Synthesis, Characterization, And Drug Delivery Applications Of Carbohydrate Based Low Molecular Weight Gelators, Kristen Elizabeth Bashaw Dec 2019

Synthesis, Characterization, And Drug Delivery Applications Of Carbohydrate Based Low Molecular Weight Gelators, Kristen Elizabeth Bashaw

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

The main aim of the research focuses on the study of self-assembly and gelation by several classes of simple sugar derivatives and the potential applications of them as drug delivery vehicles. Since carbohydrates are naturally abundant renewable resources and are therefore readily available and many of them are inexpensive compared to other raw materials. They are also biocompatible which makes them suitable for a wide variety of applications. Combining the use of carbohydrates with low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) we can introduce a new class of soft materials that are able to self-assemble into spheres, fibers, sheets, and micelles in …

An Analysis Of Indicator Organism Suitability For Lower James And York Rivers, Rhonda Ashonti Ford Apr 2006

An Analysis Of Indicator Organism Suitability For Lower James And York Rivers, Rhonda Ashonti Ford

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The primary objectives of this thesis are (1) determine if the proper indicator organism is being utilized to determine the bacterial water quality in the State of Virginia. (2) If other environmental factors can predict the bacterial water quality. The current indicator organism of choice for bacterial water quality of waters in the State of Virginia is enterococci, for estuarine and brackish waters. E. coli is the indicator organism of choice for fresh waters in Virginia.

The study concluded (1) Enterococci are the best indicator organism for beaches located in the Hampton Roads Harbor and the Lower James River. (2) …

Analysis Of Growth Curves Under Some Special Covariance Structures, Shobha Prabhala Oct 1995

Analysis Of Growth Curves Under Some Special Covariance Structures, Shobha Prabhala

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

In this dissertation we consider the growth curve or generalized MANOVA model in its most general form given by and develop statistical methodology for analyzing data using this model. Here g represents the number of groups, Yij is the observation matrix, ξ is a matrix of unknown parameters, Ai is a known matrix of rank g, and Bij is a matrix of rank k. Further, the rows of the error matrix ∈ij are independent and each distributed as Npij (0, Σij). This model accommodates different kinds of unbalanced data, such as, monotone data, data …

Lithofacies Of The Pliocene-Pleistocene Lucayan Limestone, Great Abaco Island, Little Bahama Bank, Mary K. Mullen Apr 1993

Lithofacies Of The Pliocene-Pleistocene Lucayan Limestone, Great Abaco Island, Little Bahama Bank, Mary K. Mullen

OES Theses and Dissertations

Petrographic and sedimentologic analyses of eleven shallow subsurface cores (3 to 19 meters in length) from the Lucayan Limestone where it occurs along northeastern Great Abaco Island (little Bahama Bank) are used to delineate five carbonate lithofacies. The most prevalent lithofacies is a mottled, nonskeletal, peloidal packstone to grainstone. Other lithofacies include a rudstone, a laminated nonskeletal grainstone, a crossbedded grainstone and a mudstone-wackestone.

Cementation varies from poor to very well cemented core intervals. Cements observed included equant granular, equant blocky, drusy, meniscus, and needle fiber "whisker" cements. These cements reflect a variety of diagenetic environments such as the vadose, …

Stable N-Chloraldimines And Other Chlorination Products Of Phenylalanine In Model Solutions And In A Wastewater, Barbara L. Conyers Jul 1991

Stable N-Chloraldimines And Other Chlorination Products Of Phenylalanine In Model Solutions And In A Wastewater, Barbara L. Conyers

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Model solutions of the amino acid phenylalanine were chlorinated to seven Cl/N mole ratios. The by-products were characterized using gas chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, GC/MS, infrared spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. At the lower Cl/N ratios N-chlorophenylalanine and phenylacetaldehyde were identified as the main products while phenylacetonitrile and N-chlorophenylacetaldimine were the major products at Cl/N ratios of 2.0 and beyond. The concentration of phenylalanine in a municipal wastewater was determined. Using a radiotracer the chlorination products of phenylalanine in the wastewater at the 7 Cl/N ratios were identified as those seen in the model solutions. The distribution of …

Effectiveness Analysis Of Knowledge Bases, Shensheng Zhao Apr 1991

Effectiveness Analysis Of Knowledge Bases, Shensheng Zhao

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Knowledge base systems (expert systems) are entering a critical stage as interest spreads from university research to practical applications. If knowledge base systems are to withstand this transition, special attention must be paid to checking their effectiveness. The issue of effectiveness analysis of knowledge base systems has been largely ignored and few works have been published in this field. This dissertation shows how the effectiveness of a knowledge base system can be defined, discussed and analyzed at the knowledge base system level and the knowledge base level. We characterize the effectiveness of a knowledge base system in terms of minimality, …

Analysis Of Organic N-Chloramines In Chlorinated Drinking Water, John Po Wen Yang Jul 1982

Analysis Of Organic N-Chloramines In Chlorinated Drinking Water, John Po Wen Yang

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

This thesis describes the development of a sensitive method for the separation and quantitation of organic N-chloramines in chlorinated tap water. 5-Dimethylaminonaphthalene- l-sulfinic acid has been synthesized and characterized. It yields highly fluorescent dansyl derivatives on reaction with N-chloramines. Conditions of the derivatization were optimized for the detection of N-chloropiperidine at concentrations in aqueous solution of 10-7 M. The technique gives a quantity of derivative which is proportional to the concentration of chloramine present over the range examined (10-7 M to 10-4 M). High pressure liquid chromatographic separation of dansyl derivatives of amines and amino acids has …
