Online Detection Of Outliers And Structural Breaks Using Sequential Monte Carlo Methods, Richard Wanjohi Dec 2014

Online Detection Of Outliers And Structural Breaks Using Sequential Monte Carlo Methods, Richard Wanjohi

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Outliers and structural breaks occur quite frequently in time series data. Whereas outliers often contain valuable information

about the process under study, they are known to have serious negative impact on statistical data analysis. Most obvious effect is model misspecification and biased parameter estimation which results in wrong conclusions and inaccurate predictions. Structural time series consist of underlying features such as level, slope, cycles or seasonal components. Structural breaks are permanent disruptions of one or more of these components and might be a signal of serious changes in the observed process.

Detecting outliers and estimating the location of structural breaks …

Dropwise Condensation Dynamics In Humid Air, Julian Eduardo Castillo Chaco Oct 2014

Dropwise Condensation Dynamics In Humid Air, Julian Eduardo Castillo Chaco

Open Access Theses

Dropwise condensation of atmospheric water vapor is important in multiple practical engineering applications. The roles of environmental factors and surface morphology/chemistry on the condensation dynamics need to be better understood to enable efficient water-harvesting, dehumidication, and other psychrometric processes. Systems and surfaces that promote faster condensation rates and self-shedding of condensate droplets could lead to improved mass transfer rates and higher water yields in harvesting applications. The thesis presents the design and construction of an experimental facility that allows visualization of the condensation process as a function of relative humidity. Dropwise condensation experiments are performed on a vertically oriented, hydrophobic …

New Strategies To Reveal Protein Candidates In Protein-Protein Interactome Study, Meng-Chieh Chen Oct 2014

New Strategies To Reveal Protein Candidates In Protein-Protein Interactome Study, Meng-Chieh Chen

Open Access Theses

Comprehensive protein-protein interaction network analysis can help reveal protein functions in a system-wide manner. A reliable knowledgebase of interaction networks is not only important for selecting the candidates for drug therapies, but also for evaluating the disease risk. In current interaction databases, 322579 interactions comprised of 56460 proteins have been reported (statistical analysis from APID: Agile Protein Interaction DataAnalyzer; http://bioinfow.dep.usal.es/apid/index.htm). The huge datasets are contributed mainly by yeast -two -hybrid (Y2H) screening and affinity-purification followed by mass spectrometry (AP-MS). High false positive rates and failing to cover certain interaction categories are the limitations of these two methods. Here, we developed …

High-Purity Gallium Analysis By Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, Kyungjean Min Oct 2014

High-Purity Gallium Analysis By Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, Kyungjean Min

Open Access Theses

The mobility of Two-dimensional Electron Gas in AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructures that are grown in the Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) can be increased by purification of the gallium used to grow the films. To attain 200 million cm2/Vs mobility, the impurity concentration of gallium should be reduced to below 1 ppb. The commercial 7N (99.99999%) gallium with 100 ppb total impurity is currently used in the MBE at Purdue University and is being purified by zone refining. To evaluate the commercial 7N gallium and establish the methodology for the impurity measurement after zone refining, germanium, iron, and zinc in 6N and 7N …

Elucidating The Mechanism Of Phenylpropanoid Regulation By The Arabidopsis Mediator Complex, Wenjie Zeng Oct 2014

Elucidating The Mechanism Of Phenylpropanoid Regulation By The Arabidopsis Mediator Complex, Wenjie Zeng

Open Access Theses

The Mediator complex is a multi-protein co-regulator of eukaryotic transcription which plays a role in the expression of many, if not most, genes of the cell. Two Mediator subunits, REF4 and RFR1, were demonstrated to be important for the normal regulation of phenylpropanoid metabolism in Arabidopsis. Phenylpropanoids are a family of specialized plant metabolites derived from the amino acid phenylalanine and are involved in defense against pathogens, UV protection and structural support. In order to understand how Mediator regulates phenylpropanoid metabolism through REF4 and RFR1, a better basic understanding of this protein complex is required. Here I provide data on …

Reverse-Phase Liquid Chromatography Of Small Molecules Using Silica Colloidal Crystals, Natalya Khanina Oct 2014

