The plant genes required for the growth and reproduction of plant pathogens are largely unknown. In an effort to identify these genes, we isolated Arabidopsis mutants that do not support the normal growth of the powdery mildew pathogen Erysiphe cichoracearum. Here, we report on the cloning and characterization of one of these genes, PMR6. PMR6 encodes a pectate lyase-like protein with a novel C-terminal domain. Consistent with its predicted gene function, mutations in PMR6 alter the composition of the plant cell wall, as shown by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. pmr6-mediated resistance requires neither salicylic acid nor the ability to perceive …

Karst flow systems formed in carbonate rocks have been recognized as a sink for atmospheric carbon that originates as gaseous carbon dioxide and ends up as dissolved aqueous carbon, primarily as bicarbonate. While measurements of the magnitude of the sink associated with carbonate rock dissolution have assumed that half of the dissolved inorganic carbon leaving a given catchment comes from the mineral and half from the atmosphere, consideration of the kinetics of carbonate mineral dissolution in acid solutions suggests that the ratio is enriched in mineral-source carbon to an extent that depends on the geochemical environment of mineral/fluid contact. The nature and origin of the Medusae Fossae Formation (MFF) on Mars has been debated since the return of the first Viking images. The MFF's young age, distinctive surface texture, and lack of obvious source have prompted multiple hypotheses for its origin. This study uses data from the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) mission to examine the MFF at all available scales. We discuss and quantify observations from Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) topography and Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) images to better constrain the origin of the MFF. Little statewide geospatial data was available for Kentucky caves and karst in the past. Recent trends in land development have prompted a distinct need for these data in order to help minimize impact to cave and karst resources. During the past two years, the I-66 Special Project of the National Speleological Society, The Kentucky Speleological Survey, and the Kentucky Geological Survey have gathered, archived, and developed karst data for the state. Current projects include publication of karst basin maps, archiving cave entrance locations, archiving and georeferencing cave maps, creating polygon coverages of cave conduits, and a statewide sinkhole digitization project. …

New apatite and zircon fission‐track (AFT, ZFT) ages from Mesozoic sediments and adjacent crystalline rocks from southern New England reveal age gradients from Middle Jurassic to Early Cretaceous. These gradients reflect the rotation of crustal blocks after the setting of the youngest AFT ages (∼140 Ma). The AFT ages of 168–98 Ma for 32 samples of Paleozoic metamorphic rocks east and west and within the Hartford Basin of Massachusetts and Connecticut indicate that unroofing in these regions occurred from Late Jurassic through Early Cretaceous. We apply trajectory mapping to an 8-year intercomparison of ozone observations from the Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE) (V19) and Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE) II (V6.00) for the months March, May, June, September, October, and December from the period December 1991 to October 1999. Our results, which represent the most extensive such intercomparison of these two data sets to date, suggest a root-mean-square difference between the two data sets of >15% below 22 km in the tropics and of 4–12% throughout most of the rest of the stratosphere. This is a review of United States sustainable development efforts at the national level from 1992-2002. At the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in 1992, the United States and other countries agreed to develop and implement a national sustainable development strategy in order to fully integrate environmental matters into national decision making. In this period, the United States did not have such a strategy. Through much of the Clinton Administration, the President's Council on Sustainable Development (PCSD) (1993-1999) provided the basis for such a strategy through a rich variety of policy recommendations, but relatively little effort was made …

Oxygen isotope variations in ice cores from Bolivia and Peru are highly correlated with sea surface temperatures (SSTs) across the equatorial Pacific Ocean, which are closely linked to ENSO variability. Circulation anomalies associated with this variability control moisture flux from the equatorial and tropical Atlantic Ocean and Amazon Basin to the ice core sites. Below average SSTs lead to higher accumulation rates and isotopically lighter snow; such conditions are also associated with lower atmospheric freezing levels. During warm events, opposite conditions prevail. Oxygen isotope variations in an ice core from the Himalayas also reflect SST variations in the equatorial Pacific …

We obtained quantitative multivariate data from each varve of a minerogenic lacustrine sequence from the Canadian High Arctic, using an image analysis technique applied to thin-sections. The information on each varve from the uppermost core section was compared with a 35 yr meteorological dataset. Snowmelt intensity, which is an index reflecting the energy available for sediment transport, correlates well with the median grain-size measured for each varve, as well as with the weight of the 10–20 and 20–60 mm fractions. The proportion of fine silt also correlates with low intensity summer precipitation. This methodology allows us to decipher the climatic …

