Improved Accuracy For Fluid Flow Problems Via Enhanced Physics, Michael Case

This thesis is an investigation of numerical methods for approximating solutions to fluid flow problems, specifically the Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) and magnetohydrodynamic equations (MHD), with an overriding theme of enforcing more physical behavior in discrete solutions. It is well documented that numerical methods with more physical accuracy exhibit better long-time behavior than comparable methods that enforce less physics in their solutions. This work develops, analyzes and tests finite element methods that better enforce mass conservation in discrete velocity solutions to the NSE and MHD, helicity conservation for NSE, cross-helicity conservation in MHD, and magnetic field incompressibility in MHD.

Results Of New Petrologic And Remote Sensing Studies In The Big Bend Region, Stevan Christian Benker

The initial section of this manuscript involves the South Rim Formation, a series of 32.2-32 Ma comenditic quartz trachytic-rhyolitic volcanics and associated intrusives, erupted and was emplaced in Big Bend National Park, Texas. Magmatic parameters have only been interpreted for one of the two diverse petrogenetic suites comprising this formation. Here, new mineralogic data for the South Rim Formation rocks are presented. Magmatic parameters interpreted from these data assist in deciphering lithospheric characteristics during the mid-Tertiary.

Results indicate low temperatures (< 750 °C), reduced conditions (generally below the FMQ buffer), and low pressures (≤ 100 MPa) associated with South Rim Formation magmatism with slight conditional differences between the two suites. Newly discovered fayalite microphenocrysts allowed determination of oxygen fugacity values (between -0.14 and -0.25 ΔFMQ over temperature ranges of 680-700 °C), via mineral equilibria based QUILF95 calculations, for Emory Peak Suite.

Increasing the accuracy of predictions made from ecological data typically involves replacing or replicating the data, but the cost of updating large-scale data sets can be prohibitive. Focusing resources on a small sample of locations from a large, less accurate data set can result in more reliable observations, though on a smaller scale. We present an approach for increasing the accuracy of predictions made from a large-scale eco logical data set through reconciliation with a small, highly accurate data set within a Bayesian hierarchical modeling framework. Actigraphy is an increasingly popular approach in medicine to assess patient activity levels in a variety of scenarios. The devices are essentially accelerometers encased in a write-watch type assembly. This project sought to determine the device precision and accuracy for the Actical model. In a sample of four Acticals, it was found that intra-device variability was minimal. However, one device was found to be statistically biased in comparison to the other three. This bias could have adverse effects on aggregated or magnitude dependent data analysis. Also, inter-device comparisons may be problematic.
