The Effect Of Naocl, Ca(Oh)2, Mta And Mtad On Root Dentin Fracture Resistance, Sunil Ilapogu
The Effect Of Naocl, Ca(Oh)2, Mta And Mtad On Root Dentin Fracture Resistance, Sunil Ilapogu
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Various materials are used for the treatment of immature teeth that have been subjected to trauma or decay. It is not well established what effect these materials may have on the immature root dentin. A concern would be the resistance to fracture of the remaining root dentin. The purpose of this study was to compare the resistance of fracture of bovine teeth treated with sodium hypochlorite, calcium hydroxide, gray MTA and gray MTA in conjunction with MTAD after certain periods of time. One hundred and ninety five freshly extracted, intact bovine incisors were prepared using a modified Haapasalo and Orstavik …
Ip Algorithm Applied To Proteomics Data, Christopher Lee Green
Ip Algorithm Applied To Proteomics Data, Christopher Lee Green
Theses and Dissertations
Mass spectrometry has been used extensively in recent years as a valuable tool in the study of proteomics. However, the data thus produced exhibits hyper-dimensionality. Reducing the dimensionality of the data often requires the imposition of many assumptions which can be harmful to subsequent analysis. The IP algorithm is a dimension reduction algorithm, similar in purpose to latent variable analysis. It is based on the principle of maximum entropy and therefore imposes a minimum number of assumptions on the data. Partial Least Squares (PLS) is an algorithm commonly used with proteomics data from mass spectrometry in order to reduce the …
Quantifying Initial Condition And Parametric Uncertainties In A Nonlinear Aeroelastic System With An Efficient Stochastic Algorithm, Daniel R. Millman
Quantifying Initial Condition And Parametric Uncertainties In A Nonlinear Aeroelastic System With An Efficient Stochastic Algorithm, Daniel R. Millman
Theses and Dissertations
There is a growing interest in understanding how uncertainties in flight conditions and structural parameters affect the character of a limit cycle oscillation (LCO) response, leading to failure of an aeroelastic system. Uncertainty quantification of a stochastic system (parametric uncertainty) with stochastic inputs (initial condition uncertainty) has traditionally been analyzed with Monte Carlo simulations (MCS). Probability density functions (PDF) of the LCO response are obtained from the MCS to estimate the probability of failure. A candidate approach to efficiently estimate the PDF of an LCO response is the stochastic projection method. The objective of this research is to extend the …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The present pilot study is a histological evaluation of mandibular condyles taken from minipigs that underwent either traditional mandibular advancement (bilateral sagittal split osteotomy), or a distraction osteogenesis procedure to advance the mandible. One pig received a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy with an immediate mandibular advancement of 14 mm, while another pig underwent distraction osteogenesis consisting of a gradual advancement of 2 mm per day to advance the mandible the same distance. The control animal received no surgery.
In the present study, the mandibular condyles of the three pigs (2 control, 2 bilateral sagittal split osteotomy, and 2 distraction osteogenesis) …
Singular Value Decomposition Of Analogs Of Gbr 12909, Anna Fiorentino
Singular Value Decomposition Of Analogs Of Gbr 12909, Anna Fiorentino
Theses
Analogs of GBR 12909 are drugs that could potentially be used to treat cocaine addiction. Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) is a multivariate analysis technique used to show relationships between the data and the variables associated with the data. The input data consists of the conformers of each analog (DM324, 728 conformers; TP250, 739 conformers) along with the eight torsional angles (Al, A2, B1-B6). A novel scaling technique was developed to address the problem of data circularity by subtracting the values of the torsional angles of the global energy minimum conformation from those of each conformer.
In SVD the original data …

A Comparative Study Of Interrater Reliability Coefficients Obtained From Different Statistical Procedures Using Monte Carlo Simulation Techniques, Ebrima Nying
Dissertations
Reliability estimation is a key research component within the global area of educational assessment. The literature reports numerous studies using different statistical techniques for estimating reliability of educational measures. However, few have focused on the estimation of interrater reliability of performance assessment (Abedi, Baker, & Herl, 1995). Specifically, this study compared three different methods for estimating interrater reliability to determine if there are differences among these estimates as a function of: sample size, measurement scale, number of raters and the theoretical population reliability (rho). The three methods of estimation were the Intraclass Correlation (ICC(2, k )) (Shrout & Fleiss, 1979), …
Instructing Teachers Of Children With Disabilities Within The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Katie E. Sampson
Instructing Teachers Of Children With Disabilities Within The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Katie E. Sampson
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates benefits of in-service training on LDS primary teachers' ability to state an objective, obtain and keep attention, use wait time, incorporate active participation, teach to the multiple intelligences, and employ positive behavior management techniques. Two groups of 30 viewed either a video-tape or read a handout. Pre and post surveys were used to determine mean gain.
Using an ANCOVA, comparisons were made of overall mean gain for each group. Results showed participants made a gain of approximately 1/2 point per question on a 4-point scale on the video and the handout (video gain = .6032 p<.01; handout gain = .6264 p<.01). The results of this study support the hypothesis that teachers receiving one in-service will increase their perception of their ability to teach students with special needs.
Probabilistic Methodology For Record Linkage Determining Robustness Of Weights, Krista Peine Jensen
Probabilistic Methodology For Record Linkage Determining Robustness Of Weights, Krista Peine Jensen
Theses and Dissertations
Record linkage is the process that joins separately recorded pieces of information for a particular individual from one or more sources. To facilitate record linkage, a reliable computer based approach is ideal. In genealogical research computerized record linkage is useful in combing information for an individual across multiple censuses.
In creating a computerized method for linking censuse records it needs to be determined if weights calculated from one geographical area, can be used to link records from another geographical area. Research performed by Marcie Francis calculates field weights using census records from 1910 and 1920 for Ascension Parish Louisiana. These …

