Diffractive Optical Elements With A Large Angle Of Operation Recorded In Acrylamide Based Photopolymer On Flexible Substrates, Hoda Akbari, Izabela Naydenova, Lina Persechini, Sean Garner, Pat Cimo, Suzanne Martin

Articles

A holographic device characterised by a large angular range of operation is under development. The aim of this study is to increase the angular working range of the diffractive lens by stacking three layers of high efficiency optical elements on top of each other so that light is collected (and focussed) from a broader range of angles. The angular range of each individual lens element is important, and work has already been done in an acrylamide-based photosensitive polymer to broaden the angular range of individual elements using holographic recording at a low spatial frequency. This paper reports new results on the …

Antimicrobial Properties Of Nano-Silver: A Cautionary Approach To Ionic Interference, Kate Sheehy, Alan Casey, Anna Murphy, Gordon Chambers

Articles

Hypothesis: Metallic nanoparticles such as nano-silver have found many applications as alternative antimicrobials in recent years. However methods for determining their proposed antimicrobial activity have received little attention to date. The disk diffusion assay is commonly used as a demonstration of antimicrobial properties and is a regular feature in synthetic nanoparticle papers. The aim of this study was to assess its effectiveness in demonstrating the ‘‘nanoparticle specific’’ antimicrobial properties in the absence of ionic contributions from unreacted reducing agents and or impurities. Experiments: The disk diffusion assay was carried out on a range of silver nanoparticles, both in-house synthesised and …

Competitive Evaluation Of Data Mining Algorithms For Use In Cassification Of Leukocyte Subtypes With Raman Microspectroscopy, Adrian Maguire, I. Vega-Carrascal, Jane Bryant, Lisa White, Orla Howe, Fiona Lyng, Aidan Meade

Articles

Raman microspectroscopy has been investigated for some time for use in label-free cell sorting devices. These approaches require coupling of the Raman spectrometer to complex data mining algorithms for identification of cellular subtypes such as the leukocyte subpopulations of lymphocytes and monocytes. In this study, three distinct multivariate classification approaches, (PCA-LDA, SVMs and Random Forests) are developed and tested on their ability to classify the cellular subtype in extracted peripheral blood mononuclear cells (T-cell lymphocytes from myeloid cells), and are evaluated in terms of their respective classification performance. A strategy for optimisation of each of the classification algorithm is presented …

Quantitative Assessment Of Blood Coagulation By Cold Atmospheric Plasma, Caitlin Heslin, Daniela Boehm, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Michelle Laycock, Patrick Cullen, Paula Bourke

Articles

Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is produced by ionizing a chosen gas, thereby creating charged and reactive species. The reactive species generated are capable of inducing a range of biomedically relevant interactions including blood coagulation. However, the underlying biochemical processes of plasma-assisted blood coagulation are largely unknown, and data quantifying blood clot formation or the impact of system parameters on the intensity of the blood clot are scarce. In this study, blood coagulation was quantified by measuring hemoglobin absorbance. System parameters of the kINPen plasma jet were investigated and compared, including treatment time, distance from the plasma source and gas flow …

What Is Nanoscience?' - A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study Of Nanoscience Researchers' Experiences, Deepa Chari Sep 2014

What Is Nanoscience?' - A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study Of Nanoscience Researchers' Experiences, Deepa Chari

Doctoral

Nanoscience and nanotechnology have been described as a research area that integrates many scientific and engineering disciplines. However, the integration of disciplines is so complex that the disciplinarity of nanoscience and nanotechnology remains undefined. As a result, the nanoscience and nanotechnology area is viewed as multidisciplinary, or interdisciplinary science, or even as a separate discipline and there is no consensus regarding its disciplinarity. The previous studies conducted in order to describe the disciplinarity associated with this area have focused mainly on political, institutional and external factors while the cognitive aspects of disciplinarity of nanoscience and nanotechnology are still less understood. …

A Soft Condensed Matter Approach Towards Mathematical Modelling Of Mass Transport And Swelling In Food Grains, Michael Chapwanya, N. Misra

Articles

Soft condensed matter (SCM) physics has recently gained importance for a large class of engineering materials. The treatment of food materials from a soft matter perspective, however, is only at the surface and is gaining importance for understanding the complex phenomena and structure of foods. In this work, we present a theoretical treatment of navy beans from a SCM perspective to describe the hydration kinetics. We solve the transport equations within a porous matrix and employ the Flory–Huggin’s equation for polymer–solvent mixture to balance the osmotic pressure. The swelling of the legume seed is modelled as a moving boundary with …

