Despite extremely starved conditions, caves contain surprisingly diverse microbial communities. Our research is geared toward understanding what ecosystems drivers are responsible for this high diversity. To asses the effect of rock fabric and mineralogy, we carried out a comparative geomicrobiology study within Carlsbad Cavern, New Mexico, USA. Samples were collected from two different geologic locations within the cave: WF1 in the Massive Member of the Capitan Formation and sF88 in the calcareous siltstones of the Yates Formation. Fish Species Introductions Provide Novel Insights Into The Patterns And Drivers Of Phylogenetic Structure In Freshwaters, Angela L. Strecker, Julian D. Olden

Despite long-standing interest of terrestrial ecologists, freshwater ecosystems are a fertile, yet unappreciated, testing ground for applying community phylogenetics to uncover mechanisms of species assembly. We quantify phylogenetic clustering and overdispersion of native and non-native fishes of a large river basin in the American Southwest to test for the mechanisms (environmental filtering versus competitive exclusion) and spatial scales influencing community structure. Contrary to expectations, non-native species were phylogenetically clustered and related to natural environmental conditions, whereas native species were not phylogenetically structured, likely reflecting human-related changes to the basin. Speciation is primarily regarded as an ancestral split that results in two distinct taxonomic units, and proceeds in stages along a continuum from initiation (i.e., population divergence) to completion (i.e., reproductively isolated species). Establishing how and why populations diverge, including the primary mechanisms influencing these events is a major objective for evolutionary scientists. Focusing on incipient forms, researchers attempt to disentangle the antagonistic nature of selection, genetic drift, and gene flow in the speciation process.
In chapter 1, I investigate the phylogenetic relationships of 14 closely related taxa within the mallard complex (Anas spp.) that underwent a radiation within the …