Reverse-Phase Liquid Chromatography Of Small Molecules Using Silica Colloidal Crystals, Natalya Khanina

Open Access Theses

Capillaries packed with a silica colloidal crystal (SCC) of 470 nm nonporous particles have recently been shown to offer significant improvements in the peak width, resolution, and speed of protein analysis due to the reduction of the A and C term broadening contributions of the Van Deemter equation. While protein separations using this technology have shown vast improvements, small molecules remain largely unexplored. As the SCC allows for an approximately diffusion limited system, extremely high plate numbers are expected for small molecule separations. The research presented herein studies the feasibility of pressure-driven small molecule separation using SCCs and commercial instrumentation. …

Propogation Of Wind Turbine Noise Through Wakes And Turbulent Atmosphere, Yuan Peng Oct 2014

Propogation Of Wind Turbine Noise Through Wakes And Turbulent Atmosphere, Yuan Peng

Open Access Theses

It is well known that the atmospheric inhomogeneities have great impact on sound propagation over long ranges. For the application of predicting wind turbine noise, either the flow wakes generated by rotating turbine blades or small-scale atmospheric turbulence can affect the propagation of sound over ground surfaces from individual turbines.

In this thesis, the effects of wake and atmospheric turbulence on the propagation of wind turbine noise are investigated. By introducing the Parabolic Equation (PE) method, the effects of atmospheric changes in sound speed can be incorporated at each marching step as the prediction of sound field advances in the …

Identifying Conditions To Optimize Lactic Acid Production From Food Waste, Raymond M. Redcorn Oct 2014

Identifying Conditions To Optimize Lactic Acid Production From Food Waste, Raymond M. Redcorn

Open Access Theses

There is an increased demand for lactic acid for the production of biopolymers and to aid nutrient removal in wastewater treatment. Food waste offers a source of soluble sugars to produce lactic acid, which does not increase land demand, but digestion conditions have yet to be optimized when co-digested with primary sludge. Food waste was collected from cafeteria waste bins, homogenized and seeded with primary sludge. A Box Behnken Response surface design was used to optimize lactic acid production based on pH, temperature, loading rate, and retention time. Subsequent experiments verified and refined those conditions to optimize for both yield …

Second Quantum State Transition In Gaas/Algaas Resonant Bragg Structure Probed By Modulation Reflectance Spectroscopy, Yuechao Chen Oct 2014

Second Quantum State Transition In Gaas/Algaas Resonant Bragg Structure Probed By Modulation Reflectance Spectroscopy, Yuechao Chen

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Modulation spectroscopy, ever since its introduction by B.O. Seraphin in 1964, has been considered and widely used as a sensitive experiment technique for studying and characterizing the properties of varieties of semiconductor materials. Compared to general optical reflectance spectrum which measures the absolute reflection, the modulation spectroscopy evaluates the interpretation of the changes in the optical response from the sample caused by a periodic physical perturbation applied to the sample, such as temperature, electric fields, hydrostatic pressure, uniaxial stress, etc. Those modulation spectroscopies with an external electric field perturbation are known as electroreflectance spectroscopy, which provides sharp and derivative-like spectral features …

Resonant Two-Photon Ionization Studies Of Non Covalent Interactions In Halo Aromatic Clusters And Spin-Orbit Coupling Modeling In Mono-Halocarbenes, Silver Nyambo Oct 2014

Resonant Two-Photon Ionization Studies Of Non Covalent Interactions In Halo Aromatic Clusters And Spin-Orbit Coupling Modeling In Mono-Halocarbenes, Silver Nyambo

Dissertations (1934 -)

Non-covalent interactions in halobenzenes (PhX) (X=F, Cl, Br) and phenylamine (C6 H5 NH2 ) have been studied here using resonance two-photon ionization (R2PI) spectroscopy combined with a linear TOF-mass spectrometer. Their interaction with polar molecules in form of ammonia (NH 3 ) and trifluorohalomethanes (CF3 X) has also been studied. DFT and TD-DFT calculations using M06-2X functionals were carried out on different cluster conformations to compliment experimental results. A general trend of broadness in homogenous dimers (PhX)2 , has been attributed to mainly the presence of multiple cluster isomers and Frank-Condon activity in the low …

