Ambient Facile Synthesis Of Gram-Scale Copper Selenide Nanostructures From Commercial Copper And Selenium Powder, Xinqi Chen, Zhen Li, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Grams of copper selenides (Cu2-xSe) were prepared from commercial copper and selenium powders in the presence of thiol ligands by a one-pot reaction at room temperature. The resultant copper selenides are a mixture of nanoparticles and their assembled nanosheets, and the thickness of nanosheets assembled is strongly dependent on the ratio of thiol ligand to selenium powder. The resultant Cu2-xSe (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25) nanostructures were treated with hydrazine solution to remove the surface ligands and then explored as a potential thermoelectric candidate in comparison with commercial copper selenide powders. The research provides a novel …

Synthesis And Formation Mechanism Of Cuins2 Nanocrystals With A Tunable Phase, Chao Yu, Linlin Zhang, Long Tian, Dan Liu, Fanglin Chen, Cheng Wang

Faculty Publications

Chalcopyrite CuInS2 (CIS) hierarchical structures composed of nanoflakes with a thickness of about 5 nm were synthesized by a facial solvothermal method. The thermodynamically metastable wurtzite phase CIS would be obtained by using InCl3 instead of In(NO3)3 as In precursor. The effects of the In precursor and the volume of concentrated HCl aqueous solution on the phases and morphologies of CIS nanocrystals have been systematically investigated. Experimental results indicated that the obtained phases of CIS nanocrystals were predominantly determined by precursor-induced intermediate products. The photocatalytic properties of chalcopyrite and wurtzite CIS in visible-light-driven degradation of …

A Novel Dual Allosteric Activation Mechanism Of Escherichia Coli Adp-Glucose Pyrophosphorylase: The Role Of Pyruvate, Matías D. Asención Diez, Mabel C. Aleanzi, Alberto A. Iglesias, Miguel Ballicora

Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Fructose-1,6-bisphosphate activates ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase and the synthesis of glycogen in Escherichia coli. Here, we show that although pyruvate is a weak activator by itself, it synergically enhances the fructose-1,6-bisphosphate activation. They increase the enzyme affinity for each other, and the combination increases Vmax, substrate apparent affinity, and decreases AMP inhibition. Our results indicate that there are two distinct interacting allosteric sites for activation. Hence, pyruvate modulates E. coli glycogen metabolism by orchestrating a functional network of allosteric regulators. We postulate that this novel dual activator mechanism increases the evolvability of ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase and its related metabolic control.

The coordination of pyridyl-tetrazole derivatives containing ester substituents, at either the N-1 or N-2 position of the tetrazole ring, with copper(II) chloride results in the formation of either 1:1 or 1:2 copper to ligand complexes, depending on the ligand. However, when the ester functionality is changed to a carboxylate group, the resulting complexation reactions yield metal-organic frameworks. The resulting structures vary dramatically in pore size, depending on both reaction solvents and position of carboxylate group on the tetrazole ring. Despite the presence of sodium cations in the reaction mixtures, no sodium incorporation was ever observed in any of the complexes. …

Waveforms For Optimal Sub-Kev High-Order Harmonics With Synthesized Two- Or Three-Colour Laser Fields, Cheng Jin, Guoli Wang, Hui Wei, Anh-Thu Le, C. D. Lin

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

High-order harmonics extending to the X-ray region generated in a gas medium by intense lasers offer the potential for providing tabletop broadband light sources but so far are limited by their low conversion efficiency. Here we show that harmonics can be enhanced by one to two orders of magnitude without an increase in the total laser power if the laser's waveform is optimized by synthesizing two- or three-colour fields. The harmonics thus generated are also favourably phase-matched so that radiation is efficiently built up in the gas medium. Our results, combined with the emerging intense high-repetition MHz lasers, promise to …

(Η5‐Cyclopentadienyl)Tricarbonylmanganese(I) Complexes, Patrick N. Kirk, Michael P. Castellani

Chemistry Faculty Research

Since the initial preparation of (η5‐C5H5)Mn(CO)3 by Fischer and Jira in 1954, many methods have been developed for the synthesis of this compound (often referred to as “cymantrene”) and its C5 substituted derivatives. Interestingly, each of these preparations has at least one significant drawback from a preparative perspective (thallium reagents, high pressures, poor yields, or reactants that require significant preparative investment). Surprisingly missing from this collection of preparative methods is the direct reaction between commercially available Mn(CO)5Br and NaC5H5. In 1988, however, Smart and coworkers found …

Development Of High-Purity Optical Grade Single-Crystal Cvd Diamond For Intracavity Cooling, Andrew M. Bennett, Benjamin J. Wickham, Harpreet K. Dhillon, Ying Chen, Scott Webster, Giorgio Turri, Michael Bass

Publications

Microwave assisted chemical vapour deposited bulk diamond products have been used in a range of high power laser systems, due to low absorption across a range of wavelengths and exceptional thermal properties. However the application of polycrystalline products has frequently been limited to applications at longer wavelengths or thermal uses outside of the optical path due to the birefringence and scatter that are intrinsic properties of the polycrystalline materials. However, there are some solid state structures, including thin disc gain modules and amplifiers, that will gain significantly in terms of potential output powers if diamond could be used as a …

Solid solutions of Pb(8−x)Na2Smx(VO4)6O(x/2) were studied using X-ray diffraction analysis including Rietveld refinement and scanning electron microscopy and by measuring their electrical conductivity. Crystal structure of the solid solutions was refined and the solubility region 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2 was determined for samarium substitution for lead under the scheme 2Pb2+ + ◻ → 2Sm3+ + O2-. The influence of degree of substitution on the electrical conductivity of solid solutions was established.

