Chasing Transients: Constructing Local Galaxy Catalogs For Electromagnetic Follow-Up Of Gravitational Wave Events, Chaoran Zhang Dec 2022

Chasing Transients: Constructing Local Galaxy Catalogs For Electromagnetic Follow-Up Of Gravitational Wave Events, Chaoran Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

Gravitational waves (GWs) provide a new window for observing the universe which is not possible using traditional electromagnetic (EM) wave astronomy. The coalescence of compact object binaries, such as black holes (BHs) and neutron stars (NSs) generates “loud" GW signals that are detectable by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) GW Observa- tory. If the binary contains at least one NS, there is a possibility that an observable EM counterpart will be launched during and/or after the merger. The first joint detection of GW radiation (GW170817) and its EM counterpart (AT 2017gfo) greatly extended our understanding of the universe in many fields, such …

Using Anisotropy Of Magnetic Susceptibility (Ams) To Identify A Tectonic Lineation In The Pulo Do Lobo Formation In The Southern Iberian Shear Zone Near Aracena, Spain, Devin Levang Dec 2022

Using Anisotropy Of Magnetic Susceptibility (Ams) To Identify A Tectonic Lineation In The Pulo Do Lobo Formation In The Southern Iberian Shear Zone Near Aracena, Spain, Devin Levang

Theses and Dissertations

The Southern Iberian Shear Zone (SISZ) is a Variscan-aged suture representing the closure of a small ocean basin during the Carboniferous. The SISZ is bounded on either side by the well-studied, relatively homogeneous Beja-Acebuches Metabasites (BAM) and the complex and heterogeneous accretionary metasedimentary rocks of the Pulo do Lobo (PdL). The SISZ underwent a combination of shortening and lateral shearing known as transpression. Despite a very well-developed tectonic foliation, kinematic interpretation in the PdL is made difficult by a lack of easily identifiable lineations. Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS), a geophysical technique measuring the relative anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility axes …

Common Ground Over Common Water: Defining The Public Interest In The Milwaukee Watershed, Thomas Anthony Gentine Dec 2022

Common Ground Over Common Water: Defining The Public Interest In The Milwaukee Watershed, Thomas Anthony Gentine

Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation examines government and nongovernment entities’ attempts to restore and protect the use and health of the Milwaukee River and its watershed from 1960 to 2000. Under Mayor Henry Maier’s leadership, Milwaukee worked to reclaim the urban riverway to stimulate economic growth. However, state and federal representatives, after the passage of the 1965 Water Quality Act, demanded that the city government prioritize updating the combined storm and sewer system to lessen pollution in the Milwaukee River. At the same time, other groups worked to save rural areas from unplanned development and further degradation of the waterway. Influential groups included …

An Ethercat Based Real-Time Control System Design For Wheelchair-Mounted 6dof Assistive Robotic Arm, Ivan Alexander Rulik Cote

Theses and Dissertations

Numerous assistive robots for individuals with disabilities have been produced over the past ten years, but researchers have not completely exploited these robotic technologies to enable people with impairments to live independently, especially in respect to activities of daily living. (ADLs). For people with impairments, an assistive system can help them fulfill the requirements of typical ADLs. Assistive robots can help address future healthcare demands due to a growing need for caregivers, a scarcity of them, and an increase in the number of the elderly and people with disabilities. Enhancing functional independence while creating a superior human-machine interaction is one …

Unraveling Deformation Mechanisms And Kinematics In Metasedimentary Rocks Along The Southern Iberian Shear Zone, Kayla P. Kopinski Dec 2022

Unraveling Deformation Mechanisms And Kinematics In Metasedimentary Rocks Along The Southern Iberian Shear Zone, Kayla P. Kopinski

Theses and Dissertations

The primary goal of this project is to document deformation mechanisms in quartz-rich rocks across a 100 m wide ductile shear zone to evaluate whether strain localization at the brittle-ductile transition is accompanied by variations in active or dominant deformation mechanisms. A secondary goal of this project is to evaluate whether the kinematic framework varies across a shear zone with a major rheological boundary. The Southern Iberian Shear Zone (SISZ), a major terrane bounding shear zone within the Iberian Massif, is an ideal location to study these questions because it is a regional scale shear zone currently exposed at the …

Automated Feature Extraction From Large Cardiac Electrophysiological Data Sets, And A Population Dynamics Approach To The Distribution Of Space Debris In Low-Earth Orbit, John Jurkiewicz

Theses and Dissertations

We present two applications of mathematics to relevant real-world situations.