Svensmark and Friis-Christensen [1997] proposed a “cosmic ray-cloud cover” hypothesis that cosmic ray flux, modulated by solar activity, may modify global cloud cover and thus global surface temperature by increasing the number of ions in the atmosphere, leading to enhanced condensation of water vapor and cloud droplet formation. We evaluate this idea by extending their period of study and examining long-term surface-based cloud data (from national weather services and the Global Telecommunication System) as well as newer satellite data (International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) D2, 1983–1993). The branching fractions of the exclusive decays B0-->K(*0)gamma and B+-->K(*+)gamma are measured from a sample of (22.74+/-0.36)x10(6) BB decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider. We find B (B0-->K(*0)gamma) = [4.23+/-0.40(stat)+/-0.22(syst)]x10(-5), B(B+-->K(*+)gamma) = [3.83+/-0.62(stat)+/-0.22(syst)]x10(-5) and constrain the CP-violating charge asymmetry to be -0.170K(*)gamma)<0.082 at 90% C.L.

Michael Williams
We report branching fraction measurements for exclusive decays of charged and neutral B mesons into two-body final states containing a charmonium meson. We use a sample of 22.72±0.36 million BB̅ events collected between October 1999 and October 2000 with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage rings at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The charmonium mesons considered here are J/ψ, ψ(2S), and χc1, and the light meson in the decay is either a K, K*, or π0.

We measure the branching fractions of the psi(2S) meson to the leptonic final states e+e- and mu+mu- relative to that for psi(2S)-->J/psi pi+pi-. The method uses psi(2S) mesons produced in the decay of B mesons at the Upsilon(4S) resonance in a data sample collected with the BABAR detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Using previous measurements for the psi(2S)-->J/psi pi+pi- branching fraction, we determine the e+e- and mu+mu- branching fractions to be 0.0078+/-0.0009+/-0.0008 and 0.0067+/-0.0008+/-0.0007 respectively.

We present a measurement of CP-violating asymmetries in B0-->pi(+)pi(-) decays based on a 41.8 fb(-1) data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. We fully reconstruct one neutral B meson as a B0-->pi(+)pi(-) CP eigenstate and identify the flavor of the accompanying B meson from its decay products. From the asymmetry in the distribution of the time intervals between the two B meson decay points, we obtain the CP-violating asymmetry parameters S(pipi)=-1.21(+0.38)(-0.27)(stat)+0.16-0.13(syst) and A(pipi)=+0.94(+0.25)(-0.31)(stat)+/-0.09(syst).

Apatite fission-track (AFT) and structural data outline the Late Cretaceous−Cenozoic history of the southern Tan-Lu fault zone (TLFZ), one of Asia's major faults, the Triassic–Jurassic Dabie orogen, Earth's largest track of ultrahigh-pressure rock exposure, and its foreland, the Yangtze foreland fold-thrust belt. The fission-track analyses utilized the independent (φ-), Z- and ξ-methods for age determination, which yielded within error identical ages. Ages from Triassic–Jurassic syn-orogenic foreland sediments are younger than their depositional age and thus were reset. A group of ages records rapid cooling following shallow emplacement of granitoids of the widespread latest Jurassic−Early Cretaceous “Yanshanian” magmatism. Most ages are …

We present a new 3D slip-inversion method based on the analytical solution of an angular dislocation in a linear-elastic, homogeneous, isotropic, whole- or half-space. The approach uses a boundary element method (BEM) that employs planar triangular elements of constant displacement to model fault surfaces. Discretization of surfaces into triangular boundary elements allows the construction of complex 3D fault surfaces with irregular tipline and no overlaps or gaps. Global Positioning System (GPS) data from southern Central America and northwestern South America were collected during 1991, 1994, 1996, and 1998 in Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela. These data reveal wide plate boundary deformation and escape tectonics occurring along an approximately 1400 km length of the North Andes; locking of the subducting Nazca plate and strain accumulation in the Ecuador-Colombia forearc; ongoing collision of the Panama arc and Colombia; and convergence of the Caribbean plate with Panama and South America. Elastic modeling of observed horizontal displacements in the Ecuador forearc is consistent with partial locking (50%) in the …