Hiring Practices For Graphic Designers In Utah County, Utah, Landon T. Densley
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to show how hiring standards of evidence for graphic designers in Utah County compared with the national standards of evidence. The four major national standards of evidence for hiring graphic designers, identified by American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and Goldfarb, in order of importance are portfolio, recommendations, personality, and education. The data from this study revealed that Utah County employer's standards of evidence matched up closely to national standards of evidence, but the order of importance was slightly different because personality was ranked ahead of recommendations and education.
Affine Equivariant Multivariate Rank-Based And Generalized Rank Regression, Majeda Salman
Affine Equivariant Multivariate Rank-Based And Generalized Rank Regression, Majeda Salman
Dissertations
Affine equivariant estimates for the regression coefficient matrix of the multivariate linear model are proposed. These estimates are based on a transformation and retransformation technique that uses Tyler's (1987) M -estimator of scatter. The proposed estimates are obtained by retransforming the componentwiserank-based estimate due to Davis and McKean (1993) and a componentwise generalized rank estimate. Asymptotic properties of the estimates are established under some regularity conditions. It is shown that both estimates have a multivariate normal limiting distribution. The influence function of the retransformed generalized rank estimate has a bounded influence in both factor and response spaces. It is shown …

On Similarity Measures For Cluster Analysis, Ahrned Najeeb Khalaf Albatineh
Dissertations
This study discusses the relationship between measures of similarity which quantify the agreement between two clusterings of the same set of data. This study identifies a family [Special characters omitted.] of similarity measures which are of a special form and attain a maximum value of 1 and becomes identical when corrected for chance agreement. In particular, this study proves that the similarity measures of Rand (R), Hubert (H), and Czekanowski (CZ) are identical when corrected for chance agreement. It also proves that the measures of McConnaughey (MC) and Kulczynski (K) are identical when corrected for chance agreement. Moreover, if the …
The Association Of Blood Type On The Five Factors Of Personality In Chinese Adolescents, Kunher Wu
The Association Of Blood Type On The Five Factors Of Personality In Chinese Adolescents, Kunher Wu
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to identify the number of personality factors in Chinese adolescents using the Chinese Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) and to determine whether blood type is associated with personality. It is widely accepted by psychologists that the five-factor model can provide an adequate representation of adult personality dimensions, but there is less agreement on the number of factors observable in adolescence. A total of 3,396 11th graders from the city of Kaohsiung, Taiwan completed the Chinese NEO-PI-R. Principle component analysis with varimax rotation showed five factors of personality in these Taiwanese adolescents, which clearly …

Relative Validity Of A Food Frequency Questionnaire Used To Assess Food And Nutrient Intake In A Dietary Intervention Study, Gina Segovia Siapco
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Food frequency questionnaire is a cost effective alternative for measuring dietary intake when conducting large scale surveys. We investigated the validity of a 171-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire in assessing food and nutrient intakes and the prescribed intervention measure during a randomized field trial. Eighty-seven free-living adults (48 females and 39 males) aged 30-72 years provided dietary information by self-administering the Walnut Study Dietary Assessment Questionnaire (WSDAQ), which assessed intake over the past six months, and through seven unannounced non-consecutive 24-hour dietary recalls by telephone. Participants were randomly assigned to either a walnut or habitual diet at baseline. For six …
Analysis Of Molecular Conformations Using Relative Planes, Deepa S. Pai
Analysis Of Molecular Conformations Using Relative Planes, Deepa S. Pai
Theses
Ring substructures of a drug usually participate actively in binding to the receptor. It is necessary to study the spatial relationship of these molecular recognition features in order to determine the pharmacophore of the drug. This is a particularly difficult problem when the drug is a flexible molecule with many energetically accessible conformations.
In this research an innovative approach to calculate the relative displacement and orientation of every possible pair of rings in a given molecule was designed, tested, and implemented in the "Planes" program. Planes were defined from each of the ring substructures and the displacement and rotation of …

