Premature ventricular contraction (PVC) is one of the most common arrhythmias which can cause palpitation, cardiac arrest, and other symptoms affecting the work and rest activities of a patient. However, patients hardly decipher their own feelings to determine the severity of the disease thus, requiring a professional medical diagnosis. This study proposes a novel method based on image processing and convolutional neural network (CNN) to extract electrocardiography (ECG) curves from scanned ECG images derived from clinical ECG reports, and segment and classify heartbeats in the absence of a digital ECG data. The ECG curve is extracted using a comprehensive algorithm …

Computer-Aided Diagnosis Of Low Grade Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma (Lgess), Xinxin Yang, Mark Stamp

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Low grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (LGESS) accounts for about 0.2% of all uterine cancer cases. Approximately 75% of LGESS patients are initially misdiagnosed with leiomyoma, which is a type of benign tumor, also known as fibroids. In this research, uterine tissue biopsy images of potential LGESS patients are preprocessed using segmentation and stain normalization algorithms. We then apply a variety of classic machine learning and advanced deep learning models to classify tissue images as either benign or cancerous. For the classic techniques considered, the highest classification accuracy we attain is about 0.85, while our best deep learning model achieves an …

Color dimensionality reduction is believed as a non-invertible process, as re-colorization results in perceptually noticeable and unrecoverable distortion. In this article, we propose to convert a color image into a grayscale image that can fully recover its original colors, and more importantly, the encoded information is discriminative and sparse, which saves storage capacity. Particularly, we design an invertible deep neural network for color encoding and decoding purposes. This network learns to generate a residual image that encodes color information, and it is then combined with a base grayscale image for color recovering. In this way, the non-differentiable compression process (e.g., …

Identification Of Chemical Structures And Substructures Via Deep Q-Learning And Supervised Learning Of Ftir Spectra, Joshua D. Ellis Aug 2021

Identification Of Chemical Structures And Substructures Via Deep Q-Learning And Supervised Learning Of Ftir Spectra, Joshua D. Ellis

MSU Graduate Theses

Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of organic compounds can be used to compare and identify compounds. A mid-FTIR spectrum gives absorbance values of a compound over the 400-4000 cm-1 range. Spectral matching is the process of comparing the spectral signature of two or more compounds and returning a value for the similarity of the compounds based on how closely their spectra match. This process is commonly used to identify an unknown compound by searching for its spectrum’s closes match in a database of known spectra. A major limitation of this process is that it can only be used to identify …

We aim to develop a deep-learning-based method for automatic proximal femur segmentation in quantitative computed tomography (QCT) images. We proposed a spatial transformation V-Net (ST-V-Net), which contains a V-Net and a spatial transform network (STN) to extract the proximal femur from QCT images. The STN incorporates a shape prior into the segmentation network as a constraint and guidance for model training, which improves model performance and accelerates model convergence. Meanwhile, a multi-stage training strategy is adopted to fine-tune the weights of the ST-V-Net. We performed experiments using a QCT dataset which included 397 QCT subjects. During the experiments for the …

Why Dilated Convolutional Neural Networks: A Proof Of Their Optimality, Jonatan Contreras, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich Jun 2021

Why Dilated Convolutional Neural Networks: A Proof Of Their Optimality, Jonatan Contreras, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the most effective image processing techniques is the use of convolutional neural networks that use convolutional layers. In each such layer, the value of the output at each point is a combination of input data corresponding to several neighboring points. To improve the accuracy, researchers have developed a version of this technique, in which only data from some of the neighboring points is processed. It turns out that the most efficient case -- called dilated convolution -- is when we select the neighboring points whose differences in both coordinates are divisible by some constant l. In this paper, …

The recently popular deep neural networks (DNNs) have a significant effect on the improvement of segmentation accuracy from various perspectives, including robustness and completeness in comparison to conventional methods. We determined that the naive U-Net has some lacks in specific perspectives and there is high potential for further enhancements on the model. Therefore, we employed some modifications in different folds of the U-Net to overcome this problem. Based on the probable opportunity for improvement, we develop a novel architecture by using an alternative feature extractor in the encoder of U-Net and replacing the plain blocks with residual blocks in the …

Predicting Carcass Cut Yields In Cattle From Digitalimages Using Artificial Intelligence, Darragh Matthews Jan 2021

Predicting Carcass Cut Yields In Cattle From Digitalimages Using Artificial Intelligence, Darragh Matthews

Theses

Beef carcass classification in Europe is predicated on the EUROP grid for both fatness and conformation. Although this system performs well for grouping visually similar carcasses, it cannot be used to accurately predict meat yields from these groups, especially when considered on an individual cut level. Deep Learning (DL) has proven to be a successful tool for many image classification problems but has yet to be fully proven in a regression scenario using carcass images. Here we have trained DL models to predict carcass cut yields and compared predictions to more standard machine learning (ML) methods. Three approaches were undertaken …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) is the initial stage of atrial fibrillation, one of the most common arrhythmia types. PAF worsens with time and affects the patient?s life quality negatively. In this study, we aimed to diagnose PAF early, so patients can start taking precautions before this disease gets worse. We used the atrial fibrillation prediction database, an open data from Physionet and constructed our approach using convolutional neural networks. Heart rate variability (HRV) features are calculated from time-domain measures, frequency-domain measures using power spectral density estimations (fast Fourier transform, Lomb-Scargle, and Welch periodogram), time-frequencydomain measures using wavelet transform, and nonlinear …