Microfiber Coupler Based Label-Free Immunosensor, Lin Bo, Christy Charlton O'Mahony, Yuliya Semenova, Niamh Gilmartin, Pengfei Wang, Gerald Farrell

Articles

Optical microfibers and related structures which incorporate large evanescent field and minimal size offer new opportunities for biosensing applications. In this paper we report the development of an immunosensor based on a tapered microfiber coupler embedded in a low refractive index polymer. Biomolecules adsorbed on the microfiber coupler surface modify the surrounding refractive index. By immobilizing antigens on the surface of the sensing area, the microfiber coupler was able to operate as a label-free immunosensor to detect specific antibodies. We experimentally demonstrated for the first time the sensing ability of this sensor using a fibrinogen antigen-antibody pair. By monitoring the …

Improved Protocols For Vibrational Spectroscopic Analysis Of Body Fluids, Franck Bonnier, François Petitjean, Matthew Baker, Hugh Byrne Mar 2014

Improved Protocols For Vibrational Spectroscopic Analysis Of Body Fluids, Franck Bonnier, François Petitjean, Matthew Baker, Hugh Byrne

Articles

The applications of vibrational spectroscopy to the examination of human blood serum are explored. Although FTIR spectra can be recorded in aqueous solutions at (gelatin) concentrations as low as 100mg/L, the high-wavenumber region remains obscured by water absorption. Using Raman spectroscopy, high quality spectra of gelatine solutions as low as 10mg/L can be achieved, also covering the high-wavenumber regions. In human serum, spectral profiles are weak and partially obscured by water features. Dried deposits are shown to be physically and chemically inhomogeneous resulting in reduced measurement reproducibility. Concentration of the serum using commercially available centrifugal filter devices results in an …

Using Acrylamide Based Photopolymers For Fabrication Of Holographic Optical Elements In Solar Energy Applications, Hoda Akbari, Izabela Naydenova, Suzanne Martin

Articles

A holographic device is under development that aims to improve light collection in solar cells. The aim is to explore the potential of using photopolymer Holographic Optical Elements (HOE) to collect light from a moving source, such as the sun, and re-direct it for concentration by a holographic lens.. A working range of 45 degrees is targeted for such a device to be useful in solar applications without tracking. A photopolymer HOE is capable of efficiently re-directing light, but the angular selectivity of a single grating is usually of the order of one degree at the thicknesses required for high …

Vibrational Spectroscopic Analysis Of Body Fluids: Avoiding Molecular Contamination Using Centrifugal Filtration, Franck Bonnier, Matthew Baker, Hugh Byrne Jan 2014

Vibrational Spectroscopic Analysis Of Body Fluids: Avoiding Molecular Contamination Using Centrifugal Filtration, Franck Bonnier, Matthew Baker, Hugh Byrne

Articles

The use of centrifugal filtration for protein purification and concentration represents an important improvement for the application of vibrational spectroscopy to analysis of bodily fluids based on protein fractions with specific molecular weight. Vibrational spectroscopic techniques are highly specific and can potentially detect small variations in the protein content indicating the presence of different diseases, therefore usable as markers for early diagnostic. However, due to the high sensitivity of the techniques, it is essential to verify that no molecular contamination occurs during the preparation of the samples. Concentration of the blood serum using commercially available centrifugal filters has been shown …

A Photonic Crystal Fiber Based Polarimetric Sensor For Cure Monitoring Of Magneto-Rheological Smart Composite Material, Manjusha Ramakrishnan, Ginu Rajan, Yuliya Semenova, Y. Zhou, Stephen Jerrams, Gerald Farrell

Articles

A buffer stripped high birefringent photonic crystal fibre based polarimetric sensor is developed for monitoring the curing process of magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) smart composite material. Using the developed sensor, different phases of the MRE curing process are clearly visible from the phase shift variation of the embedded polarisation maintaining photonic crystal fibre (PM-PCF) sensor. During the curing process, the buffer stripped PM-PCF exhibits a stress/strain induced phase shift variation from 0 to 1.98 rad. This is a significantly large phase change, which can be used to very clearly identify the different stages in the curing process. For comparison, a fibre …

Suppression Of Raman Soliton Self-Frequency Shift In Photonic Cystal Fibers With Tellurite Subwavelength Core, Shua Wei, Jinhui Yuan, Chongxiu Yu, Sha Li, Boyuan Jin, Xiaoming Hu, Gerald Farrell, Qiang Wu

