My dissertation research addressed woodland dynamics and dendroclimatology on the volcanic badlands of western New Mexico. Catalytically relevant metal clusters were deposited on metal oxide supports. Palladium and gold were deposited on mixed morphology ZnO, and palladium was deposited on MgO(100). The materials were characterized with electron microscopy, photoluminescent spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The behavior of hydrogen on these materials, as well as bare ZnO, was studied using volumetric isotherms. The isotherms were used to determine the monolayer gas coverage, surface

The variety of fluid–mineral processes on the Earth is quite diverse, and these various processes can occur under a large range of geochemical conditions. Aqueous dissolution and alteration, hydration, protonation, solution–precipitation, diffusion, and fluid and isotope exchange are among the many fluid–mineral interaction processes that contribute to the overall cycling of elements on Earth. Historically, measurements of differential cross-sections for the neutron transfer reaction (d, p) on stable targets have been an important tool for extracting spectroscopic information. In particular, it is possible to make orbital angular momentum assignments and extract spectroscopic factors for ground states and excited states by comparing measurements to cross sections calculated for pure single-particle states. In recent years, the advent of rare isotope beams have made it possible to apply this method to increasingly exotic nuclei. 26Al(p,p)26Al and 26Al(p,p’)26Al* scattering reactions were performed at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The purpose of the elastic scattering study was to determine properties of previously uncharacterized 27Si levels above the proton threshold in the energy range E(c.m.) ~ 0.5 - 1.5 MeV and to calculate reaction rates for the 26Al(p,γ[gamma])27Si reaction that destroys 26Al. The space simulation chambers at Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC) allow for the testing and calibration of seeker sensors in cryogenic, high vacuum environments. During operation of these chambers, contaminant films can form on the components in the chamber and disrupt operation. Radii And Neutron Correlations Of (6,8)He Within The Gamow Shell Model, Georgios Papadimitriou

We study the spatial correlations between halo neutrons in 6,8He within the complex-energy Gamow Shell Model (GSM). To this end, we calculate the neutron and proton radii, and two-neutron correlations in a large shell model space consisting of the 0p3/2 resonance and non-resonant p-sd scattering continuum. We use schematic forces and the finite-range Modified Minnesota interaction.
The calculated charge radii, corrected for the core polarization and spin-orbit effects, are compared to the values extracted from measured atomic isotope shifts.
We find that the charge radius of 6He primarily depends on the two-neutron separation energy and the shell-model …

Analysis problems that must operate on the full range of a dataset are among the most difficult. Some of the primary challenges in this regard come from disk access, data managment, and programmability of analysis tasks on exascale architectures. Studies in human cranial variation are extensive and widely discussed. While skeletal biologists continue to focus on questions of biological distance and population history, group-specific knowledge is being increasingly used for human identification in medico-legal contexts. The importance of this research has been often overshadowed by both philosophic and methodological concerns. Many analyses have been constrained in their scope by the limited availability of representative samples and readily criticized for adopting statistical techniques that require user-guidance and a priori information. An energy functional is formulated for mass calculations of nuclei across the nuclear chart with major-shell occupations as the relevant degrees of freedom. The functional is based on Hohenberg-Kohn theory. Motivation for its form comes from both phenomenology and relevant microscopic systems, such as the three-level Lipkin Model. A global fit of the 17-parameter functional to nuclear masses yields a root- mean-square deviation of χ[chi] = 1.31 MeV, on the order of other mass models. Dendrochronological techniques are currently limited to the identification of visible fire scars. However, through the development of new dendrochemical techniques, the potential exists to provide insight into a broader array of pyric ecosystems. This dissertation reports on new information in the [beta minus] decay of the neutron-rich nucleus 81Zn, which populates states in its daughter nucleus 81Ga. This includes new [gamma]-ray transitions in the daughter nucleus, 81Ga, as well as a [beta]-delayed neutron branching ratio. This isotope was produced at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility of Oak Ridge National Laboratory through the Isotope Separation Online technique. They are fission fragments from proton-induced fission on a uranium carbide target. These fission fragments are ionized and both mass and isotopically separated before arriving at the Low Energy Radioactive Ion Beam Spectroscopy Station (LeRIBSS). The …

We determine the energy spectrum of the baryons by treating each of them as a three-body system with the interacting forces coming from a set of two-body potentials that depend on both the distance between the quarks and the spin and orbital angular momentum coupling terms. Liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry has become a powerful tool for investigating biological systems. Herein we describe the development of both isotope dilution mass spectrometry methods and targeted metabolomics methods for the study of metabolic and cell-cell signaling applications.

