The Progression Of Recycling In Bowling Green, Kentucky, Susan Marklin
The Progression Of Recycling In Bowling Green, Kentucky, Susan Marklin
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Recycling is an important issue when dealing with solid waste. It keeps many tons of garbage out of our landfills and prolongs landfill life. Although many people in the Bowling Green area participate in the mandatory recycling program, there are still many who do not. The number of people who participate in the program has steadily grown over the past five years; however, there are still many people who need to get involved. This research argues that much effort has been put into recycling in recent years at the global, national, and local level. However, it also argues that even …

Application Of Morphometric Relationships To Active Flow Networks Within The Mammoth Cave Watershed, John Glennon
Application Of Morphometric Relationships To Active Flow Networks Within The Mammoth Cave Watershed, John Glennon
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Numerous quantitative relationships have been formulated to describe the nature of surface-drainage networks. These parameters have been used in various studies of geomorphology and surface-water hydrology, such as flood characteristics, sediment yield, and evolution of basin morphology. Little progress has been made in applying these quantitative descriptors to karst flow systems due to the lack of sufficiently complete data and inadequate technology for processing the large, complex data sets. However, as a result of four decades of investigation, an abundance of data now exists for the Mammoth Cave Watershed providing the opportunity for broader quantitative research in the organization of …
A Theoretical Study Of The Interactive Communication Process In Video Game Playing: A Symbolic Interactionist Approach, Nevsal Tiryakioglu
A Theoretical Study Of The Interactive Communication Process In Video Game Playing: A Symbolic Interactionist Approach, Nevsal Tiryakioglu
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Video games have become the most popular leisure activity among children and adolescents. The increasing popularity of video games has urged researchers to determine the effects of video game playing on youngsters. Given the fact that most popular video games are violent in nature, much of the research has primarily focused on the correlation between playing video games with violent content and aggressive behavior in children. Most researchers have relied on previous media violence research, assuming similarities between television viewing and video game playing. However, video games are interactive media allowing the player to participate in the game scenario, which …
Dye Tracing To Delineate Drainage Basins And Determine Groundwater Sensitivity, Mammoth Cave, Kentucky; With Special Reference To Potential Groundwater Contamination From Spills Along Interstate I-65, Arthur Capps
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The Mammoth Cave System of south central Kentucky encompasses more than 560 km of surveyed cave passages. The largest groundwater basin (244 km2) found within this cave system emerges from the Turnhole Bend Spring on the Green River. During high flow conditions, water from this groundwater basin will spill over into the Echo River section of the cave. Previous research, including cave mapping and dye tracing (Quinlan and Ray, 1989; Currens and Ray, 1998; Coons, 1994), has delineated the boundaries of spring groundwater basins for numerous springs along the Green and Barren Rivers. These data showed that 60% of the …
Metalation Of The Di- And Tri-Methoxybenzenes, Phillip Shelton
Metalation Of The Di- And Tri-Methoxybenzenes, Phillip Shelton
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Hydrocarbon solvents are known to be unreactive towards organolithium reagents and also to afford little support for ortho-metalation reactions. In contrast, both m- and odimethoxybenzene afford 80% "ion-multiple specific" monometalation in hydrocarbon solvent (n-hexane, cyclohexane, toluene) without the addition of any catalyst (ether or amine). These observations are, in part, attributed to the 1,2- and 1,3- formation of the n-BuLi dimer, the most reactive form of n-BuLi. In other words these substrates are acting in a "substrate-catalyzed" manner. Extensions of these concepts to 1,2,3-, 1,2,4- and 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzenes have led to further unusual observations. In particular, the 1,2,3-system affords an interesting …
A Construction Of Compactly-Supported Biorthogonal Scaling Vectors And Multiwavelets On $R^2$, Bruce Kessler
A Construction Of Compactly-Supported Biorthogonal Scaling Vectors And Multiwavelets On $R^2$, Bruce Kessler
Mathematics Faculty Publications
