Effects Of Graphene On Electrochemical Behaviors Of Ni(Oh)2 As Supercapacitor Material, Zhen-Zhen Zhao, Wen-Bin Ni, Neng-Yue Gao, Hong-Bo Wang, Jian-Wei Zhao

Journal of Electrochemistry

The enhanced electrochemical properties of Ni(OH)2 by the oxidation defected graphene were studied by both experimental method and theoretical calculation. The composite material of nano-Ni(OH)2/graphene was prepared by potentiostatic deposition on the graphene substrate. Observed by TEM, the Ni(OH)2 nanoparticles were well dispersed on the graphene substrate with the diameter of 5.0±0.5 nm. The capacitance of the system measured by the electrochemical test was 1928 F?g-1. As indicated by the theoretical calculations, the composite material becomes conductive since Ni(OH)2 is combined with surface functional groups of the graphene through the strong chemical interaction. The electrons transfer from the graphene substrate …

Transport And Optical Properties Of Quantized Low-Dimensional Systems, Xiaoguang Li Aug 2011

Transport And Optical Properties Of Quantized Low-Dimensional Systems, Xiaoguang Li

Doctoral Dissertations

In this thesis, we present a systematic investigation of the static and dynamic response properties of low-dimensional systems, using a variety of theoretical techniques ranging from time dependent density functional theory to the recursive Green's function method.

As typical low-dimensional systems, metal nanostructures can strongly interact with an electric field to support surface plasmons, making their optical properties extremely attractive in both fundamental and applied aspects. We have investigated the energy broadening of surface plasmons in metal structures of reduced dimensionality, where Landau damping is the dominant dissipation channel and presents an intrinsic limitation to plasmonics technology. We show that …

Effects Of Surface States, Defects And Dopants On The Optical And Magnetic Properties Of Low-Dimensional Materials, Ramakrishna Podila Aug 2011

Effects Of Surface States, Defects And Dopants On The Optical And Magnetic Properties Of Low-Dimensional Materials, Ramakrishna Podila

All Dissertations

Nanomaterials have attracted the attention of researchers from various fields due to their unique features (that are otherwise absent in the bulk) such as quantum confinement, high surface to volume ratio, ability for surface modification etc. Since the discovery of fullerenes and carbon nanotubes, several synthesis techniques have been developed for nanomaterial growth. However, different control parameters in different synthesis techniques often result in nanostructures with varying defects that may alter their fundamental behavior. Such defects or disorder in the crystal lattice can lead to the disruption of lattice symmetry. The defect-induced symmetry lowering (or breaking) effects play a vital …

Detection Of Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia Pml/Rarî± Fusion Gene Using Graphene Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode, Zhi-Xian Lian, Guang-Xian Zhong, Kun Wang, Ai-Lin Liu, Xin-Hua Lin, Yuan-Zhong Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

A graphene modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was prepared by electrochemical reduction of graphite oxide fixed on the surface of GCE. Then, the amino-group modified probe of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) PML/RARα fusion gene fragment was immobilized onto surface of the graphene modified GCE by coupling activating agent. With methylene blue (MB) as a novel electrochemical indicator, artificial APL PML/RARα fusion gene fragment was measured by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The result indicated graphene nanomaterial showed good sensitization on the signal of MB. The relationship between the reduction peak current of MB and the concentration of complementary strand was linear …

Molecular Beam Epitaxy Approach To The Graphitization Of Gaas(100) Surfaces, Paul J. Simmonds, John Simon, Jerry M. Woodall, Minjoo Larry Lee May 2011

Molecular Beam Epitaxy Approach To The Graphitization Of Gaas(100) Surfaces, Paul J. Simmonds, John Simon, Jerry M. Woodall, Minjoo Larry Lee

Paul J. Simmonds

The authors present a method for obtaining graphitized carbon on GaAs(100) surfaces. Carbon-doped GaAs is grown by molecular beam epitaxy before controlled thermal etching within the growth chamber. An AlAs layer beneath the carbon-doped GaAs acts as a thermal etch stop. As the GaAs is etched away, the carbondopant atoms remain on the surface due to their low vapor pressure. The total number of carbon atoms available is precisely controllable by the doping density and thickness of the carbon-doped GaAs layer. Characteristic phonon modes in Raman spectra from the thermally etchedsurfaces show that the residual surfacecarbon atoms form sp2 …

Graphene: Material That Will Change The Future, Jigar Desai, Darryl Reese Apr 2011

Graphene: Material That Will Change The Future, Jigar Desai, Darryl Reese

Festival of Communities: UG Symposium (Posters)

Graphene is the most recent material discovered by scientists and is a star on the horizon of materials science and condensed matter physics. The one atom thick, two dimensional materials is an amazing conductor of electricity. Although graphene was not discovered completely until 2004, it has already revealed potential applications and scientists have begun researching ways of developing graphene products for the market. Only two products have been successfully produced so far, but scientists have encountered amazing results. This material has many potential applications in the real world and is about to change the future in a positive way.

We report on the formation of graphitized carbon on GaAs(100) surfaces by molecular beam epitaxy. We grew highly carbon-doped GaAs on AlAs, which was then thermally etched in situ leaving behind carbon atoms on the surface. After thermal etching, Raman spectra revealed characteristic phonon modes for sp2-bonded carbon, consistent with the formation of graphitic crystallites. We estimate that the graphitic crystallites are 1.5–3 nm in size and demonstrate that crystallite domain size can be increased through the use of higher etch temperatures.

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We report on molecular beam epitaxy growth of stoichiometric and superconducting FeSe crystalline thin films on double-layer graphene. Layer-by-layer growth of high-quality films has been achieved in a well-controlled manner by using Se-rich condition, which allow us to investigate the thickness-dependent superconductivity of FeSe. In situ low-temperature scanning tunneling spectra reveal that the local superconducting gap in the quasiparticle density of states is visible down to two triple layers for the minimum measurement temperature of 2.2 K, and that the transition temperature Tc scales inversely with film thickness.

Band Structures Of Layered Carbon/Boron Nitride Materials With Commensurate Lattices, Christopher C. Wells Jan 2011

Band Structures Of Layered Carbon/Boron Nitride Materials With Commensurate Lattices, Christopher C. Wells

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The electronic structures of systems consisting of hexagonal boron nitride layers and graphite sheets have been investigated in detail using density functional theory methods with two exchange correlation functions (local density approximation and generalized gradient approximation). The experimental data of graphene, graphite, monolayer hexagonal BN, and hexagonal BN were reproduced well with computational models. The commensurate models used in the investigation were generated by taking the averages of the lattice constants for graphite and h-BN.

In this thesis, single and multi-layered graphene films were epitaxially grown on either Si-face or C-face of SiC single crystal substrates. The film growth conditions, such as decomposition temperatures and pressures, and their surface morphologies were optimized. These films were then characterized by using surface analysis tools including SEM, TEM, AFM evanescent wave microscopy and electron educed spectroscopy. In addition to studying graphene decomposed from SiC crystals, carbon nanotube material was fabricated using a floating catalyst technique. These carbon nanotube material was then studied for potential cathode applications in this thesis. Field emission properties of these cathodes was measured and …
