Kinematics Of The Narrow-Line Regions In The Seyfert Galaxies Ngc 4151 And Ngc 1068, Varendra Das Aug 2006

Kinematics Of The Narrow-Line Regions In The Seyfert Galaxies Ngc 4151 And Ngc 1068, Varendra Das

Physics and Astronomy Dissertations

We present a study of high-resolution long-slit spectra of the Narrow-Line Regions (NLRs) of NGC 4151 (a Seyfert 1 galaxy) and NGC 1068 (a Seyfert 2 galaxy) obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The spectra were retrieved from the Multimission Archive at Space Telescope (MAST) and were obtained from five and seven orbits of HST time resulting in five and seven parallel slit configurations at position angles of 52 degrees and 38 degrees for NGC 4151 and NGC 1068 respectively. The spectra have a spatial resolution of 0.2 arcsecond across and 0.1 …

Dynamics Of Nonlinear Diffusion Processes, Dustin A. Sipka Apr 2006

Dynamics Of Nonlinear Diffusion Processes, Dustin A. Sipka

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze nonlinear diffusion processes. In particular, some of the results arrived at by Newman and Sagan in their 1981 paper "Galactic Civilizations: Population Dynamics and Interstellar Diffusion," will be reproduced by different means. First, a thorough analysis of the linear diffusion equation will be performed in order to test a numerical algorithm that can solve the nonlinear diffusion equation and look at the processes of interest with sufficient accuracy. Once the algorithm is tested and shows good resolution it is used to solve the nonlinear equation. The post processing is then done to …

Mobius: An Omnidirectional Robotic Platform And Software Architecture For Network Teleoperation, Samuel Aaron Miller Apr 2006

Mobius: An Omnidirectional Robotic Platform And Software Architecture For Network Teleoperation, Samuel Aaron Miller

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The following thesis presents the results of a project to develop and test an omnidirectional robotic system (hardware and software) at NASA Langley Research Center's Robotics and Intelligent Machines Lab. The impetus for the project was the unique capabilities of omnidirectional systems. Some of the many potential benefits these systems have include improved material-handling capabilities in constrained environments (such as might be found in extraterrestrial manned habitats), efficient camera-based vehicle teleoperation, and simplified route planning for autonomous robot operations.

The project's focus was to design, build, and test a system that used Mecanum wheels to achieve omnidirectional motion. In addition …

Nonlinear Dynamics Derived From The Oxyhalogen Oxidation Of Selected Organosulfur Compounds, Edward Chickwana Mar 2006

Nonlinear Dynamics Derived From The Oxyhalogen Oxidation Of Selected Organosulfur Compounds, Edward Chickwana

Dissertations and Theses

Structure, stability, kinetics and mechanisms of oxidation of some physiologically important organosulfur compounds were studied and the results obtained show that oxidation occurs mainly at the reactive sulfur center of the molecules. These results not only display the usual S-oxygenation pathways that have been observed with most thiocarbamides, but also show dimerization and cyclization.

The oxidation of guanylthiourea, GTU, was studied in the presence of mildly acidic iodate and the strong oxidants bromate and bromine. The GTU reaction dynamics with iodate show clock reaction characteristics and oligooscillatory formation of iodine both in excess oxidant and reductant. The major oxidation product …
