Determining Scaphirhynchus Sturgeon Population Demographics And Dynamics: Implications For Range-Wide Management, Recovery, And Conservation, Martin J. Hamel

Sturgeons (Acipenseridae) have experienced world-wide declines as a result of anthropogenic effects such as over-harvest, habitat degradation, altered flow regimes, and pollution. Nearly all European and Asian sturgeon species have experienced population declines and have subsequently been classified as either threatened or endangered. North American sturgeons have experienced a similar plight in that all eight native sturgeon species are listed as endangered, threatened, or of special concern. Direct linkages between North American sturgeon declines and anthropogenic effects are difficult to assess due to scale considerations, fluctuating environmental conditions, difficulty in capture, and the interaction of all these effects. Comparing The Effects Of Interactive And Noninteractive Complementary Nutrients On Growth In A Chemostat, James P. Braselton, Martha L. Abell, Lorraine Braselton

We compare the effects of interactive and noninteractive complementary nutrients on the growth of an organism in the chemostat. We also compare these two situations to the case when the nutrients are substitutable. In previous studies, complementary nutrients have been assumed to be noninteractive. However, more recent research indicates that some complementary nutrient relationships are interactive. We show that interactive complementary and substitutable nutrients can lead to higher population densities than do noninteractive complementary nutrients. Polythiophenes are attractive candidate polymers for use in synthetic cell scaffolds as they are amenable to modification of functional groups as a means by which to increase biocompatibility. In the current study we analysed the physical properties and response of primary myoblasts to three thiophene polymers synthesized from either a basic bithiophene monomer or from one of two different thiophene monomers with alkoxy functional groups. In addition, the effect of the dopants pTS- and ClO4 - was investigated. Epitaxial Bi2FeMnO6 (BFMO) thin films deposited on various Nb:SrTiO3 substrates show that the lattice parameters are very sensitive to epitaxial strains. Compressive and tensile strains are induced to the in-plane lattice constants of the (100) and (111) oriented films, respectively, while that of the (110) oriented thin film stay unstrained. The thin films also exhibit a strongly anisotropic growth habit depending on the substrate. Spiral growth, such as in the (100) BFMO film, is unique in samples prepared by pulsed laser deposition. Extrinsic dielectric constants at low frequencies are attributed to oxygen vacancies via the Maxwell-Wagner effect. All the samples …

Surfaces decorated with uniformly dispersed catalytically active nanoparticles play a key role in many fields, including renewable energy and catalysis. Typically, these structures are prepared by deposition techniques, but alternatively they could be made by growing the nanoparticles in situ directly from the (porous) backbone support. Here we demonstrate that growing nano-size phases from perovskites can be controlled through judicious choice of composition, particularly by tuning deviations from the ideal ABO3 stoichiometry. Noncentrosymmetric praseodymium calcium oxyborate single crystals, PrCa4O(BO3)3 (PrCOB), were grown by the Czochralski technique. The monoclinic unit cell parameters were found to be a = 8.177 Å, b = 16.157 Å, c = 3.629 Å and Z = 2 with space group Cm. Crystal density was measured using the Archimedes method, being on the order of 3.47 g cm-3. Thermal properties of PrCOB were investigated, where the specific heat was found to be 0.63 J g-1 °C-1 at room temperature, increasing to 0.85 J g-1°C-1 at 700°C. The growth of age-0 fishes influences survival, especially in temperate regions where size-dependent over-winter mortality can be substantial. Additional benefits of earlier maturation and greater fecundity may exist for faster growing individuals. This study correlated prey densities, growing-degree days, water-surface elevation, turbidity, and chlorophyll a with age-0 walleye Sander vitreus growth in a south-central Nebraska irrigation reservoir. Growth of age-0 walleye was variable between 2003 and 2011, with mean lengths ranging from 128 to 231 mm by fall (September 30th–October 15th). The next generation of large scale surveys will not only measure cosmological parameters within the framework of general relativity, but will also allow for precision tests of the framework itself. At the order of linear perturbations, departures from the growth in the standard cosmological model can be quantified in terms of two functions of time and Fourier number k. We argue that in local theories of gravity, in the quasistatic approximation, these functions must be ratios of polynomials in k, with the numerator of one function being equal to the denominator of the other.