In the first chapter, we discuss an automated method for the extraction of useful data from large file-size readings of cardiac data. We begin by describing the history of electrophysiology and the background of the work's setting, wherein a new multi-electrode array-based application for the long-term recording of action potentials from electrogenic cells makes large-scale readings of relevant data possible, opening the way for exciting cardiac electrophysiology studies in health and disease. With hundreds of simultaneous electrode recordings being acquired over a period of days, the main challenge becomes achieving …

Strain Development And Partitioning Across A Transpressional Shear Zone Along A Quartzite- Metagabbro Contact In The Black Hills Uplift, South Dakota, Eric L. Schuemann

Theses and Dissertations

The Nemo region of South Dakota’s Black Hills offers an ideal location to study transpressional shear zones because it hosts an exposed Archean lithological boundary between two contrasting rheological units, the Boxelder Creek Quartzite (BCQ), a rift-depositional quartzite, and the Blue Draw Metagabbro (BDM), a metagabbro sill, deformed within a ductile shear zone that represents the beginning of main-phase formation of the North American continent as we know it today. The tectonic setting of the Black Hills is at the eastern edge of the Archean Wyoming province, located near the Trans-Hudson Orogeny suture zone that formed between the Wyoming and …

A Protocol To Build Trust With Black Box Models, Timothy K. Thielke Dec 2022

A Protocol To Build Trust With Black Box Models, Timothy K. Thielke

Theses and Dissertations

Data scientists are more widely using artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML) algorithms today despite the general mistrust associated with them due to the lack of contextual understanding of the domain occurring within the algorithm. Of the many types of ML algorithms, those that use non-linear activation functions are especially regarded with suspicion because of the lack of transparency and intuitive understanding of what is occurring within the black box of the algorithm. In this thesis, we set out to create a protocol to delve into the black box of an ML algorithm set to predict synoptic severe weather patterns …

Image-Based Cancer Diagnosis Using Novel Deep Neural Networks, Hosein Barzekar Dec 2022

Image-Based Cancer Diagnosis Using Novel Deep Neural Networks, Hosein Barzekar

Theses and Dissertations

Cancer is the major cause of death in many nations. This serious illness can only be effectivelytreated if it is diagnosed early. In contrast, biomedical imaging presents challenges to both clinical institutions and researchers. Physiological anomalies are often characterized by modest modifications in individual cells or tissues, making them difficult to detect visually. Physiological anomalies are often characterized by slight abnormalities in individual cells or tissues, making them difficult to detect visually. Traditionally, anomalies are diagnosed by radiologists and pathologists with extensive training. This procedure, however, demands the participation of professionals and incurs a substantial expense, making the classification of …

Use Of Machine Learning And Natural Language Processing To Enhance Traffic Safety Analysis, Md Abu Sayed Dec 2022

Use Of Machine Learning And Natural Language Processing To Enhance Traffic Safety Analysis, Md Abu Sayed

Theses and Dissertations

Despite significant advances in vehicle technologies, safety data collection and analysis, and engineering advancements, tens of thousands of Americans die every year in motor vehicle crashes. Alarmingly, the trend of fatal and serious injury crashes appears to be heading in the wrong direction. In 2021, the actual rate of fatalities exceeded the predicted rate. This worrisome trend prompts and necessitates the development of advanced and holistic approaches to determining the causes of a crash (particularly fatal and major injuries). These approaches range from analyzing problems from multiple perspectives, utilizing available data sources, and employing the most suitable tools and technologies …

Photo-Reactivity Of Bifunctional Naphthalene Compounds Toward Dna, Qi Zhang Dec 2022

Photo-Reactivity Of Bifunctional Naphthalene Compounds Toward Dna, Qi Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

DNA interstrand cross-link (ICL) can covalently bind two DNA strands, preventing DNA strands separation, and therefore, blocking DNA transcription and replication, which are essential biological processes for cell division. Among different methods to induce DNA interstrand cross-linking, photoinduction is an important way to activate the cross-linking reactions due to its many characteristics, such as non-invasive, controllability, selectivity and biorthogonality. My research mainly focuses on developing novel binaphthalene compounds which can be activated by 350 nm UV light to produce DNA interstrand cross-linking via alkylation. We designed and synthesized a series of binaphthalene analogues with different substituents at the position-4’ on …