Optimization problem has always been considered as a central topic in various areas of science and engineering. It aims at finding the configuration of a large number of variables with which the objective function is optimal. The close relation between optimization problems and statistical physics through the probability measure of the Boltzmann type has brought new theoretical tools from statistical physics of disordered systems to optimization problems. In this thesis, we use message passing techniques, in particular cavity method, developed in the last decades within spin glass theory to study optimization problems in complex systems. In the study of force …

An Empirical Study Of Some Branching Processes With Upper Barrier, Alejandro Aguilar Aug 2014

An Empirical Study Of Some Branching Processes With Upper Barrier, Alejandro Aguilar

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

We consider discrete time branching processes with a reflecting upper barrier. The processes differ in their offspring distributions being either binary splitting or binomial one. Two important factors for the behavior of the processes characteristics are studied as follows: time to extinction and total progeny up to the n th generation. More specifically, we investigate the distribution and expected value of the time to extinction as well as the probability mass functions of the total progeny. The tools used are basic results for a finite state Markov chain.

Dynamics For The Compound Burgers-Kdv Equation, Xiangqian Zheng Aug 2014

Dynamics For The Compound Burgers-Kdv Equation, Xiangqian Zheng

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

In this thesis, we study the Two-Dimensional Burgers-Korteweg-de Vries (2D-BKdV) equation and Two-Dimensional Compound Burgers-Korteweg-de Vries (2D-Compound BKdV) by analyzing the first integral equation, which indicates that under some particular conditions, the 2D-BKdV equation and 2D-Compound BKdV have exact traveling wave solutions. By using the elliptic integral and some transformations, traveling wave solution to the 2D-BKdV equation and 2DCompound BKdV are expressed explicitly.

Prediction Of Time-To-Graduation For Stem Hispanic Undergraduate Students, Gejun Zhu Aug 2014

Prediction Of Time-To-Graduation For Stem Hispanic Undergraduate Students, Gejun Zhu

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

In this thesis, we study the time-to-graduation problem for STEM Hispanic undergraduate students. The response, time-to-graduation, was treated in two different ways: as a binary variable with graduated (by the 6th year) and not-graduated values, and as an ordinal variable with values year-4, year-5, year-6, and not-graduate. Mathematics education plays critical role in students’ timely graduation, especially for STEM students. We used students records data obtained from The University of Texas-Pan American to illustrate how mathematics background factors (including SAT math score, ACT math score, TASP math score) and mathematics performance variables (including mathematics GPA, number of dropped mathematics courses, …

Balanced Modular Parameterizations, Esteban J. Melendez Aug 2014

Balanced Modular Parameterizations, Esteban J. Melendez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

In this thesis, we show that Classical representations for certain modular forms have symmetric form. These symmetric formulations are interpreted in terms of more general balanced homogeneous polynomial representations resulting from a permutative action of Hecke congruence subgroups on quotients of theta functions. For prime levels between 5 and 19, sets of permuted theta quotients are constructed that generate the corresponding vector spaces of modular forms of weight one.

Gas-Phase Ion/Ion Reactions Of Biomolecules: An Examination Of Carboxylate Reactivity And Arginine Based Non-Covalent Complexes, Nathan Zachary Barefoot

Open Access Theses

The advent of Electrospray Ionization with the ability to generate multiply charges ions has contributed significantly to the study of gas-phase ion/ion reactions. With the tools available in mass spectrometry it has been shown that these reactions are effective at transforming one type of gaseous ion into another through a series of reactions. This work examines some of these reactions and their application to field of proteomics specifically focusing on the amino acids of arginine and lysine. NHS reagents have been shown to react to both of these molecules with in the gas-phase under different conditions but have relies on …

Correlating Molecular Architecture Of A Radical Polymer Based Copolymer With Its Electrical Transport Properties, Holly Chan Jul 2014

Correlating Molecular Architecture Of A Radical Polymer Based Copolymer With Its Electrical Transport Properties, Holly Chan

