Software Tools For Large Scale Interactive Hydrodynamic Modeling, Gennadii Donchyts, Fedor Baart, Arthur Van Dam, Bert Jagers, Sander Van Der Pijl

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Running hydrodynamic models interactively allows both visual exploration and change of model state during simulation. One of the main characteristics of an interactive model is that it should provide immediate feedback to the user, for example respond to changes in model state or view settings. For this reason, such features are usually only available for models with a relatively small number of computational cells, which are used mainly for demonstration and educational purposes. It would be useful if interactive modeling would also work for models typically used in consultancy projects involving large scale simulations. This results in a number of …

The Jefferson Project is a collaboration between the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, IBM, and the FUND for Lake George aimed at understanding and managing complex factors (road salt, storm water runoff, invasive species) threatening Lake George, New York.

Lake George is located about 80 km north of Albany in upstate New York and is known internationally for its water clarity. Understanding the hydrodynamics of the lake is fundamental for creation and maintenance of a research and monitoring program for the early detection of and response to adverse environmental and biological change. In this work a 3D circulation model of the lake …

Towards A Decision Support System For Flood Management In A River Basin, Luis Vieira, Jose Pinho, Dirk Schwanenberg Aug 2014

Towards A Decision Support System For Flood Management In A River Basin, Luis Vieira, Jose Pinho, Dirk Schwanenberg

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

The world is experiencing a countless number of impressive and devastating floods causing a range of health impacts and risks with hundreds of thousands of people losing their lives or becoming homeless in a matter of hours. EU Floods Directive requires the developing of flood hazard maps, which may include information on hydrological and hydrodynamics characteristics of vulnerable regions, i.e. inundated areas and river flow discharges. Prediction of flood events can accurately be achieved by applying mathematical modelling for describing rainfall-runoff phenomena as well as surface waters hydrodynamics. Moreover, reservoirs can be properly operated in order to minimize flood events …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

A few years ago Deltares started a large multidisciplinary project named Next Generation Hydro Software. The main focus of the project is to improve, harmonize and integrate existing hydro software that has been developed throughout the years. Important technological innovations include development of the new computational core D-Flow Flexible Mesh, as well as the user-friendly, open modelling environment Delta Shell. The project involves more than 40 scientists and software engineers. The new integrated system will allow both water managers and modellers to do their work better and faster. The unique characteristic of the project is that it focuses on the …
