Sodium Accumulation In Serpentine And Non-Serpentine Populations Of The Milkweed Asclepias Fascicularis, Paul N. Thomas Jan 1981

Sodium Accumulation In Serpentine And Non-Serpentine Populations Of The Milkweed Asclepias Fascicularis, Paul N. Thomas

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Because Asclepias fascicularis is found on both serpentine and non-serpentine soils in California and because it was reported to accumulate sodium, this study was initiated to establish the degree of accumulation of this ion in these two soil types. Two other species, Asclepias speciosa Torr. and Asclepias cordifolia (Benth.) Jeps. were included to determine if this characteristic of accumulation occurs in other members of this genus.

S-Adenosyl- L-Methionine And S-Adenosyl- L-Homocysteine: A Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Study And Purification Of S-Adenosyl- L-Methionine: L-Homocysteine S-Methyltransferase From Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Mark Lewis Stolowitz Jan 1981

S-Adenosyl- L-Methionine And S-Adenosyl- L-Homocysteine: A Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Study And Purification Of S-Adenosyl- L-Methionine: L-Homocysteine S-Methyltransferase From Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Mark Lewis Stolowitz

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

An analysis of the 360 MHz ('1)H NMR spectra of the title compounds in ('2)H(,2O) is presented. The ('3)J values for the ribose vicinal protons of S-adenosyl-L-methionine are consistent with a predominantly C(,3')-exo conformation and with one highly favored gauche-anti conformation about the C(,4')-C(,5') bond. The corresponding ('3)J values for S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine imply a similar C(,3')-exo ribose ring conformation, but the orientation about the C(,4')-C(,5') bond is distributed between two gauche-anti rotamers. The methionine side chain of S-adenosyl-L-methionine has approximately equal populations of rotational isomers about the C(,(alpha))-C(,(beta)) and C(,(beta))-C(,(gamma)) bonds, whereas the side chain of S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine exhibits a conformational preference …

A Matrix Isolation Study Of The Reactions Of Oxygen(Singlet-D) With The Chlorofluoromethanes Fluorotrichloromethane, Dichlorodifluoromethane And Chlorotrifluoromethane, Richard Thomason Burke Jan 1981

A Matrix Isolation Study Of The Reactions Of Oxygen(Singlet-D) With The Chlorofluoromethanes Fluorotrichloromethane, Dichlorodifluoromethane And Chlorotrifluoromethane, Richard Thomason Burke

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

We have studied the reactions of O(1D) with CC13F, CC12F2 and CC1F3 in CO2, SF6 and N2O matrices, and in neat mixtures. Photolysis of cryogenic mixtures of ozone and the chlorofluoromethanes in various matrix hosts resulted in production of O(1D) which migrated through the matrix to react with the Freon molecules. Products were detected by infrared spectroscopy of the matrix deposits, with assignments confirmed by comparison of 16O and 18O absorption bands with literature values. Evidence for oxygen atom insertion into a C-C1 …

Protective Effects Of Certain Lythraceae Alkaloids And Homologs In Croton Oil- And Carrageenan-Induced Inflammation, John Alan Byrne Jan 1981

Protective Effects Of Certain Lythraceae Alkaloids And Homologs In Croton Oil- And Carrageenan-Induced Inflammation, John Alan Byrne

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Cryogenine's immunosuppressive activity was first evaluated by Kosersky, et al. (21) who, impressed by the drug's ability to inhibit both the irritant- and immune- mediated phases of adjuvant-induced polyarthritis (11), quantitatively confirmed this activity and clearly differentiated the action of cryogenine from that displayed by 6-mercaptopurine. A definitive study by Watson and Malone (22) confirmed cryogenine's lack of immunosuppressive capacity at effective anti-inflammatory dose levels.

The molecular complexity of the lythraceae alkaloids suggests that several active centers may account for their unique pharmacological profile. To assess these potentially active sites, two standard models of acute inflammation were selected for use …

Synchronized Slide-Tapes In The Physics Laboratory, Loren Quan Jan 1981

Synchronized Slide-Tapes In The Physics Laboratory, Loren Quan

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Media play a large part in most of our daily lives. We watch television; we go to the movies; we listen to the radio. For years educators have been adapting media-related technological advancements for the purpose of teaching in the classroom. Here at the Physics Department of the University of the Pacific, we have adapted the medium of synchronized slide-tapes for use in the laboratory component of our calculus-based introductory physics course.

Differentiation Of Dopamine Receptor Types In The Central Nervous System Of The Rat, Ihor Krewsun Jan 1981

Differentiation Of Dopamine Receptor Types In The Central Nervous System Of The Rat, Ihor Krewsun

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

There is considerable evidence to suggest that dopamine (DA), in addition to its role as a precursor of norepinephrine (NE) and ephinephrine, has important physiological actions in its own right. One physiological action of DA seems to be that of a neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain (Hornykiewicz, 1966). In addition, there is evidence that abnormalities of dopaminergic transmission in the central nervous system (CNS) may be of clinical importance. For example, dopaminergic over activity in the mesolimbic forebrain may be a primary feature in the etiology of schizophrenia (Meltzer and Stahl, 1976).

The drugs used to treat schizophrenia act as …