Open Access Theses

The design and synthesis of electrically-conductive macromolecules can lead to significant improvements in the performance of polymer-based energy conversion devices (e.g., thermoelectric devices). For these organic electronic devices, conjugated polymers have dominated the area of conductive polymers; however, these materials are usually synthesized using conditions that lead to poorly-defined polymers. Furthermore, in these increasingly-standard polymers, the charge transport ability of the polymer thin films is largely affected by the degree of crystallinity, which is a difficult property to control in a reproducible fashion. Therefore, we seek to explore a new class of amorphous, non-conjugated polymers containing a stable radical …

Separation Of On-Column Labeled Model Proteins With Packed Capillary Electrophoresis, Yingxu Hao Jul 2014

Separation Of On-Column Labeled Model Proteins With Packed Capillary Electrophoresis, Yingxu Hao

Open Access Theses

Protein drugs are increasingly developed in the pharmaceutical company. Under the regulation of FDA, high purity of therapeutic proteins needs to be maintained. Before putting those drugs in the market, fast and efficient method is in need to achieve homogeneity. Traditionally, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE), capillary electrophoresis (CE), and size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) are used for the purification process. These methods have the disadvantages of low time and cost efficiency, and this quality assurance process has become the bottleneck of production. In our group, sub-micron silica colloidal particles with polyacrylamide layer on the surface are packed inside capillaries to increase the …

Optical Position Sensing In Free Space Optical Communication, Muhammad Salman Bashir Jul 2014

Optical Position Sensing In Free Space Optical Communication, Muhammad Salman Bashir

Open Access Theses

In this thesis the performance of three estimators, (center of gravity, template matching and maximum likelihood (MLE)) to estimate the center of the beam on a photoemissive receiver array in a Free Space Optics (FSO) system, is compared in terms of mean square error. Simulations have been conducted in Matlab by generating a two dimensional nonhomogeneous Poisson process, and, mean square error is computed for three estimators. The cases of continuous and discrete arrays are also considered for various levels of signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio. Simulations have shown that the MLE gives the least mean squared error and especially performs significantly …

Radar Image Processing And Its Applications Based On Convolution Back Projection, Qitong Li

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

A general synthetic aperture radar (SAR) signal model is derived from the Maxwell’s equations, and a SAR image processing algorithm called Convolution Back Projection (CBP) will be introduced in this thesis, which can be applied to data gathered by a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) system to produce high resolution images. The purpose of this thesis is starting from Maxwell’s equations to study the CBP algorithm as it is applied to SAR image processing. Two different image simulation results will be provided by this method.

Using The Differential Fay Identities For Ribbon Graph Enumeration, Indalecio Soto Jr. Jul 2014

Using The Differential Fay Identities For Ribbon Graph Enumeration, Indalecio Soto Jr.

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

In this paper we are exploiting connections between the Differential Fay Identities and the partition function of Gaussian Unitary Random Matrices. The partition function has a asymptotic expression whose terms give the generating function for the enumeration of ribbon graphs partitioned by genus. These ribbon graphs (k; j), of k vertices of degree j have an orientation in genus g where the edges are represented as ribbons. Furthermore, we will develop connections between the Differential Fay Identities and introduce several theorems between the hierarchies of the identities. Lastly, we will briefly explore the first Differential Fay Identity that contains the …

The Born Approximation, Multiple Scattering, And The Butterfly Algorithm, Alejandro F. Martinez Jul 2014

The Born Approximation, Multiple Scattering, And The Butterfly Algorithm, Alejandro F. Martinez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Radar works by focusing a beam of light and seeing how long it takes to reflect. To see a large region the beam is pointed in different directions. The focus of the beam depends on the size of the antenna (called an aperture). Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) works by moving the antenna through some region of space. A fundamental assumption in SAR is that waves only bounce once. Several imaging algorithms have been designed using that assumption. The scattering process can be described by iterations of a badly behaving integral. Recently a method for efficiently evaluating these types of integrals …

The Generation Model Of Internal Waves In A Forced Rotation-Modified Ocean, Daqi Xin Jul 2014

The Generation Model Of Internal Waves In A Forced Rotation-Modified Ocean, Daqi Xin

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

A two-layer model which contains the forcing term due to the barotropic tides which flow over a comparatively large bottom topography in the ocean was derived previously. The model can be used to describe the generation of nonlinear dispersive internal tides and the following disintegration into internal waves. We studied the influence of Coriolis effect. A numerical simulation shows that the Earth’s rotation affects the generation of the internal waves since it hampers the disintegration of internal tides into internal waves.

