the end …

Simreef: An Agent-Based Model To Address Coastal Management Issues In The Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, Pascal Perez, A Dray, Deborah Cleland, Jesus Ernesto Arias-Gonzalez

Professor Pascal Perez

The northernmost part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef (MBR) runs along the eastern Yucatan peninsula (Mexico). Over two decades, sprawling coastal tourism development and over-exploitation of marine resources have considerably reduced fringing reef’s ecological functions. SimReef is an interactive model designed to better understand the interactions between regional and local drivers strongly influencing the health of coral reefs. SimReef’s development follows a collective design approach and an inductive process whereby dynamics are represented by data-driven relationships. Experts and stakeholders participate to the designing phase in order to help calibrating the model and to support a consensual validation of the results.

Visual Information Processing And Content Management: An Overview, Philip Ogunbona Sep 2012

Visual Information Processing And Content Management: An Overview, Philip Ogunbona

Professor Philip Ogunbona

Visual information processing and the management of visual content has become a significant part of contemporary economy. The visual information processing pipeline is divided into several modules including, (i) capture and enhancement, (ii) efficient representation for storage and transmission, (iii) processing for efficient and secure distribution, and, (iv) representation for efficient archiving and retrieval. Advances in semiconductor technology and optimum signal processing models and algorithms, provide tools to improve each module of the processing pipeline. Insight from other areas of study including psychology augments and informs the models being developed to understand and design efficient visual content management systems. The …

The Planet Of The Thinking Animal: Surviving The 21st Century, Tor Hundloe Jul 2010

The Planet Of The Thinking Animal: Surviving The 21st Century, Tor Hundloe

Tor Hundloe

"Tor Hundloe presents us with two options: change the way we live, or find two more planets to support the world's burgeoning population. With the powerful energy of clever optimism he points the way for this Earth-only option to succeed" (Senator Bob Brown). "We humans are capable of brilliant ideas and inventions, but we have yet to learn the lessons that will prove that we deserve our place on the planet as the thinking animal." (Backcover). The Planet of the Thinking Animal looks to particular countries and groups of countries and examines their economic and environmental policies and activities. It …

Business Sustainability And Undergraduate Management Education In Australia, Josie Fisher, Ingrid Bonn Jul 2010

Business Sustainability And Undergraduate Management Education In Australia, Josie Fisher, Ingrid Bonn

Ingrid Bonn

There is a large and rapidly expanding academic literature arguing that there is an urgent requirement for businesses to become more sustainable. There is also a demonstrated need for managers to develop a better understanding of sustainability and the appropriate strategies required to improve business sustainability. In addition, there are international calls for educators to address sustainability in their programs. The aim of this study was to investigate the extent to which business sustainability is being incorporated into undergraduate business and management courses in Australian universities. The high percentage of international students enrolled in these courses suggests our findings have …
