A description of three three projects having to do with virtual reality. The first is the Nanomanipulator, developed at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Department of Computer Science in conjunction with the UCLA Department of Chemistry in 1991. It is a machine that allows the user to interact with microscopic particles previously only visible in 2D from an electron microscope. The second project, The Augmented Reality Project, also developed at the Chapel Hill Department of Computer Science. This device used ultrasound images to be placed over a body allowing the user to see inside of it. The final …

"Be Not Afraid", Juana Acrivos

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

If l asked what am I doing here? the answer should be that I am here to recount the experience of a condensed matter scientist teaching frontier chemical physics at a so called "Undergraduate Institution with ≈47% Minorities" But should one distinguish undergraduate from graduate ability, minority from non-minority ability to do frontier science that shall benefit everyone? I hope to convince you the answer is no; the title of my address was borrowed from Pope John Paul's recent best seller in order to have the courage to do the job. This attitude is probably no different from anyone else …

Dynamic Phenomena In Layer Superconducting Cuprate And Organic Metals, Juana Acrivos, Lei Chen, C. Burch

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

Dynamic electron spin resonance (ESR) and extended x-ray absorption edge fine structure (XAFS) measurements suggest that layered organic metals and cuprate superconductors behave similarly. The response to microwave radiation in a modulated external magnetic field indicates that: (i) triplet state, T * ESR is observed below Tc for both; (ii) the condensation of free spin doublet D to T* occurs above the transition temperature to superconductivity Tc (10 ± 1 K for the organic metal (BEDT-TTF)3Ta2F11 and 92 to 12 K for YBa2Cu3O7-δ and its rare earth derivatives); (iii) antiferomagnetic (AF) resonance is detected above Tc for the organic metal. …