Semantics Of Rxjs, Tian Zhao, Yonglun Li Nov 2022

Semantics Of Rxjs, Tian Zhao, Yonglun Li

Computer Science Faculty Articles

RxJS is a popular JavaScript library for reactive programming in Web applications. It provides numerous operators to create, combine, transform, and filter discrete events and to handle errors. These operators may be stateful and have side effects, which makes it difficult to understand the precise meaning of the resulting computation. In this paper, we define a formal model for RxJS programs by formalizing a selected subset of RxJS operators using a small-step operational semantics. We present several debugging related applications using the semantics as a model. We also implemented a subset of RxJS based on this semantics, which provides convenient …

Stable Matchings With Restricted Preferences: Structure And Complexity, Christine T. Cheng, Will Rosenbaum Sep 2022

Stable Matchings With Restricted Preferences: Structure And Complexity, Christine T. Cheng, Will Rosenbaum

Computer Science Faculty Articles

In the stable marriage (SM) problem, there are two sets of agents–traditionally referred to as men and women–and each agent has a preference list that ranks (a subset of) agents of the opposite sex. The goal is to find a matching between men and women that is stable in the sense that no man-woman pair mutually prefer each other to their assigned partners. In a seminal work, Gale and Shapley showed that stable matchings always exist, and described an efficient algorithm for finding one.

Irving and Leather defined the rotation poset of an SM instance and showed that it determines …

On Equivalence Of Anomaly Detection Algorithms, Carlos Ivan Jerez, Jun Zhang, Marcia R. Silva Aug 2022

On Equivalence Of Anomaly Detection Algorithms, Carlos Ivan Jerez, Jun Zhang, Marcia R. Silva

Computer Science Faculty Articles

In most domains anomaly detection is typically cast as an unsupervised learning problem because of the infeasability of labelling large datasets. In this setup, the evaluation and comparison of different anomaly detection algorithms is difficult. Although some work has been published in this field, they fail to account that different algorithms can detect different kinds of anomalies. More precisely, the literature on this topic has focused on defining criteria to determine which algorithm is better, while ignoring the fact that such criteria are meaningful only if the algorithms being compared are detecting the same kind of anomalies. Therefore, in this …

Enhancement Of Energy Efficiency For Thermal Energy And Biomass Driven Applications, Osama Mansour Selim Elsayed Aug 2022

Enhancement Of Energy Efficiency For Thermal Energy And Biomass Driven Applications, Osama Mansour Selim Elsayed

Theses and Dissertations

The importance of gas turbine blades is to convert the thermal energy into shaft work output, which makes the turbine blades are one of the critical components of the gas turbines. Besides the mechanical stresses caused by the centrifugal force and the fluid forces, the thermal stresses arise because of the temperature gradient within the blade materials. This paper aims to have a uniform circumferential temperature field at the combustor exit, consequently reducing the thermal stresses caused by the non-uniform temperature distribution along the turbine blade. The validation of the simulation results with the experiments showed an acceptable agreement with …

Pipeline For Calculating Calories For Print Recipes With Minimal User Intervention, Karl W. Holten

Theses and Dissertations

The thesis will provide a pipeline to estimate calorie counts from print recipes. The pipeline takes scanned recipes from cookbooks and uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to convert the scanned images of recipes to text. Several OCR tools were tested for their accuracy on fractions using a sample of the data, and the most accurate tool is used on the data. Next, a specially trained named entity recognition model is used to identify ingredients, quantities and units. These ingredients are used to search a database of values from the FDA to compute a calorie count for the recipe. The thesis …

The Earth Mover's Distance Through The Lens Of Algebraic Combinatorics, William Quentin Erickson Aug 2022

The Earth Mover's Distance Through The Lens Of Algebraic Combinatorics, William Quentin Erickson

Theses and Dissertations

The earth mover's distance (EMD) is a metric for comparing two histograms, with burgeoning applications in image retrieval, computer vision, optimal transport, physics, cosmology, political science, epidemiology, and many other fields. In this thesis, however, we approach the EMD from three distinct viewpoints in algebraic combinatorics. First, by regarding the EMD as the symmetric difference of two Young diagrams, we use combinatorial arguments to answer statistical questions about histogram pairs. Second, we adopt as a natural model for the EMD a certain infinite-dimensional module, known as the first Wallach representation of the Lie algebra su(p,q), which arises in the Howe …

