The Relationship Of Dietary And Lifestyle Factors To Bone Mineral Density Of Healthy Singaporean Chinese Women, Ampai Dana Aimsiri

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Few studies have examined the risk factors associated with reduced bone mass in Asians, but none specifically investigated Singaporean Chinese women. The subjects in this study were 16 premenopausal, 8 perimenopausal and 13 postmenopausal women who participated in a larger study which began in 1986. Bone density was measured in 1986 and 1992. Dietary and lifestyle data were collected for this study by personal interview. Association between dietary and lifestyle factors and bone density variables and change in bone density at the end of the 6 year period were assessed by univariate regression analyses.

Postmenopausal women had significantly lower baseline …

Some Sampling Designs And Estimation Problems, Hassan Lakkis Jul 1994

Some Sampling Designs And Estimation Problems, Hassan Lakkis

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

In the first chapter we review some standard estimators in sampling from a finite population, and some design-based estimators in sampling from a continuous universe.

In concert with the theory initiated by professor Douglas Robson (personal communication) and later presented by Cordy (1993), we consider design-based variance estimation for probability sampling from a continuous and spatially distributed universe. Using this theory in chapter two, the sampling design of one random point from each cell of a translated grid is investigated and the problem of edge effects on estimation is illustrated with examples. Also in chapter four, standard systematic sampling methods …

Militarywide Survey Of Whole-Grain Food Products And Total Dietary Fiber Analysis Of The Military Ration, John Paul Warber Jun 1994

Militarywide Survey Of Whole-Grain Food Products And Total Dietary Fiber Analysis Of The Military Ration, John Paul Warber

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Numerous scientific bodies have made the recommendation to increase consumption of whole-grain breads and cereals. This study used a telephone survey to assess the availability of whole-grain foods in a random selection of 109 military installations and 30 military hospitals. Surveyed installations represent over 70% of the active duty military population assigned in the continental United States.

Military food service specialists were asked questions regarding the availability of the following whole-grain products: bread, rolls, buns, flour, pancake mix, brown rice, and ready-to-eat cereals (RTE). They were then asked to read the product ingredient list to validate their perceptions. Perceived availability …

Measurement Of Blood Flow In Reflected Muco-Gingival Tissue Flaps In Cats : Using The Radiolabeled Microsphere Method, Gary T. Wuchenrich Jun 1994

Measurement Of Blood Flow In Reflected Muco-Gingival Tissue Flaps In Cats : Using The Radiolabeled Microsphere Method, Gary T. Wuchenrich

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Blood flow to the maxilla and mandible may vary due to differences in vascular supply and in physiologic, metabolic and pathologic conditions. In general it is accepted that oral tissues have an abundant blood supply; however, there is little information quantifying blood flow to these regions. In this study, the maxillary tissues were chosen to measure the blood flow in attached and reflected gingival tissue in adult cats using the radiolabeled microsphere method.

Sixteen cats with permanent dentition, clean mouths, and without inflamed gingiva upon visual inspection were used and divided into two groups. Group 1 consisted of six cats …

Long-Term Posttreatment Upper Incisor Inclination : Relative To Facial Axis Angulation As A Measure For Incisor Placement, David Lawrence Sparks Jun 1994

Long-Term Posttreatment Upper Incisor Inclination : Relative To Facial Axis Angulation As A Measure For Incisor Placement, David Lawrence Sparks

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study was designed to determine whether upper central incisor inclination approximated the facial axis, long-term, posttreatment, regardless of the initial malocclusion or immediate posttreatment incisor inclination. Lateral head films at pretreatment, immediate posttreatment and long-term posttreatment were traced and evaluated. The sample was divided into facial type. Angle classification and treatment type (extraction vs. non-extraction). Statistical analyses included means, standard deviations, confidence intervals, population t tests and chi-square tabulations.