In \cite{K}, a construction was given for a class of orthogonal compactly-supported scaling vectors on $\R^{2}$, called short scaling vectors, and their associated multiwavelets. The span of the translates of the scaling functions along a triangular lattice includes continuous piecewise linear functions on the lattice, although the scaling functions are fractal interpolation functions and possibly nondifferentiable. In this paper, a similar construction will be used to create biorthogonal scaling vectors and their associated multiwavelets. The additional freedom will allow for one of the dual spaces to consist entirely of the continuous piecewise linear functions on a uniform subdivision of the …
Park And Ride Feasibility Analysis For The Evansville, Indiana, Metropolitan Area, Brian Howard
Park And Ride Feasibility Analysis For The Evansville, Indiana, Metropolitan Area, Brian Howard
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Congested roadways and declining air quality standards are major concerns for many communities faced with the challenges of suburban growth and city decay. How each community chooses to fight the problems created by urban sprawl depends greatly on individualized characteristics of the community. Analyzing and understanding unique values of each community provides a sound foundation for measures designed to promote sustainable growth initiatives. The Evansville, Indiana, region is experiencing many of the growing pains associated with increased residential, commercial, and industrial development. Many roadways are currently strained near capacity, and traffic problems are anticipated to increase over the next 20 …
Elgenvalues Of Fibonacci-Like Sequences, Elyssa Hurst
Elgenvalues Of Fibonacci-Like Sequences, Elyssa Hurst
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The familiar Fibonacci sequence 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,... can be described by the recurrence relation x(0) = 1, x(1) = 1, x(n) = x(n-1) + x(n-2). For this relation, as n → oo, x(n+1) → 1 +√5 x(n) 2 ' which is the familiar golden ratio. This value is also the dominant eigenvalue of the above recurrence relation. In this series, we consider the dominant eigenvalue of some Fibonacci-like sequence of the form x(n) = ∑n-1/k+1 ak Zk (n-k) where the Zk's are independent random variables with Zk = {+1 with probability p - 1 with probability q, with p + q = …
Power Series Solutions To Ordinary Differential Equations, John Lagrange
Power Series Solutions To Ordinary Differential Equations, John Lagrange
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In this thesis, the reader will be made aware of methods for finding power series solutions to ordinary differential equations. In the case that a solution to a differential equation may not be expressed in terms of elementary functions, it is practical to obtain a solution in the form of an infinite series, since many differential equations which yield such a solution model an actual physical situation. In this thesis, we introduce conditions that guarantee existence and uniqueness of analytic solutions, both in the linear and nonlinear case. Several methods for obtaining analytic solutions are introduced as well. For the …

A Model Of Precipitation Rates In Kentucky, 1965-1996, Kevin Cary
A Model Of Precipitation Rates In Kentucky, 1965-1996, Kevin Cary
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Hourly precipitation data from thirty cooperative stations in Kentucky from 1965 to 1996 were used to determine the diurnal distribution of precipitation rates. Descriptive summaries for the diurnal distribution for each climate division in Kentucky and for Kentucky as a whole were calculated. In each case, the trends were similar. Precipitation rates increased into the afternoon and then decreased until sunrise. A stochastic model was developed to estimate mean seasonal precipitation rates in Kentucky by using regional and localized parameters. More than half of the variation (r2 = 0.57) in precipitation rates can be explained by the following variables: 1) …
In-Cave Dye Tracing And Drainage Basin Divides In The Mammoth Cave Karst Aquifer, Kentucky, Chris Groves, Joe Meiman, Shannon Herstein
In-Cave Dye Tracing And Drainage Basin Divides In The Mammoth Cave Karst Aquifer, Kentucky, Chris Groves, Joe Meiman, Shannon Herstein
Earth, Environmental, and Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications
Karst ground-water basin divides are generally depicted as two-dimensional lines on maps, but they are better considered as three-dimensional surfaces within the subsurface. Dye traces are necessary to map out these surfaces and to locate conduits inaccessible to cave surveyors, and are indispensable for understanding the geometry of the complex networks of flow paths through the aquifer. A key reason why the Mammoth Cave System is the world's longest known cave is that its passages extend over several major ground-water basins. The divides between these basins define the drainage system geometry and precise location of them is critical for understanding …