A detailed study of the stratigraphic units in and around the Wisconsin Arch of central and southeast Wisconsin are presented to refine the sedimentologic record and the geologic implications within the Cambrian and early Ordovician strata. The Cambrian and early Ordovician sediments in central and southeast Wisconsin unconformably overlie a topographic high composed of Precambrian basement rocks, called the Wisconsin Arch, and consist of various clastic deposits, dolostones, and several horizons of deformation. Bedrock cores, made available through the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (WGNHS), were analyzed, to understand sedimentation in the Cambrian and early Ordovician. My analyses focused …

Searching For Gravitational Wave Associations With High-Energy Astrophysical Transients, Brandon Joseph Piotrzkowski Aug 2022

Searching For Gravitational Wave Associations With High-Energy Astrophysical Transients, Brandon Joseph Piotrzkowski

Theses and Dissertations

Gravitational waves (GW) have become an invaluable tool in modern astronomy, especiallyin conjunction with other astronomical observations. GWs are created in highly dynamical systems such as compact binary coalescences (CBC) which are comprised of black holes and/or neutron stars. The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO), Virgo Observatory, and KAGRA have now collectively identified almost a hundred of these events. GWs have also been predicted to come from core collapse supernovae. Both of these types of systems have been shown to produce other detectable transients, such as gamma- ray bursts (GRB) and neutrino bursts. Observations of the same astrophysical system …

Swimming Ability Of The Enigmatic Carboniferous Fish: Tullimonstrum Gregarium, Jacob James Potter Aug 2022

Swimming Ability Of The Enigmatic Carboniferous Fish: Tullimonstrum Gregarium, Jacob James Potter

Theses and Dissertations

Tullimonstrum gregarium, more commonly known as the Tully Monster, is one of the strangest creatures in the fossil record. While it was traditionally considered a problematic fossil, recent studies have firmly placed the Tully Monster with the vertebrates as a relative of lamprey and hagfish. This may offer insight into the Tully Monster’s ecology, but the Tully Monster’s Swimming ability remains uncertain due to its strange body plan. This study aims to investigate the hydrodynamics of these features to gain insight into the Tully Monster’s swimming ability using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). 3D and 2D simulations of the Tully Monster …

Development And Use Of An Agent-Based Model To Assess The Effect Of Forecast Credibility On Urban Traffic During Snow Events, Lillie Farrell Aug 2022

Development And Use Of An Agent-Based Model To Assess The Effect Of Forecast Credibility On Urban Traffic During Snow Events, Lillie Farrell

Theses and Dissertations

With the difficulties in snow accumulation prediction, the potential for false alarms and forecast misses arise. These forecast errors can lead to a lack of public trust and poor decisions in responding to future weather hazards. There has been little research on how individuals respond in the future to false alarms and forecast inconsistencies. We developed an agent-based traffic model to demonstrate how snow forecasts and public response interplay. This model factors receptiveness to expertise, forecast severity, and forecast credibility into the agents’ work-related travel decisions. Agents are grouped into three categories: firm workers, service workers, and household workers, where …

Inducible Dna Interstrand Cross-Linking Agents: Design, Synthesis, Mechanism, And Biomedical Applications, Muhammad Asad Uz Zaman Aug 2022

Inducible Dna Interstrand Cross-Linking Agents: Design, Synthesis, Mechanism, And Biomedical Applications, Muhammad Asad Uz Zaman

Theses and Dissertations

DNA is the carrier of genetic information, making its chemical reactivity and function extremelyimportant. DNA interstrand cross-links (ICL) leads to covalent bind of two strands, which prevents the separation of double helix. DNA ICLs are the sources of the cytotoxicity of antitumor and anticancer agents. This thesis focuses on investigating the reactivity of a varieties of aromatic compounds towards DNA. Some of these molecules can be activated by photo irradiation to induce DNA ICL formation via alkylation. Others undergo activation by H2O2 to release DNA cross-linking agents. We investigated the mechanism of function of these inducible DNA cross-linking agents as …

Data-Driven Population Inference From Gravitational-Wave Sources And Electromagnetic Counterparts, Siddharth Mohite Aug 2022

Data-Driven Population Inference From Gravitational-Wave Sources And Electromagnetic Counterparts, Siddharth Mohite