The results revealed that the upper central incisor did not approximate the facial axis after a minimum of 7 years posttreatment. This failed to support the use of the facial …

Identification Of Risk Factors Associated With Pulpal Disease, Shelley R. Aronson Jun 1994

Identification Of Risk Factors Associated With Pulpal Disease, Shelley R. Aronson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A few studies have identified etiologic factors in pulpal disease, but little is known about the odds ratios of factors associated with pulpal disease. Odds ratios are well established measures of the effects of exposure to a particular outcome, and are comparisons of exposure to non-exposure in cases versus controls. The purpose of this study was to compare exposure of individual teeth to hypothesized risk factors in endodontic cases and in controls. This case-control study consisted of a chart review of 301 endodontic cases and 301 controls. Caries, types of restorations, and periodontal disease were the most significant factors. With …

Statistical Properties And Problems In Modeling The Bolivian Foreign Exchange Market, Gover Barja May 1994

Statistical Properties And Problems In Modeling The Bolivian Foreign Exchange Market, Gover Barja

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Bolivian foreign exchange market is explained in terms of the official and parallel exchange rates. The data covers the post hyper inflationary period from 1986 to 1992. The distribution of the rate of depreciation of the official and parallel exchange rates is long tailed and strongly departs from normality due to the existence of outliers. A market interactions model of the autoregressive kind is estimated using robust regression. This procedure produces M-parameter estimates using iteratively reweighted least squares. The robust method handles well the outlier problem and at the same time it reveals the true nature of the statistical …

Methods For The Comparison Of Timing Behavior Applied To The Pink Salmon Fisheries Of Prince William Sound, Alaska, Louis J. Rugolo Apr 1994

Methods For The Comparison Of Timing Behavior Applied To The Pink Salmon Fisheries Of Prince William Sound, Alaska, Louis J. Rugolo

OES Theses and Dissertations

Harvest control in salmonid fisheries was examined as a problem in the formulation of regulations which restrict time and area of fishing. An ability to rigorously define and compare the form of the progression of migration across time and between harvest areas was judged fundamental to objective harvest decisions. Identification and evaluation of statistical methods appropriate to the comparison of empirical migratory time densities was performed.

The development of the measure of central tendency (mean date) of the time density as the consistent, unbiased estimator of migratory behavior was given. Practical evidence demonstrated that the mean date was highly resistant …

Estimating Groundwater Flow Parameters Using Response Surface Methodology, Leo C. Adams Apr 1994

Estimating Groundwater Flow Parameters Using Response Surface Methodology, Leo C. Adams

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examined the use of response surface methodology RSM as a parameter estimation technique in the field of groundwater flow modeling. Using RSM, an attempt was made to calibrate three hydraulic parameters porosity, transverse permeability, and rate of recharge of an existing two- dimensional, steady-state flow model. The model simulated groundwater flow for a portion of landfill 10 located on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. The model had previously been calibrated by graphical matching observed water-levels to predicted water-levels. Using the parameter values from the earlier calibration effort as a starting point, a central composite design was developed and …

The Use Of L-Moments To Fit The Generalized Lambda Distribution To Sample Data, Robert B. Mohan Mar 1994

The Use Of L-Moments To Fit The Generalized Lambda Distribution To Sample Data, Robert B. Mohan

Theses and Dissertations

The Generalized Lambda Distribution GLD is a four-parameter, continuous probability distribution that is useful for simulation analysis. The strengths of the GLD lie in its abilities to approximate many distributions, represent data when the underlying distribution is unknown, and fit or generate random variates. The method of moments is presently the accepted technique for estimating the parameters of this distribution. However, it is sensitive to extreme observations and subject to large sampling variability as the sample size decreases. L-moments are expectations of certain linear combinations of order statistics. They can be used to estimate parameters and quantiles of probability distributions. …

Proactive Monitoring Of Performance In Stochastic Communication Networks, John C. C. Van Hove Mar 1994

Proactive Monitoring Of Performance In Stochastic Communication Networks, John C. C. Van Hove

Theses and Dissertations

This research proposes several models for placing bounds on the expected values of some dynamic performance measures for computer communication networks with failing components. These models provide an understanding of expected network performance that is useful in the process of proactive performance monitoring and also in defining level of service agreements with network users. There were three objectives for this research. The first objective was to extend some existing models of steady-state stochastic network performance to a dynamic network flow representation in order to capture the dynamic nature of proactive monitoring. The second objective was to convert the extended absolute …

An Analysis Of Operational Suitability For Test And Evaluation Of Highly Reliable Systems, James N. Serpa

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to develop a quantitative measure of operational suitability OS and determine its applicability in making the test length decision prior to Initial Operational Test and Evaluation IOTE. The current approach used by the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center AFOTEC was presented and used to establish the relationships of the test measures. It was established that OS could be represented by a function of operational availability Ao and built-in test effectiveness BE. BE was defined and measures proposed based on the method of data collection. A proposal for predicting Ao, BE, and OS …

