A New Method To Determine The Posterior Distribution Of Coefficient Alpha, John Mart V. Delosreyes Oct 2023

A New Method To Determine The Posterior Distribution Of Coefficient Alpha, John Mart V. Delosreyes

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

There is a focus within the behavioral/social sciences on non-physical, psychological constructs (i.e., constructs). These constructs are indirectly measured using measurement instruments that consist of questions that capture the manifestations of these constructs. The indirect nature of measuring constructs results in a need of ensuring that measurement instruments are reliable. The most popular statistic used to estimate reliability is coefficient alpha as it is easy to compute and has properties that make it desirable to use. Coefficient alpha’s popularity has resulted in a wide breadth of research into its qualities. Notably, research about coefficient alpha’s distribution has led to developments …

Spatio-Temporal Cluster Detection And Local Moran Statistics Of Point Processes, Jennifer L. Matthews Apr 2019

Spatio-Temporal Cluster Detection And Local Moran Statistics Of Point Processes, Jennifer L. Matthews

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Moran's index is a statistic that measures spatial dependence, quantifying the degree of dispersion or clustering of point processes and events in some location/area. Recognizing that a single Moran's index may not give a sufficient summary of the spatial autocorrelation measure, a local indicator of spatial association (LISA) has gained popularity. Accordingly, we propose extending LISAs to time after partitioning the area and computing a Moran-type statistic for each subarea. Patterns between the local neighbors are unveiled that would not otherwise be apparent. We consider the measures of Moran statistics while incorporating a time factor under simulated multilevel Palm distribution, …

Multi-Gpu Accelerated High-Fidelity Simulations Of Beam-Beam Effects In Particle Colliders, Naga Sai Ravi Teja Majeti Jul 2017

Multi-Gpu Accelerated High-Fidelity Simulations Of Beam-Beam Effects In Particle Colliders, Naga Sai Ravi Teja Majeti

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Numerical simulation of beam-beam effects in particle colliders are crucial in understanding and the design of future machines such as electron-ion colliders (JLEIC), linac-ring machines (eRHIC) or LHeC. These simulations model the non-linear collision dynamics of two counter rotating beams in particle colliders for millions of turns. In particular, at each turn, the algorithm simulates the collision of two directed beams propagating at different speeds with different number of bunches each. This leads to non-pair-wise collisions of beams with different number of bunches that results in an increase in the computational load proportional to the number of bunches in the …

A Predictor Analysis Framework For Surface Radiation Budget Reprocessing Using Design Of Experiments, Patricia Allison Quigley Apr 2017

A Predictor Analysis Framework For Surface Radiation Budget Reprocessing Using Design Of Experiments, Patricia Allison Quigley

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Earth’s Radiation Budget (ERB) is an accounting of all incoming energy from the sun and outgoing energy reflected and radiated to space by earth’s surface and atmosphere. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)/Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) Surface Radiation Budget (SRB) project produces and archives long-term datasets representative of this energy exchange system on a global scale. The data are comprised of the longwave and shortwave radiative components of the system and is algorithmically derived from satellite and atmospheric assimilation products, and acquired atmospheric data. It is stored as 3-hourly, daily, monthly/3-hourly, and monthly averages of 1°x1° …

A Simulation-Based Layered Framework Framework For The Development Of Collaborative Autonomous Systems, Ioannis Sakiotis Jul 2016

A Simulation-Based Layered Framework Framework For The Development Of Collaborative Autonomous Systems, Ioannis Sakiotis

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to introduce a simulation-based software framework that facilitates the development of collaborative autonomous systems. Significant commonalities exist in the design approaches of both collaborative and autonomous systems, mirroring the sense, plan, act paradigm, and mostly adopting layered architectures. Unfortunately, the development of such systems is intricate and requires low-level interfacing which significantly detracts from development time. Frameworks for the development of collaborative and autonomous systems have been developed but are not flexible and center on narrow ranges of applications and platforms. The proposed framework utilizes an expandable layered structure that allows developers to define …

Toward A Theory Of Multi-Method Modeling And Simulation Approach, Mariusz A. Balaban Apr 2015

Toward A Theory Of Multi-Method Modeling And Simulation Approach, Mariusz A. Balaban

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The representation via simulation models can easily lead to simulation models too simple for their intended purpose, or with too much detail, making them hard to understand. This problem is related to limitations of the modeling and simulation methods. A multi-method Modeling and Simulation (M&S) approach has the potential for improved representation by taking advantage of methods' strengths and mitigating their weaknesses. Despite a high appeal for using multiple M&S methods, several related problems should be addressed first. The current level of theoretical, methodological, and pragmatic knowledge related to a multi-method M&S approach is limited. It is problematic that there …

A Method For Introducing Artificial Perception (Ap) To Improve Human Behavior Representation (Hbr) Using Agents In Synthetic Environments, Randall Bartholomew Garrett Apr 2009

A Method For Introducing Artificial Perception (Ap) To Improve Human Behavior Representation (Hbr) Using Agents In Synthetic Environments, Randall Bartholomew Garrett

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

While psychology has shown that perception is very important for the human decision process, agent perception has not been covered in sufficient detail within the agent directed simulation field. To contribute to such a solution, an open challenge lies in capturing the knowledge of human sciences, such as psychology, and making this knowledge usable for engineers. This dissertation addresses perception by describing an experimental method where agent perception simulates human perception. In particular, it presents engineering methods based on accepted psychological approaches resulting in a proof of concept. To prove the feasibility, an Artificial Perception (AP) meta-model is presented using …

Using Agile Software Development Practices In A Research Oriented Distributed Simulation, Douglas James Mielke Jul 2008

Using Agile Software Development Practices In A Research Oriented Distributed Simulation, Douglas James Mielke

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Although sometimes controversial, agile methodologies have proven to be a viable choice for some software development projects. Projects suited to agile methodologies are those that involve new technology, have requirements that change rapidly, and are controlled by small, talented teams. Much literature about agile software development leans towards business products and non-government entities. Only a handful of literature resources mention agile software development being used in government contracts and even fewer resources mention research projects. NASA's Airspace and Traffic Operations Simulation (ATOS) is a research oriented simulation that doesn't follow the traditional business project mold. In an effort to gain …

Numerical Model Simulation Of Offshore Flow During The Winter Season, Maria Cintia Piccolo Jan 1981

Numerical Model Simulation Of Offshore Flow During The Winter Season, Maria Cintia Piccolo

OES Theses and Dissertations

Because of the step function variability of heat and moisture flux in coastal zones, adequate descriptive models of mesoscale coastal circulation and weather patterns demand high spatial resolution in the analysis of wind, temperature and moisture patterns. To obtain realistic concepts of offshore flow the sparse offshore data networks need to be supplemented by mesoscale numerical models. The problems associated with the modeling of offshore flow across the east coast of the United States during the winter season have been investigated with a simple two dimensional numerical model of the planetary boundary layer.

The model has two predictive equations for …
