Survival Of Trout Strains As Affected By Limnological Parameters, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh Dec 1988

Survival Of Trout Strains As Affected By Limnological Parameters, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Prior work at East Canyon Reservoir, Utah indicated that adult trout are important predators of stocked juvenile rainbow trout. Brown trout, in particular, were exclusively piscivorous when th~y exceeded 185 mm standard length. Fish became increasingly important in the diet of cutthroat trout greater than 330 mm. The purpose of this study was to further document the effect of adult trout on survival of juvenile rainbow trout in mid-elevation reservoirs. Causey Reservoir was chosen because it was thought to contain large brown and cutthroat trout and had not been intensively studied during the last eight years.

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1988 Annual Summary, Bruce Barber, James Whitcomb

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts annual surveys of oyster spatfall ( or "sett.ing") in Virginia waters. This survey provides an estimate of the potential of a particular area for receiving a "striken or set of oysters and helps define the timiug of setting events. In 1988 spatfall was monitored from June 6 to October 16 at a total of forty-two stations (Figure 1). · During this period shellstrings were deployed at each station (0.5m off the bottom) on a weekly basis. A shellstring consists of 12 oyster shells drilled through the center and strung on a piece …

Sperm Competition In Grey Whales, Katherine Ralls, Robert L. Brownell Jr. Nov 1988

Sperm Competition In Grey Whales, Katherine Ralls, Robert L. Brownell Jr.

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

SIR-Your legend for the drawing of grey whales taken from Cyall Watson's book Whales of the World, perpetuates the myth that a 'helper' male is necessary for successful mating in this species. The legend states that: "Only one male is involved in the actual mating; the other takes an upright position on the far side of the female, acting as a prop or wedge". This description of grey whale mating behavior. paraphrased from Watson's book, can he traced to Samaras.

Cost-Effective Fire Management For Southern California's Chaparral Wilderness: An Analytical Procedure, Chris A. Childers, Douglas D. Piirto

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Fire management has always meant fire suppression to the managers of the chaparral covered southern California National Forests. Today, Forest Service fire management programs must be cost effective, while wilderness fire management objectives are aimed at recreating natural fire regimes. A cost-effectiveness analysis has been developed to compare fire management options for meeting these objectives in California's chaparral wilderness. This paper describes the analytical procedure using examples from a study currently being conducted for the Los Padres National Forest, and discusses some preliminary results.

Thermal Decomposition Of Dichloromethane/1,1,1-Trichloroethane Mixture In An Atmosphere Of Hydrogen, Yang Soo Won Sep 1988

Thermal Decomposition Of Dichloromethane/1,1,1-Trichloroethane Mixture In An Atmosphere Of Hydrogen, Yang Soo Won

Theses

The thermal decomposition of a dichloromethane/1 , 1 , 1-trichloroethane mixture diluted in hydrogen was conducted in tubular flow reactors at 1 atmosphere total pressure. The thermal degradation of each species was analyzed systematically over temperature ranges from 475 - 810 °C, residence times of 0.05 - 2.0 seconds and three different surface to volume ratio flow reactors.

It was found that the conversions of each species in the mixture were a function of both temperature and residence time. Complete decay occurs at about 810 °C for dichloromethane and around 570 °C for 1,1,1-trichloroethane at 1 second residence time. The …

Potential Of Surface Water Contamination From Three Triazine Herbicides, William W. Witt, Kip W. Sander

KWRRI Research Reports

The movement of atrazine, cyanazine, and simazine from the site of application was monitored under conventional, reduced, and no-tillage conditions. Less water and soil was lost from the no-tillage and reduced tillage conditions. Conventional tillage conditions had about 66,000 L/ha runoff in 1986-87 and about 123,000 L/ha runoff in 1987-88. Seasonal rainfall was 885 mm in 1986-87 and 397 mm in 1987-88. The rainfall intensity was greater during the first two events in 1987 than the corresponding events in 1986. The first rainfall event in 1986 accounted for 91, 89, and 78% of the total seasonal loss of atrazine, cyanazine, …

Nonparametric Comparison Of Exponential Growth Curves, Russel S. Rickard, Richard M. Engeman, Gary O. Zerbe

USDA Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

A program to compare exponential growth curves via randomization tests has been developed for the one-way analysis-of variance situation. Exponential growth curves of the form Y = a - b exp( - gt) are first fit to each individual's longitudinal data. The parameters from each individual's curve are then input into the randomization program.

Expected Mean Squares On Ms-Dos, Richard M. Engeman, Amber D. Lusk

USDA Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

An interactive program for calculating the expected mean squares for balanced designs was developed for use on a Tektronix 4054 desktop computer (Engeman 1982). That program used BASIC string commands that did not translate well into other forms of BASIC, including that for MS-DOS machines. The program has since been rewritten to run on MS-DOS machines. Its output has also been expanded. The new version was written in BASIC on an AT&T PC 6300 and will run on most MS-DOS machines that support BASIC.

Reports

Three sets of twelve oysters from the ,James River were placed in three recirculating aquaria dosed with the radioactive tracer zinc-65. All aquaria had the same amount of river bottom sediment which was kept in suspension by the water movement caused by aeration; one aquarium had twice as much tracer as the other two. The salinity of one of the low dose aquaria and. the high dose aquarium was maintained at 18 0/00: the other low dose aquarium was maintained at 1:2 0/00. All other factors were kept constant. Sediment-water-tracer mix was added to the aquaria every 12 hours. Water …

The Effect Of Preozonation On The Anaerobic Biodegradability Of Resistant Phenolic Compounds, Yi-Tin Wang, Pin-Chieh Pai, James L. Latchew Aug 1988

The Effect Of Preozonation On The Anaerobic Biodegradability Of Resistant Phenolic Compounds, Yi-Tin Wang, Pin-Chieh Pai, James L. Latchew

KWRRI Research Reports

Ozone pretreatment studies of four model phenolic compounds were conducted to evaluate the effects of ozonation on the anaerobic biodegradability and toxicity of these compounds. Two types of batch studies, the Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) and the Anaerobic Toxicity Assay (ATA), were performed on samples ozonated upon phenol, o-cresol, 2,5-dichlorophenol, and 2,4-dinitrophenol.

Experimental results showed that toxic and refractory phenolic compounds were converted to methane gas by means of preozonation. In general, the biodegradable fraction of the oxidation products increased as the ozone dose was increased. However, ozonation to achieve at least 60% COD reduction was necessary to faciliate methane …

Bulking Control With Ozonation In A Nutrient Removal Activated Sludge System, Johannes Van Leeuwen Jul 1988

Bulking Control With Ozonation In A Nutrient Removal Activated Sludge System, Johannes Van Leeuwen

Johannes van Leeuwen

The control of sludge bulking by ozonation was studied on four parallel pilot-scale (100 l/d) biological nutrient removal systems. Bulking was caused by filamentous organisms which typically occur in nutrient removal systems, i.e. Type 0092, Tpye 0041 and Microthrix parvicella. Continuous dosing of ozone, at 1; 2 and 4g O3/kg mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS).d resulted in a diluted sludge volume index of about 50 ml/g less than the unozonated control. Ozonation was more effective in the sludge cycle than directly into the aeration basin. Nitrification-denitrification was not affected, not even at dosages of 30 g O3/kg MLSS.d. Biological phosphate …