Theses and Dissertations

Gravitational-wave (GW) astronomy has presented an unprecedented way to view the universe and study populations of astrophysical objects such as merging compact binaries containing black holes (BHs) and neutron stars (NSs). With the latest catalog of observations detected by the Advanced LIGO-Virgo detector network, recent analyses are placing interesting constraints on the population of BHs and NSs in these binaries. In particular, we are learning a great deal about how these binaries are distributed as a function of their masses. Another aspect of GW astronomy that has the potential to provide insights into fundamental physics is the multi-messenger follow up …

Convivial Making: Power In Public Library Creative Places, Shannon Crawford Barniskis Aug 2022

Convivial Making: Power In Public Library Creative Places, Shannon Crawford Barniskis

Theses and Dissertations

In 2011, public libraries began to provide access to collaborative creative places, frequently called “makerspaces.” The professional literature portrays these as beneficial for communities and individuals through their support of creativity, innovation, learning, and access to high-tech tools such as 3D printers. As in longstanding “library faith” narratives, which pin the library’s existence to widely held values, makerspace rhetoric describes access to tools and skills as instrumental for a stronger economy or democracy, social justice, and/or individual happiness. The rhetoric generally frames these places as empowering. Yet the concept of power has been neither well-theorized within the library makerspace literature …

Interactions Between Tropical Cyclones And The Midlatitude Waveguide: Downstream Impacts And The Role Of Convective Processes, Kevin Prince Jul 2022

Interactions Between Tropical Cyclones And The Midlatitude Waveguide: Downstream Impacts And The Role Of Convective Processes, Kevin Prince

Theses and Dissertations

Significant amplification to the waveguide can occur when a recurving tropical cyclone (TC) interacts with the midlatitude flow, leading to significant downstream impacts. To this point in time, TC-midlatitude waveguide interactions have been conceptualized as primarily being driven by large-scale processes, with convective-scale contributions having been parameterized or neglected. This three-part study diagnoses the impact TC-midlatitude waveguide interactions have on the intensity evolution of downstream TCs and the role convective-scale processes play in TC-midlatitude waveguide interactions. Recurving TCs in both the North Atlantic and western North Pacific basins frequently interact favorably with upstream troughs, where a favorable interaction entails the …

Exploring The Spatial Distribution Of Air Pollutants And Covid-19 Death Rate: A Case Study For Los Angeles County, California, Akhil Mandalapu, Junfeng Jiao, Amin Azimian

International Journal of Geospatial and Environmental Research

Objective

Since March 2020, COVID-19 has rapidly spread across the world with over 240 million cases and over 5 million deaths as of November 2021. It has been unclear what role air pollutants may play in exacerbating respiratory illnesses such as COVID-19 due to their interaction with the respiratory system. The association with air pollutants and COVID-19 severity has been explored at the regional and metropolitan area, however it is unclear if such an association is consistent at the neighborhood level.

Methods

Weekly death rates from COVID-19 from March 2020 to November 2021 were compared using one-sided unpaired t-tests across …

Influence Of Nutrients And The Native On E. Coli Survival In The Beach Environment, Brigid Meyers May 2022

Influence Of Nutrients And The Native On E. Coli Survival In The Beach Environment, Brigid Meyers

Theses and Dissertations

E. coli is used as an indicator for water quality to determine if water poses a health risk for pathogens. Past research has shown that E. coli is present in high numbers in freshwater beach sands distinct from fecal pollution events, yet the precise mechanism for their persistence in not well understood. Persistent E. coli populations in sand can resuspend into adjacent water and lead to increased beach closures when no threat is present. This work identifies factors that influence the survival of E. coli in sand using laboratory microcosms to replicate beach conditions. Microcosms were deployed to examine the …

Spline Modeling And Localized Mutual Information Monitoring Of Pairwise Associations In Animal Movement, Andrew Benjamin Whetten May 2022

Spline Modeling And Localized Mutual Information Monitoring Of Pairwise Associations In Animal Movement, Andrew Benjamin Whetten

Theses and Dissertations

to a new era of remote sensing and geospatial analysis. In environmental science and conservation ecology, biotelemetric data recorded is often high-dimensional, spatially and/or temporally, and functional in nature, meaning that there is an underlying continuity to the biological process of interest. GPS-tracking of animal movement is commonly characterized by irregular time-recording of animal position, and the movement relationships between animals are prone to sudden change. In this dissertation, I propose a spline modeling approach for exploring interactions and time-dependent correlation between the movement of apex predators exhibiting territorial and territory-sharing behavior. A measure of localized mutual information (LMI) is …
