Optical Characterization And Distribution Of Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter (Cdom) In Soil Porewater From A Salt Marsh Ecosystem, Catherine D. Clark, Paige Aiona, Jason K. Keller, Warren J. De Bruyn

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

To characterize chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in marsh porewaters and its contribution as a carbon source, optical properties (absorbance, fluorescence indices, 3-dimensional excitation-emission matrices [EEMs]) of soil porewater and surface water were measured in a southern Californian salt marsh. Absorption coefficients and fluorescence intensities were higher in porewater than in overlying surface waters, consistent with higher CDOM concentration at depth. Humic-type peaks A and C were observed in EEMs in all samples, and peak M was observed in surface waters and shallow porewater to -5 cm depth. Fluorescence:absorbance (flu:abs) ratios and spectral slopes (S) decreased across the surface interface, …

Molecular Probes For The Detection Of Zn2+ And Fe3+ Ions, Erendra Manandhar Dec 2014

Molecular Probes For The Detection Of Zn2+ And Fe3+ Ions, Erendra Manandhar

Dissertations

A number of molecular probes have been designed and synthesized for the detection of Zn2+ and Fe3+ ions. Two types of functional groups have been incorporated into the molecular scaffolds to utilize different fluorescent mechanisms. The first class of receptors contains a pyrene moiety. These molecular probes use the excimer mechanism for the detection of Zn2+ ion. The probes work well in an organic solvent with a detection limit of 20 nM (one ppb). Alternatives are made to make them water soluble, but this proved to be difficult. An interesting ion-induced self-assembly system will also be discussed. …

Interactions Of Eukaryotic Translation Initiation Factors And 3' Untranslated Region Of Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus Mrna During Protein Synthesis: A Study Of Equilibrium Binding, Kinetics And Thermodynamics, Bidisha Banerjee Jun 2014

Interactions Of Eukaryotic Translation Initiation Factors And 3' Untranslated Region Of Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus Mrna During Protein Synthesis: A Study Of Equilibrium Binding, Kinetics And Thermodynamics, Bidisha Banerjee

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF) 4F binding to mRNA is the first committed step in cap-dependent protein synthesis. Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV) employs a cap-independent mechanism of translation initiation which is mediated by a structural element BTE (BYDV translation element) located in the 3’ UTR of its mRNA. eIF4F bound the BTE and a translational inactive mutant with high affinity; thus questioning the role of eIF4F in translation of BYDV. To examine the effects of eIF4F in BYDV translation initiation, BTE mutants with widely different in vitro translation efficiencies ranging from 5-164% compared to WT were studied. Using fluorescence anisotropy …

Detection of biodiesel at low and high concentrations in diesel is highly desired in the aviation and fuel industries. Cross contamination of jet fuel with biodiesel may impact the thermal stability and freezing point which can cause deposits in the fuel system or cause the fuel to gel, leading to jet engine operability problems and possible engine flameout. A dye doped optical sensor utilizing the dye Nile Blue Chloride has been developed for quick and direct detection of biodiesel which mainly contains fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). The sensing mechanism relies on the solvatochromatic properties of the dye which undergoes …

On Readout Of Vibrational Qubits Using Quantum Beats, Dmytro Shyshlov, Eduardo Berrios, Martin Gruebele, Dmitri Babikov

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Readout of the final states of qubits is a crucial step towards implementing quantum computation in experiment. Although not scalable to large numbers of qubits per molecule, computational studies show that molecular vibrations could provide a significant (factor 2–5 in the literature) increase in the number of qubits compared to two-level systems. In this theoretical work, we explore the process of readout from vibrational qubits in thiophosgene molecule, SCCl2, using quantum beat oscillations. The quantum beats are measured by first exciting the superposition of the qubit-encoding vibrational states to the electronically excited readout state with variable time-delay pulses. …

