Complexity Of Devonian K-Bentonites In The Appalachian Foreland Basin: Geochemical And Physical Evidence Supporting Multi-Layered K-Bentonite Horizons, Lucas Benedict

Detailed analysis of Lower to Middle Devonian K-bentonites in the Appalachian Basin reveals physical and geochemical characteristics within supposed single eruptive event deposits that indicate a more complex depositional history is recorded in many of these volcanic beds. Variations in bedding showing multiple coarse and fine-grained layers within a K-bentonite layer can be seen in some Devonian K-bentonite beds. Microscopic irregularities show variations in the orientation of volcanic grains, and subtle phenocryst layers within a K-bentonite suggest changes in depositional environment where changing water and wave regimes rework and redeposit material on the sea floor. The present study focuses on East Pond, the head of the lake-chain system. East Pond is roughly oval in shape with several coves along the margins; it has an average 3 depth of 4.5 m, a maximum depth of 7.3 m, and a total volume of 26.35 x 10 6 m . The lake is surrounded by North temperate hardwood forest and a marshy outlet to the other lakes exists in the northwest comer. Seismic Stratigraphic Investigation Of The Ukpokiti Field Channel Complex, Oml 108, Offshore Nigeria, Northwestern Niger Delta, Toby Latwan Stewart

Detailed seismic stratigraphic analyses and mapping show that a well defined Ukpokiti Field Channel complex (late Miocene) found on the up-thrown side of a major back-to-back fault system in the West Niger delta inner-continental shelf probably formed during a single eustatic fall. The channel (>500 msec, 10 km wide) shows several tributaries entering the trunk axis from what was probably a surface of subaerial exposure. Slumping is prominent on the north flank of the trunk channel. No channel unconformity is evident in the down-thrown block.
