This project aims to understand how surface polishing affects different materials in the context of art conservation. These materials include both those used in the creation and preservation of art objects, and those used to house and display them in a museum. Conservators at SBE Conservation and Cooper Hewitt have been working on two series of art objects, Still Life #46 and Still Life #54 by Tom Wesselman, for the past 6 years. Social ties defined by phone calls made between people can be grouped to various affinity networks, such as family members, utility network, friends, coworkers, etc. An understanding of call behavior within each social affinity network and the ability to infer the type of a social tie from call patterns is invaluable for various industrial purposes. For example, the telecom industry can use such information for consumer retention, targeted advertising, and customized services. Flux And Photon Spectral Index Distributions Of Fermi-Lat Blazars And Contribution To The Extragalactic Gamma-Ray Background, Jack Singal, V. Petrosian, M. Ajello

We present a determination of the distributions of the photon spectral index and gamma-ray flux—the so-called log N–log S relation—for the 352 blazars detected with a greater than approximately 7σ detection threshold and located above ±20◦ Galactic latitude by the Large Area Telescope of the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope in its first year catalog. Because the flux detection threshold depends on the photon index, the observed raw distributions do not provide the true log N–log S counts or the true distribution of the photon index. Polarization-analyzed small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is a powerful tool for the study of magnetic morphology with directional sensitivity. Building upon polarized scattering theory, this article presents simplified procedures for the reduction of longitudinally polarized SANS into terms of the three mutually orthogonal magnetic scattering contributions plus a structural contribution. Special emphasis is given to the treatment of anisotropic systems. The meaning and significance of scattering interferences between nuclear and magnetic scattering and between the scattering from magnetic moments projected onto distinct orthogonal axes are discussed in detail. Applying data mining techniques on medical databases which contain un-structured and semi-structured data is a challenging task. It is not only due to the complexity of such databases but also due to the characteristics of the medical domain. This thesis describes how multiple layers of data mining techniques have been applied to a Human Brain Image Database system. It starts with data preparation which paves the way for conventional data analysis techniques to be applied to the data. Black hole perturbation theory predicts that a perturbed black hole will emit gravitational waves in a superposition of quasi-normal modes. Various astrophysical processes can produce such a black hole including the merger of two compact binary neutron stars or black holes. The final form of the waveform from such a system is known as a ringdown. We discuss the search through data from LIGO's fifth science run for ringdown gravitational waves from intermediate mass black holes using a matched filtering pipeline. The Allen Telescope Array was used to monitor Mars between 2010 March 9 and June 2, over a total of approximately 30 hr, for radio emission indicative of electrostatic discharge. The search was motivated by the report from Ruf et al. of the detection of non-thermal microwave radiation from Mars characterized by peaks in the power spectrum of the kurtosis, or kurtstrum, at 10 Hz, coinciding with a large dust storm event on 2006 June 8. For these observations, we developed a wideband signal processor at the Center for Astronomy Signal Processing and Electronics Research. This 1024 channel spectrometer calculates …
