Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Characterization Of Dynamics In Novel Electrochemical Materials, Christopher T. Mallia May 2019

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Characterization Of Dynamics In Novel Electrochemical Materials, Christopher T. Mallia

Theses and Dissertations

As our daily use of electronics and electronic technology grows, so does the societal need for sustainable, renewable and portable electrical power. To this end, materials of interest in the electrochemical world are needed to advance the frontier of battery science and energy storage technologies so that a safer, more efficient and reliable electrical future can be realized. This work focuses on characterization of materials primarily of interest for use as electrolytes in rechargeable Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIBs). Despite their extraordinary power, LIB application in certain fields, such as in electric vehicles, has been limited due to performance and safety concerns. …

Magnetic Resonance Studies Of Free Radicals Generation And Their Impact In Different Polymers, Sunita Humagain Feb 2019

Magnetic Resonance Studies Of Free Radicals Generation And Their Impact In Different Polymers, Sunita Humagain

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Studies of free radicals in the physics, chemistry, biology, and materials science have contributed to advancements in those fields. The presence of radicals can damage the material and system in some instances and, in some cases, they may enhance the property of the material as well. Knowledge of free radical transformations helps in resilience of certain polymers and inhibition of the oxidation of food and medicine. In this thesis, using the magnetic resonance techniques, EPR and NMR, the generation of free radicals and their effect on the structure of the material is being studied.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Studies Of Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids And Garnet-Type Li7la3zr2o12, Shen Lai Sep 2018

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Studies Of Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids And Garnet-Type Li7la3zr2o12, Shen Lai

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Advancements in electrochemical energy storage materials are critical in the development and utilization of renewable energy technologies. These advancements involve obtaining a better understanding of electrochemical mechanisms and properties through scientific research towards an improved energy storage technology. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), is a sensitive and selective method to probe particle dynamics (magnetic relaxation, diffusometry, etc.) and material structures (spectroscopy) down to the atomic level. In this work, several NMR techniques are employed to study imidazolium-based ionic liquids and garnet-type inorganic materials. These are being studied due to their potential use as safer alternatives to organic solvent-based electrolytes in lithium-ion …

Nmr Studies Of Electrochemical Energy Storage Materials, Jing Peng Sep 2016

Nmr Studies Of Electrochemical Energy Storage Materials, Jing Peng

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Electrochemical energy storage materials constitute essential elements in the development of sustainable energy technologies. They are crucial for improving the efficiency of energy storage devices to facilitate the use of renewable resources. The increasing human demands for energy and limitation of fossil fuel stimulates the continued development of energy storage materials. Better understanding of their working mechanisms and electrochemical properties from a view of chemistry is quite necessary for improving the energy storage technology. In this work, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) has been used as a powerful tool to characterize the solvation behavior and diffusion ability of some commonly used …

Variable Pressure Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Studies Of Ionic Liquids And Electrophoretic Probe Design, Armando Julio Rua Oct 2014

Variable Pressure Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Studies Of Ionic Liquids And Electrophoretic Probe Design, Armando Julio Rua

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Energy storage materials play a key role in, efficient, clean, and versatile use of energy, and are crucial for the exploitation of renewable energy. The improve efficiency of energy use stimulates the development of energy storage such as batteries or super capacitors, toward higher power and energy density, which significantly depends upon the advancement of new materials used in these devices. The new materials need better understanding and description in the electrochemical properties. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) has been an important tool in the characterization of ionic liquids and solids. The measurements of the relaxation times and the diffusion coefficient …
