Who Governs the Public Lands: Washington? The West? The Community? (September 28-30)

Shifting policy objectives and management approaches for the public lands of the West are provoking heated debate about how these decisions should be made and implemented. Are these policy directions a reflection of the "New West" or are they, in fact, a declaration of "war on the West"? Water Organizations in a Changing West (Summer Conference, June 14-16)

Water organizations in the western United States range from small, traditional acequia associations to large metropolitan water suppliers. What do these vastly different kinds of organizations have in common? All are feeling the pressures of change in the region--growing urban populations, environmental concerns, and calls for public participation.

This year's summer program will examine how water organizations are adapting to these pressures for change. Speakers drawn from urban, agricultural, and community organizations will share their experiences …

Parks and Reserves

The plan will implement a mandatory shuttle bus system in Zion Canyon during the peak visitor use season. A transit/information center, located in a portion of the Watchman Campground, will function as the shuttle bus staging area. It will include a 575 vehicle parking and bus loading area, information center, visitor comfort facilities, amphitheater, and a picnic area. The Watchman Campground (partially displaced by the shuttle facilities) and South Campground will be rehabilitated to improve circulation and the quality of the campsites. The existing visitor center would be converted to an education center.
