Variational Multiscale Models For Charge Transport, Guo-Wei Wei, Qiong Zheng, Zhan Chen, Kelin Xia Nov 2012

Variational Multiscale Models For Charge Transport, Guo-Wei Wei, Qiong Zheng, Zhan Chen, Kelin Xia

Zhan Chen

This work presents a few variational multiscale models for charge transport in complex physical, chemical, and biological systems and engineering devices, such as fuel cells, solar cells, battery cells, nanofluidics, transistors, and ion channels. An essential ingredient of the present models, introduced in an earlier paper [Bull. Math. Biol., 72 (2010), pp. 1562--1622], is the use of the differential geometry theory of surfaces as a natural means to geometrically separate the macroscopic domain from the microscopic domain, while dynamically coupling discrete and continuum descriptions. Our main strategy is to construct the total energy functional of a charge transport system to …

Price's Law On Nonstationary Space-Times, Jason Metcalfe, Daniel Tataru, Mihai H. Tohaneanu Jun 2012

Price's Law On Nonstationary Space-Times, Jason Metcalfe, Daniel Tataru, Mihai H. Tohaneanu

Mihai H. Tohaneanu

In this article, we study the pointwise decay properties of solutions to the wave equation on a class of nonstationary asymptotically flat backgrounds in three space dimensions. Under the assumption that uniform energy bounds and a weak form of local energy decay hold forward in time we establish a t-3 local uniform decay rate (Price's law, Price 1972) for linear waves. As a corollary, we also prove Price's law for certain small perturbations of the Kerr metric. This result was previously established by the second author in (Tataru) on stationary backgrounds. The present work was motivated by the problem of …

Balance With Unbounded Complexes, Edgar E. Enochs, Sergio Estrada, Alina Iacob Jun 2012

Balance With Unbounded Complexes, Edgar E. Enochs, Sergio Estrada, Alina Iacob

Given a double complex X there are spectral sequences with the E2 terms being either HI (HII(X)) or HII(HI(X)). But if HI(X)=HII(X)=0, then both spectral sequences have all their terms 0. This can happen even though there is nonzero (co)homology of interest associated withX. This is frequently the case when dealing with Tate (co)homology. So, in this situation the spectral sequences may not give any information about the (co)homology of interest. In this article, we give a different way of …

Institutional Support For Computing Faculty Research Productivity: Does Gender Matter?, Monica M. Mcgill, Amber Settle Mar 2012

Institutional Support For Computing Faculty Research Productivity: Does Gender Matter?, Monica M. Mcgill, Amber Settle

Amber Settle

We address the question of how male and female computing faculty in the U.S. and Canada perceive research requirements and institutional support for promotion and tenure. Via a survey sent to approximately 7500 computing faculty at the 256 institutions that participate in the annual Taulbee Survey, our results identify differences in reported tenure and promotion requirements, including the number of publications required during the probationary period, the importance of the scope of publication venues, the importance of publishing in non-refereed journals, and the importance of collaborative presentations. Differences were also discovered in institutional support and the satisfaction levels with that …

Vatdt: Visual Assessment Of Cluster Tendency Using Diagonal Tracing, Yingkang Hu Jan 2012

Vatdt: Visual Assessment Of Cluster Tendency Using Diagonal Tracing, Yingkang Hu

Yingkang Hu

The visual assessment of tendency (VAT) technique, for visually finding the number of meaningful clusters in data, developed by J. C. Bezdek, R. J. Hathaway and J. M. Huband, is very useful, but there is room for improvements. Instead of displaying the ordered dissimilarity matrix (ODM) as a 2D gray-level image for human interpretation as is done by VAT, we trace the changes in dissimilarities along the diagonal of the ODM. This changes the 2D data structure (matrices) into 1D arrays, displayed as what we call the tendency curves, which enables one to concentrate only on one variable, namely the …

Selective Recognition Of H2po4 By A Cholestane-Imidazole-Zinc Ensemble, Jyoti Ramesh Jadhav, Md Wasi Ahmad, Hong Seok Kim Dec 2011

Selective Recognition Of H2po4 By A Cholestane-Imidazole-Zinc Ensemble, Jyoti Ramesh Jadhav, Md Wasi Ahmad, Hong Seok Kim

Dr. Mohammad Wasi Ahmad (Md Wasi Ahmad)

A new facile amphiphile cholestane-based zinc complex 4 containing a 3-aminopropylimidazole moiety at the 3a and 7a positions of cholestane was designed and synthesized. Recognition selectivity of the new receptor 4 with various anions was assessed by 1H NMR titration. Dihydrogen phosphate showed the highest binding affinity among all the tested anions

Dr. Mohammad Wasi Ahmad (Md Wasi Ahmad)

We report the synthesis, characterization and application of highly water-soluble fluoresceinpolyethyleneimine (PEI) coated gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3) nanoparticles to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and cell labeling (CL). The average particle diameter and average hydrodynamic diameter were estimated to be 3.92 and 7.5 nm, respectively. Fluorescein-PEI was prepared from EDC/NHS coupling method. The surface coating was characterized by the FT-IR absorption spectrum and the surface coating amount was estimated to be 22.42 wt% from a TGA analysis, corresponding to 0.65 nm22 grafting density. The fluorescein-PEI coated gadolinium oxide nanoparticles showed r1 and r2 of 6.76 and 20.27 s21mM21, respectively, and a strong …