Several Modified Goodness-Of-Fit Tests For The Cauchy Distribution With Unknown Scale And Location Parameters, Bora H. Onen Mar 1994

Several Modified Goodness-Of-Fit Tests For The Cauchy Distribution With Unknown Scale And Location Parameters, Bora H. Onen

Theses and Dissertations

Kolmogorov-Simirnov and the Kuiper goodness-of-fit tests are studied for the Cauchy distribution with the unknown location and scale parameters. Monte Carlo simulation studies were performed using maximum likelihood estimation to calculate the critical values for standard Kolmogorov-Simirnov and the Kuiper tests. Then a reflection technique is introduced and the critical value tables are calculated for both the Reflected Kolmogorov-Simirnov and the Reflected Kuiper tests. Several sequential tests are performed by combining standard Kolmogorov-Simirnov and Kuiper in one test, standard Cramer-von Mises and the standard Kuiper in the other and finally the reflected Cramer-von Mises and the standard Kuiper in the …

The Standardized Influence Matrix And Its Applications To Generalized Linear Models, Jiandong Lu Jan 1994

The Standardized Influence Matrix And Its Applications To Generalized Linear Models, Jiandong Lu

Theses and Dissertations

The standardized influence matrix is a generalization of the standardized influence function and Cook’s approach to local influence. It provides a general and unified approach to judge the suitability of statistical inference based on parametric models. It characterizes the local influence of data deviations from parametric models on various estimators, including generalized linear models. Its use for both robustness measures and diagnostic procedures has been studied. With global robust estimators, diagnostic statistics are proposed and shown to be useful in detecting influential points for linear regression and logistic regression models. Robustness of various estimators is compared via. the standardized influence …

Presidential Popularity And The Linear Model, April Gosser Jan 1994

Presidential Popularity And The Linear Model, April Gosser

Honors Theses

Since the 1970's, much research has been done in an attempt to determine variables that cause decline of the president's popularity. Although there are different studies that give various reasons for the decline of the president's popularity, all agree that there is a trend of decline over the president's term. To represent the decline, James Stimson suggested a parabola model, whereas John Mueller suggested a linear-regression model. This paper attempts to show that a linear-regression model is more effective in explaining decline of the presidents from Truman to Johnson, than from Nixon to Bush. The findings show that a linear …

Invariance Properties Of Statistical Tests For Dependent Observations, Akhil K. Vaish Jan 1994

Invariance Properties Of Statistical Tests For Dependent Observations, Akhil K. Vaish

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

In this dissertation we assume that the observations are from normal populations but are correlated and study the problem of characterizing the class of covariance structures such that the distributions of the popular test statistics remain invariant, that is, they remain the same except for a constant factor. We first obtain some simple extensions and variations of the well known Cauchy-Schwarz inequality. Incidentally, several inequalities that are useful in the detection of outliers can be deduced from our results.

Our main result is a characterization of the class of all nonnegative definite solutions W to the matrix equation AWA = …

Application Of Time Series Models To Sets Of Environmental Data, Saarah Ahmed Farag Jan 1994

Application Of Time Series Models To Sets Of Environmental Data, Saarah Ahmed Farag

Theses : Honours

In environmental studies, many programs have been implemented for the purpose of examining the influence of factors on the natural environment from various sources. In the past, predictions have been obtained from a simple regression model of the data from these programs to aid in deciding whether an intervention is required in the program or policy. However, most environmental time series involve correlated dependent variables which makes it difficult to apply conventional regression analysis. This thesis compares the application of the class of transfer function models, where high correlation between dependent variables is allowed, to that of conventional regression analysis. …

Predicting Missionary Service, Bert Burraston Jan 1994

Predicting Missionary Service, Bert Burraston

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to test the antecedents of religiosity on religious commitment. Specifically, what dimensions of religiosity predict if a young-adult Mormon male will serve a mission. Both Logistic Regression and LISREL were used to examine data from the Young Men's Study, in order to predict Mission. The six variables, Religious Intention, Public Religiosity, Religious Negativism, Family Structure, Tithing, and Smoking were found to have direct effects on missionary service. Four more variables were found to have important indirect effects on Mission. The four variables are Parents Church Attendance, Home Religious Observances, Agree With Parents' Values, and …
