Hydroxy Polybenzimidazoles For High Temperature Fuel Cells And The Solution Polymerization Of Polybenzimidazole, Kayley Fishel Dec 2015

Hydroxy Polybenzimidazoles For High Temperature Fuel Cells And The Solution Polymerization Of Polybenzimidazole, Kayley Fishel

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, two different hompolymers of polybenzimidazole (PBI) containing hydroxyl functional units were synthesized via the PPA Process to produce gel membranes. These polymers and their phosphoric acid doped membranes were characterized to further explore structure-property relationships in functionalized PBI's. Fuel cell performance of the doped membranes was evaluated and compared to previously reported PBI membrane chemistries. Copolymers of p-OH PBI and para-PBI were prepared at five different copolymer compositions to examine the effects of hydroxy content on membrane properties and compared to the respective homopolymers. The reactivity of the hydroxy groups and the formation of phosphate bridges were …

The Effect Of Composition And Architecture On Polymer Behavior In Homopolymer Blends And Inter-Filament Bonding In 3d Printed Models, Edward Roy Duranty Dec 2015

The Effect Of Composition And Architecture On Polymer Behavior In Homopolymer Blends And Inter-Filament Bonding In 3d Printed Models, Edward Roy Duranty

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation presents work that increases our understanding of the effects of composition and architecture on copolymer structure and dynamics and how they affect material diffusion between filaments in a 3D printed model. Copolymers are polymer chains made up of at least two different monomers. The ordering and arrangement of the two monomer species within a copolymer can have drastic effects on the behavior and properties of the copolymer.

The first chapter of this dissertation examines how the copolymer composition affects the structure and dynamics of the chain in a homopolymer blend. This study used a modified Monte Carlo BFM …

Tunable Photonic Multilayers From Stimulus-Responsive, Photo-Crosslinkable Polymers, Maria C. Chiappelli Aug 2015

Tunable Photonic Multilayers From Stimulus-Responsive, Photo-Crosslinkable Polymers, Maria C. Chiappelli

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation describes the synthesis of photo-crosslinkable copolymers and their utilization for the fabrication and testing of tunable and responsive one-dimensional (1D) photonic multilayers. Photonic multilayers exhibit structural color due to the interference of incident light at layer interfaces, providing a convenient route towards optically responsive materials that do not rely on potentially light- or oxygen-sensitive chromophore-containing pigments and dyes. A fabrication technique based on sequential spin-coating and crosslinking of photo-crosslinkable polymers is used to assemble tunable and responsive photonic multilayers. Chapter One introduces the fundamental underlying principles of 1D photonic structures and explores their importance in a variety of …

Metal-Ligand Cooperative Catalysis And Methods For Metal Removal From Organic Transformations, John-Paul J. Bow Aug 2015

Metal-Ligand Cooperative Catalysis And Methods For Metal Removal From Organic Transformations, John-Paul J. Bow

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Organometallic catalysis has revolutionized the synthesis of complex organic molecules. Methods for C-C, C-X and C-H bond formation and cleavage are exploited throughout the areas of fine chemicals synthesis, with major applications for pharmaceuticals. This situation raises duel challenges: 1) high-performance catalysts for environmentally and economically sustainable synthesis and 2) efficient methods of catalyst (i.e. metal) removal must be identified. This work tackles both of these areas. The highly tunable cooperative PR2NR'2 ligands have been implemented for the first time for catalytic organic transformations. I show that [Ru(Cp)(PtBu2NBn2)(MeCN)][PF6 …

Polymer Additives Effects On Structure And Dynamics, Adam Eugene Imel Aug 2015

Polymer Additives Effects On Structure And Dynamics, Adam Eugene Imel

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation presents work that expands the understanding of the effect additives have on the structure and dynamics of a polymer matrix. Polymer additives are molecules, nanoparticles or fibers that are added to a polymer to modify the properties of the host polymer. Due to the vast amount of additives available, our studies were limited to C60 (C60), soft polystyrene nanoparticles, and poly(ethylene oxide).

The first part of this project examined the influence that C60 nanoparticles have on the assembly of polyacrylonitrile using small angle and wide-angle x-ray scattering techniques and viscometry. The addition of C60 (C60) …

Development Of Flexible Batteries Using Nano-Carbons And Polymers, Zhiqian Wang May 2015

Development Of Flexible Batteries Using Nano-Carbons And Polymers, Zhiqian Wang

Dissertations

Flexible electronics such as wearable equipment, displays, cell phones and smart cards require flexible power sources like batteries. In this thesis, the development of flexible batteries and supercapacitors are presented. Different types of flexible batteries including zinc carbon batteries, primary alkaline batteries, secondary alkaline batteries and zinc air cells are presented, These were designed, fabricated and improved using polymers and nano-carbons like carbon nanotubes (CNTs). CNTs are found to be effective as conductive additives compared to the traditional graphite. Purification is important to remove impurities that lead to side reactions/ corrosions. However, further treatment like carboxylation lead to higher electric …

Polymerization Of Blocked Isocyanate Functional Polymer Surfaces And Post-Polymerization Modification By Thiol-Isocyanate Reactions, Chase A. Tretbar May 2015

Polymerization Of Blocked Isocyanate Functional Polymer Surfaces And Post-Polymerization Modification By Thiol-Isocyanate Reactions, Chase A. Tretbar

Honors Theses

Direct polymerization of isocyanate-functional monomers has been achieved with controlled radical polymerizations (CRP) for precisely engineered modification platforms with highly reactive side chains. However, despite the success of these strategies, the inherent reactivity of isocyanates still leads to adverse side reactions, such as hydrolysis, that are difficult to suppress. Phenol, lactam, and oxime-based blocking agents have been used to limit the reactivity of isocyanates in applications such as multicomponent urethane coating systems. The reactivity of these blocked isocyanates can be restored by thermal deprotection of the blocking agent to achieve the desired reactions. In this work, we use blocked isocyanate-functional …

Multi-Mode And Single Mode Polymer Waveguides And Structures For Short-Haul Optical Interconnects, Kevin L. Kruse Jan 2015

Multi-Mode And Single Mode Polymer Waveguides And Structures For Short-Haul Optical Interconnects, Kevin L. Kruse

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Single mode and multi-mode polymer optical waveguides are a viable solution for replacing copper interconnects as high speed and large bandwidth short-haul optical interconnects in next-generation supercomputers and data servers. A precision laser direct writing method is implemented for producing various single mode and multi-mode polymer waveguide structures and their performance is evaluated experimentally showing agreement with theoretically developed models. The laser direct writing method is the optimal solution for low-rate cost-effective prototyping and large area panel production.

A single mode polymer waveguide bridge module for silicon to glass optical fibers is designed, modeled, fabricated, and measured. The bridge module …
