Issues like inequity, deprivation and poverty have been a focus of interest for social scientists for a long time. The present thesis explores a few aspects of the above issues. It ermbodies the fruit of my intellectual perambulation in the Economic Research Unit of Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) during the years 1995 - 97. The text is divided into six chapters.
