Salvia hispanica L., commonly known as chia, is a plant-based alternative to seafood and is rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acid, protein, fiber, and antioxidants. In the Northern Hemisphere, chia flowering is triggered by the fall equinox (12-h light and dark, early October) and the seeds mature after approximately three months. Chia is sensitive to frost and end of season moisture which limits its cultivation to small areas in regions with temperate climate. The U.S. chia import has increased considerably over the years; however, chia is not widely cultivated in the United States. This study used the historical U.S. temperature …

Aim To evaluate whether dietary pattern changes, antioxidant supplementation or 5-10% weight loss could improve disease activity (skin and joint) in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Methods A total of 97 PsA patients were enrolled in this 12-week randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial. Patients were randomized into three groups: Diet-placebo (hypocaloric diet + placebo supplementation); Diet-fish (hypocaloric diet + 3 g/day of omega-3 supplementation; and Placebo. Food intake (3-day registry, Healthy Eating Index (HEI), and the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII)), body composition (whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), weight and waist circumference) and disease activity (PASI, BSA, BASDAI, DAS28-ESR, DAS28-CRP and MDA) …

Thiol Antioxidants Protect Human Lens Epithelial (Hle B-3) Cells Against Tert-Butyl Hydroperoxide-Induced Oxidative Damage And Cytotoxicity, Annalise Pfaff, Anna Chernatynskaya, Hannah Vineyard, Nuran Ercal Mar 2022

Thiol Antioxidants Protect Human Lens Epithelial (Hle B-3) Cells Against Tert-Butyl Hydroperoxide-Induced Oxidative Damage And Cytotoxicity, Annalise Pfaff, Anna Chernatynskaya, Hannah Vineyard, Nuran Ercal

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Oxidative damage to lens epithelial cells plays an important role in the development of age-related cataract, and the health of the lens has important implications for overall ocular health. As a result, there is a need for effective therapeutic agents that prevent oxidative damage to the lens. Thiol antioxidants such as tiopronin or N-(2-mercaptopropionyl)glycine (MPG), N-acetylcysteine amide (NACA), N-acetylcysteine (NAC), and exogenous glutathione (GSH) may be promising candidates for this purpose, but their ability to protect lens epithelial cells is not well understood. The effectiveness of these compounds was compared by exposing human lens epithelial cells (HLE B-3) to the …

Molecular Characterization Of Wild Pleurotus Ostreatus (Mw457626) And Evaluation Of Β-Glucans Polysaccharide Activities, Ghazwan Q. Hasan Ph.D., Shimal Y. Abdulhadi Ph.D. Feb 2022

Molecular Characterization Of Wild Pleurotus Ostreatus (Mw457626) And Evaluation Of Β-Glucans Polysaccharide Activities, Ghazwan Q. Hasan Ph.D., Shimal Y. Abdulhadi Ph.D.

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Pleurotus ostreatus is a common cultivated edible mushroom worldwide. The fruiting bodies of P. ostreatus is a rich source of a β-glucans polysaccharide. The current study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of β-glucans as a natural polysaccharide produced by P. ostreatus as an antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer. The molecular identification of P. ostreatus isolate was confirmed by Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) sequence. The sequence alignment and phylogenetic evolutionary relationship of studied ITS sequence were performed against some deposited sequences in GenBank. The analysis of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) as well as the result of fourier transform infrared spectroscopy …

Imidazole Derivative Improves Antioxidant Status And Causes Differential Alteration Of Redox-Status In Drosophila Melanogaster, Elizabeth Temidayo Oluwayemi, Oluwakemi Josephine Awakan, Abiodun Omokehinde Eseola, Winfried Plass, Oluyomi Stephen Adeyemi Jan 2022

Imidazole Derivative Improves Antioxidant Status And Causes Differential Alteration Of Redox-Status In Drosophila Melanogaster, Elizabeth Temidayo Oluwayemi, Oluwakemi Josephine Awakan, Abiodun Omokehinde Eseola, Winfried Plass, Oluyomi Stephen Adeyemi

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

This study investigated the toxicity of a new imidazole compound, 1-(1,4,5-triphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)-naphthalen-2-ol, through the evaluation of selected oxidative stress markers and antioxidants. Both male and female D. melanogaster (3–5 days old) were fed a diet containing the imidazole derivative (20, 50, and 100 mg IMZ/kg diet) for five days. After cessation of imidazole treatment, half the population of the imidazole-exposed flies was homogenized for biochemical assays, while the other half of the flies was allowed to have a normal diet for an additional five days to see if any induced effect would be resolved. Imidazole derivatives did not significantly …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

In this study, a water-soluble metal-free phthalocyanine (SPC) containing sodium 2-mercaptoethanesulfonate substituents at the peripheral positions was used to investigate the algaecidal properties and oxidative effects on the growth of two microalgal species, Arthrospira platensis and Chlorella vulgaris. Although OD at 560 nm and chlorophyll-a content were decreased in Arthrospira platensis during 7 days depending on dose and time, increases in both OD at 750 and chlorophyll-a content at 8 ppb (parts per billion) concentration on the 7th day were observed in Chlorella vulgaris. However, total SOD (superoxide dismutase) and GR (glutathione reductase) enzyme activity of A. platensis cultures did …

Biological Potential Of Copper Complexes: A Review, Jamshaid Ashraf, Muhammad Asad Riaz Jan 2022

Biological Potential Of Copper Complexes: A Review, Jamshaid Ashraf, Muhammad Asad Riaz

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

This review comprises the inorganic compounds particularly metal coordinated complexes, as drugs play a relevant role in medicinal chemistry. It has been observed that copper complexes are potentially attractive as medicinal importance. In this review, the most remarkable achievements of copper complexes undertaken over the past few decades as antimicrobial, antioxidant, enzyme inhibition activity, and anti-cancer agents are discussed. This work was motivated by the observation that no comprehensive surveys of the diversity of biological activities of copper complexes were available in the literature.
