Computer Science Minor Marketing Plan, Shannon Oryniak May 2018

Computer Science Minor Marketing Plan, Shannon Oryniak

Senior Honors Projects

Computer Science is one of the fastest growing industries with the highest job demand. It has allowed us to do things we’d never dream capable, and bring to life creations and projects in every field.

While it may not seem like it, computer science involves a great deal of creativity. There are thousands of different ways to code a program and billions of different uses for them. While not everyone may want to code programs for a living, I do believe having an understanding of computer science can be beneficial for any major or any career. Entrepreneurs can learn to …

Investigations Into Ring-Opening Polymerization Of Functionalized Ε-Caprolactones, Danielle N. Coderre, Matthew K. Kiesewetter May 2018

Investigations Into Ring-Opening Polymerization Of Functionalized Ε-Caprolactones, Danielle N. Coderre, Matthew K. Kiesewetter

Senior Honors Projects

Polymers are defined as large molecules constructed from small, repeating units (monomers) which make up everyday items, such as: plastic bags and bottles, waterproof coatings, pipes, etc. H-bonding urea (U) or thiourea (TU) catalysts paired with base cocatalysts used for organocatalytic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters have been shown to exhibit fast rates of polymerization and result in polymers with controlled molecular weights (Mn) and low polydispersity indexes (PDI). Additionally, organocatalytic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) techniques have been shown to be tolerant of the incorporation of functional groups into the monomer feed, which is vital for the catalytic synthesis of …

Women In Science: A Course, Krystyna Krupinski May 2018

Women In Science: A Course, Krystyna Krupinski

Senior Honors Projects

Ask any student to name five women who have made advancements in scientific fields and most likely they will not be able to name more than two. With a lack of courses highlighting women scientists’ achievements, this lack of knowledge is hardly surprising I am addressing this issue in my work. Through the researching of scientific advancements made by women, I have proposed a method to teach students about these scientists so names like Johnson, Franklin, and Curie become as commonplace as Einstein, Hawking, and Bohr. Frequently in science classes in middle schools and high schools, the focus is only …

Iodine To Calcium Ratios In Marine Carbonates As An Indicator Of Oxygen Levels, Angela Stahl Apr 2018

Iodine to Calcium Ratios in Marine Carbonates as an Indicator of Oxygen Levels

Sponsor: Rebecca Robinson (Graduate School of Oceanography)

The Earth goes through natural cycles of warm and cool periods. In the past,

warmer oceans during interglacial periods have been shown to hold less oxygen

in their waters compared to cooler, glacial oceans. For this research, we are

studying an area in the Eastern Tropical Pacific where it is known to have

variable concentrations of dissolved oxygen in the waters due to the influence of

the climate. Oxygen is a vital component for most organisms …