Asymptotic Invariants And Flatness Of Local Endomorphisms, Nikita Miasnikov Jun 2014

Asymptotic Invariants And Flatness Of Local Endomorphisms, Nikita Miasnikov

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

For a local endomorphism of a noetherian local ring we introduce 3 asymptotic invariants one of which we call entropy. We use this notion of entropy to extend numerical conditions in Kunz' regularity criterion to every contracting endomorphism of a noetherian local ring, and to give a characteristic-free interpretation of the definition of Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity. We also show that every finite endomorphism of a complete noetherian local ring of equal characteristic can be lifted to a finite endomorphism of a complete regular local ring. The local ring of an algebraic or analytic variety at a point fixed by a finite …

Properties Of Multiferroic Bifeo3 From First Principles, Dovran Rahmedov May 2014

Properties Of Multiferroic Bifeo3 From First Principles, Dovran Rahmedov

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, a first-principle-based approach is developed to study magnetoelectric effect in multiferoic materials. Such approach has a significant predictive power and might serve as a guide to new experimental works. As we will discuss in the course of this work, it also gives an important insight to the underlying physics behind the experimentally observed phenomena.

We start by applying our method to investigate properties of a generic multiferroic material. We observe how magnetic susceptibility of such materials evolves with temperature and compare this evolution with the characteristic behavior of magnetic susceptibility for pure magnetic systems. Then we focus …

The Szego Kernel Of Certain Polynomial Models, And Heat Kernel Estimates For Schrodinger Operators With Reverse Holder Potentials, Michael Tinker May 2014

The Szego Kernel Of Certain Polynomial Models, And Heat Kernel Estimates For Schrodinger Operators With Reverse Holder Potentials, Michael Tinker

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

We present two different results on operator kernels, each in the context of its relationship to a class of CR manifolds M={z,w1,...wn) element of Cn⁺¹ : Im wifi(Re z)} where n d 2 and (phi)i( x) is subharmonic for i = 1,...,n. Such models have proven useful for studying canonical operators such as the Szegö projection on weakly pseudoconvex domains of finite type in C², and may play a similar role in work on higher codimension CR manifolds in C³. Our study in Part II concerns the Szegö kernel on M for which the (empty set)i are subharmonic nonharmonic polynomials. …

Reconstructions At The Interface In Complex Oxide Heterostructures With Strongly Correlated Electrons, Benjamin Gray May 2014

Reconstructions At The Interface In Complex Oxide Heterostructures With Strongly Correlated Electrons, Benjamin Gray

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Strongly correlated oxides exhibit a rich spectrum of closely competing orders near the localized-itinerant Mott insulator transition leaving their ground states ripe with instabilities susceptible to small perturbations such as lattice distortions, variation in stoichiometry, magnetic and electric fields, etc. As the field of interfacial engineering has matured, these underlying instabilities in the electronic structure of correlated oxides continue to be leveraged to manipulate existing phases or search for emergent ones. The central theme is matching materials across the interface with disparate physical, chemical, electronic, or magnetic structure to harness interfacial reconstructions in the strongly coupled charge, spin, orbital, and …

Poisson Distributed Individuals Control Charts With Optimal Limits, Negin Enayaty Ahangar May 2014

Poisson Distributed Individuals Control Charts With Optimal Limits, Negin Enayaty Ahangar

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The conventional method used in attribute control charts is the Shewhart three sigma limits. The implicit assumption of the Normal distribution in this approach is not appropriate for skewed distributions such as Poisson, Geometric and Negative Binomial. Normal approximations perform poorly in the tail area of the these distributions. In this research, a type of attribute control chart is introduced to monitor the processes that provide count data. The economic objective of this chart is to minimize the cost of its errors which is determined by the designer. This objective is a linear function of type I and II errors. …
