In modern organic chemistry, hypervalent (HV) iodine(III) compounds have been used widely as oxidizing agents but applications of λ3-iodanes in polymer and material chemistry is still underexplored. In the first project, a new series of heterocyclic HV iodine(III) compounds with I–Cl bonds and various substituents at the N atom were synthesized and successfully employed in the synthesis of highly branched polymers when added to mixtures of styrene and 1,4-divinylbenzene containing 10–80 mol% of the divinyl crosslinker, or even pure crosslinker. This thesis consists of three empirical essays that investigate issues in environmental and health economics. The main focus of this thesis is to study how environmental degradation or interventions in this domain can affect demographic and health outcomes of the population in developing countries. The first chapter explores the effect of an information campaign about arsenic contamination in Bangladesh on marriage market outcomes. This study finds that providing information about negative effects of arsenic consumption had an unintended consequence in the marriage market. The modification of inorganic nanoparticles with organic polymer chains has become a significant field of study for the engineering of advanced nanocomposite materials. This dissertation presents the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel polymer grafted silica nanoparticles as new strategies to combat bacterial resistance. Described herein is the synthesis of monomers that have been graft polymerized onto silica nanoparticles that can be used as a delivery drug vehicle for biomedical applications. In this thesis, electrochemical approaches are used to determine the properties of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) by electrostatic denaturation. The electrochemical routine involves an application of a destabilization potential, an equilibration potential, and a square wave voltammogram (SWV) to monitor the extent of melting. Our method uses a monolayer consisting of thiol modified DNA and mercaptohexanol on a gold electrode. These electrodes are then incubated in a complementary sequence tagged with methylene blue. By using our electrostatic denaturation technique, different parameters are explored, such as surface densities, surface coverages, and ionic strengths. I. Two different series of non–degradable polysiloxane networks were prepared for the encapsulation and controlled release of a small molecule agent. For the first series, hydrosilylation was utilized to prepare networks of varying crosslink densities, as determined from swelling studies, from vinyl terminated and silylhydride functional poly(dimethyl)siloxanes. For the second series, the thiol-ene reaction was utilized to prepare networks of varying crosslink densities, as determined from swelling studies, from vinyl terminated and mercaptopropyl functional poly(dimethyl)siloxanes. Fabric arts, and the practice of dyeing fabric using various resist techniques, is a tradition that goes back centuries, and is unique among art mediums in its relation to science, as the innovations in dye production have directly affected the art form. The development of synthetic dyes in the 1800’s greatly affected the way fabric is dyed, and subsequently the way clothes were made and consumed. Major Depressive disorder (MDD) plagues society and stands at the forefront of research as MDD affects approximately 16% of the population. Pharmaceutical drugs, including the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), have been used for MDD treatment and remain a popular option today. However, current antidepressant treatments have proven to be ineffective in just less than half of the patients. Research continues with the goal to better understand the mechanisms of the pathology of depression and to search for other treatment options. For example, the stress-neurogenesis hypothesis investigates the role of stress and decreased neuroplasticity within MDD.

The detection of drugs of abuse using Raman spectroscopy is of particular interest to forensic researchers at the moment. Raman spectroscopy is highly specific, fast, non-destructive, and can be adapted for in-situ measurements, making it the ideal forensic technique. Researchers working under the guidance of Doctor Igor Lednev have been able to use UV resonance Raman spectroscopy to detect cocaine in oral fluid without the need for sample pretreatment. They were however unable to detect the cocaine at forensically relevant levels. The computation of free energy is pivotal to understanding the fundamental nature of chemical phenomena. That is, whether a specific molecular outcome occurs spontaneously or is inherently unfavorable. The need to do this with consistent accuracy begs for the use of quantum mechanical (QM) methods. However, techniques for directly computing free energy differences with QM or mixed QM/MM methods are untenable, as the computational expense is quite exorbitant. Neuropeptides are a class of small peptides that govern various neurological functions, and the American lobster (Homarus americanus) provides a model system for their characterization. Neuropeptides are commonly post-translationally modified (PTM), and one common PTM is glycosylation. Past research in the Stemmler lab has found glycosylated neuropeptides in H. americanus; however, the extent and biological role of this modification has not been well characterized. A New England community college reported that 60% of General Chemistry college students, who were science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors, did not advance in the STEM curriculum. To potentially increase student persistence in STEM curriculum, this qualitative case study project explored the self-efficacy perceptions of