Meteorologiczne Determinanty Jakości Powietrza W Krakowie, Robert Oleniacz, Marek Bogacki, Mateusz Rzeszutek, Agata Kot Oct 2014

Meteorologiczne Determinanty Jakości Powietrza W Krakowie, Robert Oleniacz, Marek Bogacki, Mateusz Rzeszutek, Agata Kot

Robert Oleniacz

Air quality in the Agglomeration of Krakow is determined by many factors, which include, among others, unfavorable location and the resulting meteorological conditions unfavorable for self-cleaning of ambient air. The paper presents a few examples illustrating the impact of selected meteorological factors on some pollutant concentrations in the air in Krakow. Among these, special attention was paid to the ambient air temperature (indirectly influencing the level of air emissions from the municipal sector in the winter season) as well as the wind speed and the mixing layer height. On the basis performed analyzes were to draw conclusions on meteorological restrictions …

Transportation Safety And Access: A Case Study Of The St. Claude Bridge In New Orleans, Earthea Nance Jun 2014

Transportation Safety And Access: A Case Study Of The St. Claude Bridge In New Orleans, Earthea Nance

Earthea Nance, PhD (Stanford University, 2004)

The community-university collaborative model, first developed in early-1990s public health research, expands opportunities for new research partnerships and joint problem-solving. This model is ideally suited to land-grant colleges and urban research universities whose mission involves community engagement. At the University of New Orleans, this model is employed in “practicum” graduate courses offered in the Department of Planning and Urban Studies. One such practicum partnered with the Lower 9th Ward community in spring 2012 to address serious safety problems with the St. Claude Bridge. The bridge, which linked the lower and upper halves of the community and served as an essential …

The Role Of Social Capital And Local Institutions In Coping With Climate Stresses: The Case Of Krapum Chhouk Commune In Rural Cambodia, Dany Va, Michael Regan, Ros Taplin, Bhishna Bajracharya Mar 2014

The Role Of Social Capital And Local Institutions In Coping With Climate Stresses: The Case Of Krapum Chhouk Commune In Rural Cambodia, Dany Va, Michael Regan, Ros Taplin, Bhishna Bajracharya

Bhishna Bajracharya

Social capital is a central requirement for a successful climate change adaptation, especially in Cambodia where formal institutions are still poorly developed. Collective action and not-for-profit bonding are important for climate change adaptation; however, these are not easily developed. This study examined the local institutions vital for the livelihoods of citizens who live in flood-prone Krapum Chhouk commune in rural Cambodia. Through observations and in-depth interviews with the local community, it investigated social capital in terms of the dynamics of relationships, relations of trust, and social norms and practices. This study found that most networks were profit-oriented. Traditional practices such …

Assessment Of Pollutants In Streams Around A Cement Plant In Central Nigeria, Fanan Ujoh Ph.D, Muhammad Mamman Alhassan Ph.D Mar 2014

Assessment Of Pollutants In Streams Around A Cement Plant In Central Nigeria, Fanan Ujoh Ph.D, Muhammad Mamman Alhassan Ph.D

Dr. Fanan Ujoh

The study assessed the chemical and heavy metals content in surface water samples collected at 9 points from 3 different streams within a radius of 5 kilometers to the factory, and an additional control water sample collected from a stream at Tarhembe, 12 kilometers from the factory. Laboratory analyses were conducted for 18 parameters, while mean, maximum and minimum values, and standard deviation for all parameters tested were derived using SPSS Version 15. Using the WHO (2011) Guidelines for Drinking Water, the concentration levels of pollutants in water samples were determined for all 18 parameters to establish whether or not …

Contemporary Environmental Issues Of Landfill Leachate: Assessment & Remedies, Sumona Mukherjee Ms, Soumyadeep Mukhopadhyay Dr, Mohd Ali Hashim Dr, Bhaskar Sen Gupta Dr

Soumyadeep Mukhopadhyay Dr

Landfills are the primary option for waste disposal all over the world. Most of the landfill sites across the world are old and are not engineered to prevent contamination of the underlying soil and groundwater by the toxic leachate. The pollutants from landfill leachate have accumulative and detrimental effect on the ecology and food chains leading to carcinogenic effects, acute toxicity and genotoxicity among human beings. Management of this highly toxic leachate presents a challenging problem to the regulatory authorities who have set specific regulations regarding maximum limits of contaminants in treated leachate prior to disposal into the environment to …

Atmospheric Methane Over The Arctic Ocean: Thermal Ir Satellite And Ship- Based Observations, Leonid Yurganov Dec 2013

Atmospheric Methane Over The Arctic Ocean: Thermal Ir Satellite And Ship- Based Observations, Leonid Yurganov

Leonid Yurganov

Recent warming of the Arctic stimulated speculations about dissociation of methane hydrates in the Arctic seabed and a new climatic positive feedback. Here, for the first time, methane low tropospheric satellite retrievals over the Arctic from two instruments: AIRS (Atmospheric IR Sounder) and IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer) were analyzed. Analyzed are data for areas over open water with high values of the vertical thermal contrast (ThC, defined here as the temperature difference between the surface and altitude of 4 km); they have been found to be reliable. The seasonal cycles of the data well correlate with the cycles measured …