Articles

A new nonlinear evolution equation including the vector nature of the electromagnetic field and the frequency variation of the mode profile is derived. A kind of new nonlinearity is demonstrated. Its magnitude is strongly dependent on the waveguide geometrical parameters, which will lead to a suppression of the Raman soliton self-frequency shift in a photonic crystal fiber with a tellurite subwavelength core. Our results can be supported by the detailed numerical simulations

Economic Valuation Of The Mortality Benefits Of A Regulation On So2 In 20 European Cities, Olivier Chanel, Susann Henschel, Patrick J. Goodman, Antonis Analitis, Richard W. Atkinson, Alain Le Tertre, Ariana Zeka, Sylivia Medina

Articles

Background: Since the 1970s, legislation has led to progress in tackling several air pollutants. We quantify the annual monetary benefits resulting from reductions in mortality from the year 2000 onwards following the implementation of three European Commission regulations to reduce the sulphur content in liquid fuels for vehicles. Methods: We first compute premature deaths attributable to these implementations for 20 European cities in the Aphekom project by using a two-stage health impact assessment method. We then justify our choice to only consider mortality effects as short-term effects. We rely on European studies when selecting the central value of …

Low-Toxicity Diacetone Acrylamide-Based Photopolymer For Applications In Holography, Dervil Cody

Doctoral

Photopolymers are fast becoming one of the most popular holographic recording media due to their suitability for a wide range of holographic applications, such as sensors, diffractive optics and data storage. The majority of the investigated water-soluble holographic photopolymers are Acrylamide (AA) based. However, the toxic and carcinogenic nature of AA is a growing concern. In order for photopolymer recording media to be a viable option for holographic applications, efforts must be made to remove any occupational and environmental hazards involved in large-scale material development and device fabrication. The main objective of the work presented here is the development and …

Investigation Of The Sensitivity To Humidity Of An Acrylamide-Based Photopolymer Containing N-Phenylglycine As A Photoinitiator, Tatsiana Mikulchyk, Suzanne Martin, Izabela Naydenova

Articles

Sensitivity of holographic recording materials to the relative humidity (RH) of the environment often restricts their use in fabrication of holographic optical elements and other applications. It is important to develop materials with little or no sensitivity to humidity. In this paper the humidity response of transmission gratings recorded in an acrylamide-based photopolymer containing N-phenylglycine (NPG) as a photoinitiator is studied at RH = 20 – 90 %. The hologram is found to be completely insensitive to humidity at RH below 70 % and its diffraction efficiency remains constant. A decrease in diffraction efficiency is observed at RH = 80 …

A compact singlemode - photonic crystal fibre - singlemode fibre tip (SPST) refractive index sensor is demonstrated in this paper. A CO2 laser cleaving technique is utilsed to provide a clean-cut fibre tip which is then coated by a layer of gold to increase reflection. An average sensitivity of 39.1 nm/RIU and a resolvable index change of 2.56×10-4 are obtained experimentally with a ~3.2 µm diameter SPST. The temperature dependence of this fiber optic sensor probe is presented. The proposed SPST refractometer is also significantly less sensitive to temperature and an experimental demonstration of this reduced sensitivity is …

Diagnostics Of An O2–He Rf Atmospheric Plasma Discharge By Spectral Emission, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Mick Donegan, Patrick Cullen, Denis Dowling

Articles

In this paper optical emission spectroscopy (OES) is used as a Diagnostic technique for the measurement of atomic and molecular spectral emissions generated using a helium rf industrial atmospheric plasma jet system. The OES of neutral atomic spectral lines and molecular bands are investigated over a range of plasma process parameters.
Wavelength resolve optical emission profiles suggest that the emission of helium’s spectral lines shows that the high energy electrons have a larger influence than helium metastables on the overall spectral emission. Furthermore, the experimental data indicates that the use of high helium flow rates, in any confined open air …

Holographic Sensors: Three-Dimensional Analyte-Sensitive Nanostructures And Their Applications, Ali K. Yetisen, Izabela Naydenova, Fernando Da Cruz Vasconcellos, Jeffrey Blyth, Christopher R. R. Lowe

Articles

Holographic sensors are analytical devices that systematically diffract narrow-band light in the ultraviolet to near-infrared range for application in the detection and quantification of analytes and/or physical parameters. They can be functionalized with analyte-responsive materials to construct highly sensitive optical sensors for use in testing, where a visual readout, fast turnaround time, and reversibility are needed. Holography allows fabrication of disposable sensors that are lightweight for miniaturization and multiplexing purposes.3 Holographic sensors offer three capabilities on a single analytical device: (i) label-free analyte-responsive polymer, (ii) real-time, reversible quantification of the external stimuli, and (iii) three-dimensional visual image display.
