The persistence of coral reef communities is threatened by a suite of pressures operating at varying spatial and temporal scales. In general, acute disturbances (short term stochastic events such as marine heatwaves or hurricanes) and chronic pressures, such as ocean warming, have caused the most significant changes to stony coral assemblages (order Scleractinia) and continue to impair recovery potential. Additionally, many coral reefs are subject to local chronic anthropogenic pressures resulting in poor water quality or sedimentation, which further impact stony corals and shape benthic community structure, particularly near urbanized coastlines. Numerical Analysis Of A Model For The Growth Of Microorganisms, Alexander Craig Montgomery, Braden J. Carlson

A system of first-order differential equations that arises in a model for the growth of microorganisms in a chemostat with Monod kinetics is studied. A new, semi-implicit numerical scheme is proposed to approximate solutions to the system. It is shown that the scheme is uniquely solvable and unconditionally stable, and further properties of the scheme are analyzed. The convergence rate of the numerical solution to the true solution of the system is given, and it is shown convergence of the numerical solutions to the true solutions is uniform over any interval [0, T ] for T > 0.

Let $A$ be an associative algebra endowed with an automorphism or an antiautomorphism $\varphi$ of order $\leq 2.$ One associates to $A,$ in a natural way, a numerical sequence $c^\varphi_n(A),$ $n=1, 2, \ldots$, called the sequence of $\varphi$-codimensions of $A$ which is the main tool for the quantitative investigation of the polynomial identities satisfied by $A$. In \cite{GLM} it was proved that such a sequence is eventually nondecreasing in case $\varphi$ is an antiautomorphism. Here we prove that it still holds in case $\varphi$ is an automorphism and present some recent results about the asymptotics of $c^\varphi_n(A)$.

The effects of noise and nonuniformity on dynamics of populations are relevant and timely subjects of investigation. One form of variation is the time dependence of the reproduction rate (fitness), referred to as ?seascape? noise; another is time-independent intrinsic dependencies of fitness on location (in the parlance of statistical physics, corresponding to annealed and quenched disorder, respectively). The former was studied recently and demonstrated to lead to novel universality classes for extinction and growth. Competing pressures imposed by climate-related warming and offshore development have created a need for quantitative approaches that anticipate fisheries responses to these challenges. This study used a spatially explicit, ecological-economic agent-based model integrating dynamics associated with Atlantic surfclam stock biology, decision-making behavior of fishing vessel captains, and fishing fleet behavior to simulate stock biomass, and fishing vessel catch, effort and landings. Simulations were implemented using contemporary Atlantic surfclam stock distributions and characteristics of the surfclam fishing fleet. The Upper Mississippi River (UMR) supports ecologically and economically important commercial and recreational fisheries. One recreational fishery in the UMR is the Largemouth Bass fishery. Recreational fisheries can be effectively managed using information on population dynamics, though little is known about Largemouth Bass population dynamics in large river ecosystems. Phytoplankton account for about a half of photosynthesis in the world, making them a key player in the ecological and biogeochemical systems. One of the key traits of phytoplankton is their growth rate because it indicates their productivity and affects their competitive capability. The saturating relationship between phytoplankton growth rate and environmental nutrient concentration has been widely observed yet the mechanisms behind the relationship remain elusive. Here we use a mechanistic model and metadata of phytoplankton to show that the saturating relationship between growth rate and nitrate concentration can be interpreted by intracellular macromolecular allocation.
