In computer graphics, algorithms that attempt to create photographic images by simulating light transport are collectively known as Global Illumination methods. The most versatile of these are based on ray tracing (following ray paths through a scene), and numerical integration using random or quasi-random sampling. While ray tracing and sampling methods in global illumination have progressed much in the last two decades, the goal of fast and accurate simulation of light transport remains elusive. This work focuses on generating approximations of complex T-spline surfaces with similar but less complex T-splines. Two approaches to simplifying T-splines are proposed: a bottom-up approach that iteratively refines an over-simple T-spline to approximate a complex one, and a top-down approach that evaluates existing control points for removal in producing an approximations. This thesis develops and compares the two simplification methods, determining the simplification tasks to which each is best suited. In addition, this thesis documents supporting developments made to T-spline research as simplification was developed.

This research provides realistic techniques to visualize the process of damage to residential building caused by hurricane force winds. Three methods are implemented to make the visualization useful for educating the public about mitigation measures for their homes. First, the underline physics uses Quick Collision Response Calculation. This is an iterative method, which can tune the accuracy and the performance to calculate collision response between building components. This project included the development of a multi-user game that takes place in a 3 dimensional world of the computer science department. Basically, the game allows prospective students to meet existing students and faculty in a virtual open house that takes place within the third floor of Jack Brown Hall. Users can walk around Jack Brown Hall and type text messages to chat with each other.

The Persistence of Vision Ray Tracer, commonly known as POV-Ray, is a computer graphics package that can be used to produce highly sophisticated and photorealistic images and animations. POV-Ray is widely used in the computer graphics community for a diverse variety of applications, including teaching college courses, creating visual music animations, and generating computer art. Although the popularity of POV-Ray is apparent, the teaching materials available for the package are confusing, disorganized, and inaccessible.
