Retrieval Of Intrinsic Mesospheric Gravity Wave Parameters Using Lidar And Airglow Temperature And Meteor Radar Wind Data, Robert Reichert, Bernd Kaifler, Natalie Kaifler, Markus Rapp, Pierre-Dominique Pautet, Michael J. Taylor, Alexander Kozlovsky, Mark Lester, Rigel Kivi

Publications

We analyse gravity waves in the upper-mesosphere, lower-thermosphere region from high-resolution temperature variations measured by the Rayleigh lidar and OH temperature mapper. From this combination of instruments, aided by meteor radar wind data, the full set of ground-relative and intrinsic gravity wave parameters are derived by means of the novel WAPITI (Wavelet Analysis and Phase line IdenTIfication) method. This WAPITI tool decomposes the gravity wave field into its spectral component while preserving the temporal resolution, allowing us to identify and study the evolution of gravity wave packets in the varying backgrounds. We describe WAPITI and demonstrate its capabilities for the …

Implementing The Use Of Personal Activity Data In An Introductory Statistics Course, Lacy Christensen Aug 2018

Implementing The Use Of Personal Activity Data In An Introductory Statistics Course, Lacy Christensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Integrating real data into a classroom is one of the recommendations in the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) college report which lays out guidelines for an introductory statistics course (Committee, GAISE College Report ASA Revision, 2016). In order to assess the effect of using real data in a classroom, the students received physical activity trackers to wear during an undergraduate introductory statistics course taught in the summer. This tracker, a Fitbit, enabled students to monitor and record their steps, calories, and active time throughout the class. Collecting personal activity data (PAD) creates a large database which …

Windowed Pq-Grams For Approximate Joins Of Data-Centric Xml, Nikolaus Augsten, Michael H. Böhlen, Curtis Dyreson, Johann Gamper Jan 2012

Windowed Pq-Grams For Approximate Joins Of Data-Centric Xml, Nikolaus Augsten, Michael H. Böhlen, Curtis Dyreson, Johann Gamper

Curtis Dyreson

In data integration applications, a join matches elements that are common to two data sources. Since elements are represented slightly different in each source, an approximate join must be used to do the matching. For XML data, most existing approximate join strategies are based on some ordered tree matching technique, such as the tree edit distance. In data-centric XML, however, the sibling order is irrelevant, and two elements should match even if their subelement order varies. Thus, approximate joins for data-centric XML must leverage unordered tree matching techniques. This is computationally hard since the algorithms cannot rely on a predefined …

Theory Of Planned Behavior Model Fit Using Atod Prevention Program Data, Ying Jin Jul 2009

Theory Of Planned Behavior Model Fit Using Atod Prevention Program Data, Ying Jin

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This report is to test the Theory of Planned Behavior (TpB) model fit using the data collected from the ATOD Prevention Program conducted by the Operation Snowball Program from year 2004 to 2007 in Naperville, Illinois. Measurement Model and Structural Equation Modeling are used as principal modeling methods to test internal consistency of assigned measures for each construct and the dependency between constructs respectively. The results show that the ATOD Prevention Program data does not fit the TpB model perfectly. Extra paths should be added to the original theoretical model in order to obtain a satisfactory model fit.

Optimal Candidate Generation In Spatial Co-Location Mining, Zhongshan Lin May 2009

Optimal Candidate Generation In Spatial Co-Location Mining, Zhongshan Lin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Existing spatial co-location algorithms based on levels suffer from generating extra, nonclique candidate instances. Thus, they require cliqueness checking at every level. In this thesis, a novel, spatial co-location mining algorithm that automatically generates co-located spatial features without generating any nonclique candidates at any level is proposed. Subsequently, this algorithm generates fewer candidates than other existing level-wise, co-location algorithms without losing any pertinent information. The benefits of this algorithm have been clearly observed at early stages in the mining process.

Mixtures Of Truncated Normal Data Assimilation Models For Parameter Estimation And Prediction In Hydrological Systems, Darl D. Flake Ii May 2008

Mixtures Of Truncated Normal Data Assimilation Models For Parameter Estimation And Prediction In Hydrological Systems, Darl D. Flake Ii

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Physical models in the hydrological sciences are often calibrated using methods that do not formally quantify uncertainty in the model parameters. Additionally, many competing hydrological models exist and are used to model the same processes. Considering existing mechanistic models of rainfall-run off in a statistical context can assist hydrologists in understanding the true physical process taking place. This paper introduces a data assimilation mixture model of runoff that yields statistical estimates of hydrological mode l parameters and predictions. This statistical model incorporates two commonly used hydrological models, each with strengths and weaknesses. The mixture framework allows comparisons between models as …

Wavelet Analysis Of Magnetometer Data, Inga Maslova May 2005

Wavelet Analysis Of Magnetometer Data, Inga Maslova

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The wavelet analysis of the ground-based magnetograms' records is performed in this project. We explore the records from low, medium and high latitude stations during a calm period and a stormy one. Different methods for detecting and estimating the tail index of heavy-tailed distributions are compared. A detailed analysis of the properties of the distributions of the discrete wavelet transform coefficients of magnetometer data is presented. Conclusions on the tail index estimation techniques and the distribution of the discrete wavelet transform coefficients are made.

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Objective: To access the robustness of factor analyses when the data does not conform to standard parametric requirements.

Methods: Data were simulated in package R. Maximum likelihood was used to fit and assess the factor models. Chi-square statistics were obtained to test hypotheses about the correct number of factors in simulated settings where the true number of factors was known. The number of true factors varied between 1 and 3; the number of observed variables was either 6 (for 1 factor) or 3 per factor for 2 or more factors.

Results: With standard normal factor populations, and normal errors added …