General Chemistry students after participating in project-based service-learning with elementary-school students. Bandura's social cognitive theory provided the conceptual framework for the study, supporting an understanding of learner self-efficacy. Research questions focused on chemistry students perceived self-efficacy after interactions with elementary-school students, teamwork, and the development of a project. The project covers the synthesis of two bio-based polymers. One aspect of the research investigates the synthesis of materials for use in vegetable oil-based UV-curable coating, and the subsequent polymerization of the materials into a coating film. The second aspect of the research follows the synthesis of a functionalized cellulose material for use as a reinforcer in a vegetable oil-based composite. The dissociative photoionization reactions of two small, oxygenated organics, namely 1,3-dioxolane and methyl vinyl ketone, were studied by photoelectron photoion coincidence (PEPICO) spectroscopy. Experiments involving 1,3-dioxolane were carried out in the photon energy range of 9.5‒13.5 eV. The statistical thermodynamics model shows that a total of six dissociation channels are involved in the formation of three fragment ions, namely C3H5O2+ (m/z 73), C2H5O+ (m/z 45) and C2H4O+ (m/z 44), with two channels contributing to the formation of each. By comparing the results of ab initio quantum chemical calculations to the experimentally derived appearance energies of the fragment ions, the most …

Gunshot residue (GSR) is a type of trace evidence that can often be recovered at violent crime scenes. There are two major types of GSR, organic gunshot residue (OGSR), and inorganic gunshot residue (IGSR). Traditional forensic analysis of GSR focuses on IGSR, although with the movement towards lead-free, or non-toxic ammunition, IGSR analysis has become less informative, as lead is a major component of IGSR analysis. Oncogenic K-Ras is a driver protein found in specific cancers and was once thought to be “undruggable.” However, recent advances have suggested that mislocalizing K-Ras from the plasma membrane could be a viable strategy to target these cancers. The objective of this project was to identify a lead compound and determine a structure-activity relationship from chalcones bearing the 3,4,5-trimethoxy motif towards oncogenic K-Ras and MAO-B. This was accomplished by keeping the trimethoxy group consistent on one ring while varying the electron-donating or -withdrawing groups on the opposite ring. Separately, N-Heterocyclic carbene and Tetrathiafulvalene compounds show great promise for a variety of applications. N-heterocyclic carbenes exhibit desirable metal bonding characteristics which allow for modulation of the metal center via back-bonding interactions. Additionally, this creates a system of increased bonding strength creating stable complexes. Tetrathiafulvalene exhibits strong redox-active and optical characteristics. The synthesis of poly(arylene ether)s, with a pendent aryl iodide, was achieved via nucleophilic aromatic substitution (NAS) polycondensation of DI-DFDPS monomer. The platform diiodo-difluorodiphenyl sulfone monomer, DFDPS-DI (3), was prepared in one-step, via EAS chemistry. Structural characterization was provided by NMR spectroscopy, GC/MS, and elemental analysis. As “pre” approach didn’t work here, so “post” approach was used to synthesize N-heterocycle functionalized copolymers. Acid dissociation constants, often expressed as pKa values, afford vital information with regards to molecular behavior in various environments and are of significance in fields of organic, inorganic, and medicinal chemistry. Several quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs) were developed that correlate experimental pKas for a given class of compounds with a descriptor(s) calculated using density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-31+G** level utilizing the CPCM solvent model. A novel organic TADF chromophore was synthesized via a 3-step process to emit a blue fluorescent light upon excitation. The chromophore was covalently attached to a 61% isobutyryl amidated poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI-IBAm0.61) non-viral gene vector utilized in gene transfection experiments. The gene vectors are loaded with a green fluorescent protein (GFP) and are monitored via fluorescence microscopy. The addition of the blue chromophore therefore allows for the monitoring of the movements of the PEI-IBAm0.61 through the full delivery mechanism of the GFP inside the cells. In order to develop a better understanding heterogeneous nucleation of barite, barite precipitation was studied under varying experimental parameters. Hydrothermal atomic force microscopy (HAFM) and optical microscopy were used to investigate the effect of change in temperature, supersaturation and varying ratios of ions on heterogeneous nucleation of barite. In the experiments conducted at higher temperatures, the particles thus nucleated were found to display characteristic hexagonal and rhomboidal shapes. In comparing results of particle densities among different ion ratios, there is evidence suggesting that barium to sulfate ratio plays a role of promoter. Illicitly manufactured fentanyls (IMFs) have become a global and local epidemic and have recently caused an increase in the number of accidental exposures and overdoses in first responders and the community. The aim of the research is to explore a method to discriminate between IMFs and cutting agents in mock street samples using Raman Spectroscopy. Predominant Raman bands corresponding to the structural moieties of each individual illicit, licit drugs, and cutting agents were tracked, then used to discriminate between varying components in a mock street sample.