Facile Synthesis Of Highly Efficient One-Dimensional Plasmonic Photocatalysts Through Ag@Cu2o Core-Shell Heteronanowires, Jinyan Xiong, Zhen Li, Jun Chen, Shanqing Zhang, Lianzhou Wang, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A novel class of one-dimensional (1D) plasmonic Ag@Cu2O core-shell heteronanowires have been synthesized at room temperature for photocatalysis application. The morphology, size, crystal structure and composition of the products were investigated by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, and UV-vis instruments. It was found the reaction time and the amount of Ag nanowires play crucial roles in the formation of well-defined 1D Ag@Gu(2)O core-shell heteronanowires. The resultant 1D Ag@Cu2O NWs exhibit much higher photocatalytic activity toward degradation of organic contaminants than Ag@Cu2O core-shell nanopartides or pure Cu2O nanospheres under solar light irradiation. The drastic enhancement in photocatalytic activity could be attributed to …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Reduced graphene oxide/cuprous oxide (RGO/Cu2O) composite films were directly synthesized on the surface of copper foil substrates through a straight redox reaction between GO and Cu foil via a hydrothermal approach. Characterization of the resultant composites with X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) confirms the formation of Cu2O and reduction of GO, in which Cu2O nanoparticles were well covered by RGO. The resultant composites (referred to as RGO/Cu2O/Cu) were directly used as electrodes for supercapacitors, and their electrochemical performance was assessed by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge–discharge (GCD), and electrochemical impedance spectrometry …

Optimization Of The Sequential Polymerization Synthesis Method For Polypyrrole Films, Danial Sangian, Wen Zheng, Geoffrey M. Spinks

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Polypyrrole (PPy) is widely used as an electroactive material and is most often synthesized using electrochemical polymerization. Recently, a new electropolymerization method [1] was introduced that involved preparing the PPy as a sequential series of electrodeposited layers with solvent washing in between each deposited layer. This method enabled high quality PPy free-standing films to be prepared in a relatively short time. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of the polymerization current density on the mechanical and electrical properties of the sequentially polymerized (SEP) PPy films. It was found that a low current density (0.1 mA/cm2) …

A Solvothermal Strategy: One-Step In Situ Synthesis Of Self-Assembled 3d Graphene-Based Composites With Enhanced Lithium Storage Capacity, Jingjing Ma, Jiulin Wang, Yu-Shi He, Xiao Zhen Liao, Jun Chen, Jiazhao Wang, Tao Yuan, Zi-Feng Ma

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A facile and controllable approach has been developed to synthesize three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based monoliths. Here, as a proof-of-concept experiment, self-assembled 3D CoO/graphene sheets (CoO/GS) composites with porous structures have been successfully fabricated in an ethanol medium by a one-step, in situ growth, solvothermal method. During the process, the in situ nucleation and growth of CoO particles on GS were tuned by the formation of a 3D GS network. In the as-prepared composites, the self-assembled 3D GS network around the CoO particles can not only provide a 3D conductive matrix, but also buffer the volume changes of CoO and restrain the …

Rapid Synthesis Of Li4ti5o12/Graphene Composite With Superior Rate Capability By A Microwave-Assisted Hydrothermal Method, Yi Shi, Jie Gao, Hector D. Abruna, Hua-Kun Liu, Huijun Li, Jiazhao Wang, Yuping Wu

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Li4Ti5O12 microspheres composed of nanoflakes wrapped in graphene nanosheets have been synthesized by an advanced microwave-hydrothermal (MW-HT) method for the preparation following by an annealing step. Microwave-assisted synthesis processes are appealing, as they can rapidly synthesize materials with a high degree of control of particle size and morphology at low cost. The resultant composite reveals a unique loose structure which could avoid the restacking of graphene sheets and offer rapid lithium ion diffusion paths. Therefore the Li4Ti5O12/graphene electrode has highly desirable properties: a specific capacity approaching the theoretical value, stable cycling, and exceptional rate capability. The composite also can be …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Monodisperse porous Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanospheres have been successfully synthesized by the solvothermal method. The diameter of the nanospheres can be tuned by controlling the reactant concentration. Lower reactant concentration is favoured for the synthesis of mesoporous Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanospheres with higher surface area. The electrochemical results show that mesoporous Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanospheres exhibit high reversible specific capacity (1110 mAh g-1) for Li storage and high capacity retention, with 700 mAh g-1 retained up to 50 cycles. The excellent electrochemical properties could be attributed to the large surface area and mesoporous structure. The results suggest that Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 could be a promising high capacity anode …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Highly fluorescent cysteine-capped CdTe/CdS core-shell nanowires were successfully synthesized by reacting CdCl2 with NaHTe in aqueous solution under refluxing at 100 °C for 140 min. On increasing the reaction time from 10 to 140 min, CdTe/CdS nanocrystals gradually grew into nanorods and eventually completely evolved into nanowires. The nanowires have amino and carboxyl functional groups on their surfaces and can be well dispersed in aqueous solution. The as-prepared CdTe/CdS nanowires show a fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of 7.25 % due to the unique nature of cysteine and the formation of a CdS shell on the surface of the CdTe core, …