A putative yeast enzyme was characterized by discovery metabolite profiling, kinetic flux profiling, transcriptomics and structural biology. These experiments demonstrated that the enzyme shb17 was a sedoheptulose bisphosphatase that provides a thermodynamically dedicated step towards riboneogenesis, leading to the redefinition of the canonical pentose phosphate pathway.

In order to understand hydroclimate variability of future climate change, it is important to know the timing and range of natural climate change in the past. The Southeastern United States (SE) is situated along the poleward extent of projected subtropical drying, where the expression of past hydrological balances remains unclear. The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory with its muon spectrometer has the ability to detect muons over the range of pseudorapidity 1.1 < |eta| < 2.25. Single muon production is an important tool for studying heavy flavor production via semi-leptonic decays of open heavy flavor mesons. Because of their large mass, heavy quarks are produced in earlier stages of heavy ion collisions. Therefore, heavy flavor production can serve as an important probe of the Quark Gluon Plasma, a novel state of matter predicted to be created at RHIC. The measurement of the nuclear modification factor of open heavy flavor at forward rapidity in Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV is presented. Measurements of heavy flavor production in p+p collisions at sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV will be also presented.

The Pulaski fault is one of the master thrust faults in the Appalachian Alleghanian fold-thrust belt. Detailed geologic mapping of Cambrian and Ordovician strata in northeastern Tennessee revealed key structural and stratigraphic characteristics for distinguishing the Pulaski thrust sheet from its footwall, the Saltville thrust sheet. Unlike most thrust systems in the Valley and Ridge, the Pulaski records at least two deformation phases. Geometric and crosscutting relationships along parts of the Pulaski thrust sheet in this study area and in southwestern Virginia suggest hanging wall and possibly some footwall deformation prior to the emplacement of the thrust sheet. Reliable density estimates of game and keystone species such as white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are desirable to set proper management strategies and for evaluating those strategies over time. However, traditional methods for estimating white-tailed deer density have been inhibited by behavior, densely forested areas that can hamper observation (detection), and invalid techniques of estimating effective trapping area. Petrologic analysis of first-cycle clastic sediments derived from a single source in an arid environment provides a means to determine how well they resemble the petrology and geochemistry of their source. The Stepladder Mountains, located in the Mojave Desert of southeastern California, represents a well-controlled location (i.e., arid environment; single, known source; short transport distance) to examine how naturally formed sediments acquire their compositions. Compositional modifications associated with sediment production were resolved through direct examination of the weathered components (regolith, grus, and sediments). Aeolian processes are major determinants of geomorphology on bodies in the Solar System possessing an atmosphere-surface interface and transportable sediment, including Earth, Mars, Venus, and Titan. Substantial efforts have been made over the last few decades to understand these processes using specialized wind tunnels, field studies, and, more recently, numerical simulations. Bioavailable phosphorus (P) has traditionally been measured as inorganic orthophosphate (PO4) while organic P (Po) has been considered of limited relevance to short-term biological consumption. However, enzymes secreted by bacteria and fungi which serve to mineralize Po are ubiquitous in the environment and may contribute significant bioavailable P over time. This work introduces a closed-form analytical solution for the transverse vorticoacoustic wave in a circular cylinder with arbitrary headwall injection. This particular configuration mimics the conditions leading to the onset of traveling radial and tangential waves in a simple liquid rocket engine (LRE). Assuming a short cylindrical chamber with an injecting headwall, regular perturbations are used to linearize the problem’s mass, momentum, energy, ideal gas and isentropic relations. This thesis addresses an expansion of the control programs for the Cyton Alpha 7D 1G arm. The original control system made use of configurable software which exploited the arm’s seven degrees of freedom and kinematic redundancy to control the arm based on desired behaviors that were configured off-line. Conventional archaeological excavation methods are, by nature, extremely invasive and result in study areas being irrevocably altered for the sake of research. For this reason, near-surface geophysical techniques have been incorporated into archaeological investigations to aid in determining the locations of buried features with minimal damage to the site. The objective of this research was to perform a geophysical survey at an archaeological site on the Akrotiri Peninsula in Cyprus to locate evidence of a Roman naval base and to develop an improved data management workflow that will improve the usefulness of geophysical data to archaeologists.