Performance Of The Kenward-Project When The Covariance Structure Is Selected Using Aic And Bic, Elisa Valderas Gomez
Performance Of The Kenward-Project When The Covariance Structure Is Selected Using Aic And Bic, Elisa Valderas Gomez
Theses and Dissertations
Linear mixed models are frequently used to analyze data with random effects and/or repeated measures. A common approach to such analyses requires choosing a covariance structure. Information criteria, such as AIC and BIC, are often used by statisticians to help with this task. However, these criteria do not always point to the true covariance structure and therefore the wrong covariance structure is sometimes chosen. Once this step is complete, Wald statistics are used to test fixed effects. Degrees of freedom for these statistics are not known. However, there are approximation methods, such as Kenward and Roger (KR) and Satterthwaite (SW) …
The "Fair" Triathlon: Equating Standard Deviations Using Non-Linear Bayesian Models, Steven Mckay Curtis
The "Fair" Triathlon: Equating Standard Deviations Using Non-Linear Bayesian Models, Steven Mckay Curtis
Theses and Dissertations
The Ironman triathlon was created in 1978 by combining events with the longest distances for races then contested in Hawaii in swimming, cycling, and running. The Half Ironman triathlon was formed using half the distances of each of the events in the Ironman. The Olympic distance triathlon was created by combining events with the longest distances for races sanctioned by the major federations for swimming, cycling, and running. The relative importance of each event in overall race outcome was not given consideration when determining the distances of each of the races in modern triathlons. Thus, there is a general belief …
Validation Of Criteria Used To Predict Warfarin Dosing Decisions, Nicole Thomas
Validation Of Criteria Used To Predict Warfarin Dosing Decisions, Nicole Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
People at risk for blood clots are often treated with anticoagulants, warfarin is such an anticoagulant. The dose's effect is measured by comparing the time for blood to clot to a control time called an INR value. Previous anticoagulant studies have addressed agreement between fingerstick (POC) devices and the standard laboratory, however these studies rely on mathematical formulas as criteria for clinical evaluations, i.e. clinical evaluation vs. precision and bias. Fourteen such criteria were found in the literature. There exists little consistency among these criteria for assessing clinical agreement, furthermore whether these methods of assessing agreement are reasonable estimates of …
The Robustness Of Factor Analyses When The Data Does Not Conform To Standard Parametric Requirements, Haisong Peng

An Applied Statistical Reliability Analysis Of The Internal Bond Of Medium Density Fiberboard, David Joseph Edwards
Masters Theses
The forest products industry has seen tremendous growth in recent years and has a huge impact on the economies of many countries. For example, in the state of Maine in 1997, the forest products industry accounted for 9 billion U.S. dollars for that year. In the state of Tennessee, for example in 2000, this figure was 22 billion U.S. dollars for that year. It has, therefore, become more important in this industry to focus on production higher quality products. Statistical reliability methods, among other techniques, have been employed to help monitor and improve the quality of forest products. With such …

Mathematical And Empirical Modeling Of Chemical Reactions In A Microreactor, Jing Hu
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation is concerned with mathematical and empirical modeling to simulate three important chemical reactions (cyclohexene hydrogenation and dehydrogenation, preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide, and the Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis in a microreaction system.
Empirical modeling and optimization techniques based on experimental design (Central Composite Design (CCD)) and response surface methodology were applied to these three chemical reactions. Regression models were built, and the operating conditions (such as temperature, the ratio of the reactants, and total flow rate) which maximize reactant conversion and product selectivity were determined for each reaction.
A probability model for predicting the probability that a certain species …

An Analysis Of The Periodicity Of The Cell Cycle And Apoptotic Regulatory Proteins In Prostate Xenografts Using Anova And Cosinor Methods, Aleen Hosdaghian
Theses
Circadian rhythms have been found in both plants and animals, in normal tissues as well as in most tumors and human cancers. By following these rhythms in healthy and cancerous tissue, it has been possible to find optimal times to deliver a dose of drug, such that efficacy is maximized and toxicity to normal tissues is minimized. In this study, the periodicity of several cell cycle and apoptotic regulatory proteins were studied in two prostate cancer models against a dietary therapeutic agent, Selenium. The ALVA-3 1 (androgen-independent) and PC-3 (androgen-independent) prostate cancer cell lines were grown in vivo, as a …

Fundamental Conditions For The Evolution Of Altruism: Towards A Unification Of Theories, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher
Fundamental Conditions For The Evolution Of Altruism: Towards A Unification Of Theories, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher
Dissertations and Theses
In evolutionary theory the existence of self-sacrificing cooperative traits poses a problem that has engendered decades of debate. The principal theories of the evolution of altruism are inclusive fitness, reciprocal altruism, and multilevel selection. To provide a framework for the unification o f these apparently disparate theories, this dissertation identifies two fundamental conditions required for the evolution of altruism: 1) non-zero-sum fitness benefits for cooperation and 2) positive assortment among altruistic behaviors. I demonstrate the underlying similarities in these three theories in the following two ways. First, I show that the game-theoretic model of the prisoner’s dilemm a (PD) is …