Novel tetrasubstituted metal-free (2), zinc (II) (3), cobalt (II) (4), and copper (II) (5) phthalocyanines bearing 2-phenylethanolate groups on the peripheral positions were synthesized by the cyclotetramerization reaction of the phthalonitrile derivative 1. The new compounds were characterized by a combination of IR, ^1H NMR, ^{13}C NMR, UV-Vis, elemental analysis, and MS spectra data. The thermal stabilities of the phthalocyanine compounds were determined by thermogravimetric analysis. For metal-free (2) and zinc (3) phthalocyanines, photochemical (photodegradation and singlet oxygen quantum yields) and photophysical (fluorescence quantum yields and fluorescence lifetimes) properties were analyzed in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). The cobalt (4) and copper (5) …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Fluorophores For The Detection Of Lanthanides And Actinides, Robinson I. Roacho Jan 2014

Synthesis And Characterization Of Fluorophores For The Detection Of Lanthanides And Actinides, Robinson I. Roacho

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A series of fluorophores based in the boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) family were synthesized and characterized. These fluorophores have the capacity of being introduced to a carbamoyl methyl phosphine oxide (CMPO) lanthanide/actinide extractant. These blue, green and red emission fluorophores show high thermal/moisture stability and high fluorescence efficiencies. The fluorescence intensity seems to be dependent on the restricted rotation about the C(8)-C bond in 8-Ph-BODIPY. By taking advantage of this feature, a hydroxyl- containing BODIPY with high fluorescence intensity was synthesized to be incorporated to a CMPO carboxylic acid via esterification. Unfortunately, we did not observe an optical response upon the …

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis Of Novel Nonperipherally Substituted Metallophthalocyanines Bearing (7-(Trifluoromethyl)Quinolin-4-Yl)Oxy Groups, Di̇dem Evren, Hacer Yasemi̇n Yeni̇lmez, Ayfer Kalkan Burat

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The synthesis, characterization, and spectroscopic properties of novel nonperipherally tetrasubstituted metallophthalocyanines (zinc, cobalt, copper, manganese, and indium) bearing 4 (7-(trifluoromethyl)quinolin-4-yl)oxy units has been reported. The new compounds have been characterized using UV-Vis, IR, ^1H NMR, ^{13}C NMR, ^{19}F NMR, and mass spectroscopic data. The absorption properties of these new complexes were compared to those of peripherally substituted phthalocyanine derivatives. Based on the structural, spectroscopic, and absorption studies, it was found that the substitution effect altered the electronic structures significantly. The results provide useful information to understand the effect of peripheral or nonperipheral substitution on the properties of this macrocyclic ring. …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Evaluation Of Novel Bodipy Dyes With Theranostic Applications, Jaime Suzanne Hayes

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes, have garnered much attention in recent decades due to their enticing photophysical properties and their bioimaging applicability. Despite the progression of this field, the development of BODIPY based anti-cancer agents and radioimaging dyes has seen little progress. The utilization of fluorescent BODIPYs as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy, and as boron delivery agents for boron neutron capture therapy offers promise as theranostic agents. Additionally, BODIPY derivatives that absorb and emit in the near-IR regions of the electromagnetic spectrum and bear radioisotopes suitable for radioimaging techniques are of great interest. Chapter 1 is a concise overview of the …

Selective Fluorescence Sensing Of Salicylic Acid Using A Simple Pyrene Appended Imidazole Receptor, Md Wasi Ahmad, Bo Yeon Kim, Hong Seok Kim Dec 2013

Selective Fluorescence Sensing Of Salicylic Acid Using A Simple Pyrene Appended Imidazole Receptor, Md Wasi Ahmad, Bo Yeon Kim, Hong Seok Kim

Dr. Mohammad Wasi Ahmad (Md Wasi Ahmad)

A simple salicylic acid selective fluorescence receptor 1 was designed by combining 1-pyrenecarboxaldehyde and 1-(3-aminopropyl)imidazole. The selective sensing of salicylic acid resulted in a significant increase in monomer emissions due to the p–p interactions between the benzene and pyrene rings. The nature of the interactions between receptor 1 and salicylic acid was investigated further by 1H NMR spectroscopy, and the energy minimised structure of the complex between receptor 1 and salicylic acid was optimised. Receptor 1 showed the highest binding constant with 5-nitrosalicylic acid among all the aromatic carboxylic acids tested. 5-Nitrosalicylic acid formed a complex with receptor 1 at …
