Non-steady-state kinetic models may be used for treatment of steady-state kinetic data in case when algebraic elaboration of steady-state kinetic equations is impossible or complicated. The proposed approach includes numerical integration of time-dependent differential equations until achievement of steady-state, resulting in possibility to numerically obtain the rate values for separate reaction stages for given composition of reaction mixture. The obtained non-steady-state model may be then applied in simulation of catalyst pellets and catalyst beds in research and engineering purposes. The case study demonstrates application of such approach for steady-state kinetic description of complicated reaction system of H2S oxidation by oxygen. …

The paper presents a general analysis of the suitability of individual elements of the flue-gas treatment system used in SGL Carbon SA in Nowy Sacz (Poland) for the graphitization process carried out in new LWG furnaces (Castner type). The flue-gas treatment system consisted of two installations: catalytic afterburning and flue-gas desulfurization. The analysis of the suitability of various methods of flue-gas treatment was based primarily on the assessment of the effects of their application, including the reduction of concentrations of selected components in post-graphitizing gases. The work also summarizes the results of evaluation of the functioning of the whole flue-gas …

Inverting For Heterogeneous Slip On Three-Dimensional Fault Systems; A First Step Toward Understanding Fault Mechanics, Phillip Resor, D Pollard, F Maerten

Many studies of earthquake triggering and fault interaction have relied on highly-idealized fault geometries and slip distributions. Geological and geophysical observations, however, reveal that faults typically are not single planar surfaces with uniform slip bounded by rectangular tiplines, but are composed of multiple curved surfaces with curved tiplines and heterogeneous slip distributions. The segments typically are organized into echelon, conjugate, and intersecting patterns. The discontinuities, bends, intersections, and slip heterogeneities generate stress concentrations that may promote or inhibit slip on nearby faults and thus play an important role in the mechanics of fault systems. It is therefore important to incorporate …

This paper evaluates a new form of public participation in environmental monitoring and regulation advanced through local bucket brigades, which allow community members to sample air emissions near industrial facilities. These brigades represent a new form of community environmental policing, in which residents participate in collecting, analyzing, and deploying environmental information, and more importantly, in an array of public policy dialogues. Use of this sampling technology has had marked effects on local residents' perceptions and participation in emergency response and citizens' right-to-know. However, when viewed through the lens of the more developed literature on community policing, the bucket brigades are …
