Fertilizer Recommendations, William O. Thom Dec 1980

Fertilizer Recommendations, William O. Thom

Soil Science News and Views

Fertilizer recommendations are interpreted from a soil test value. The interpretations are based on field research that compares crop yield to soil test levels and the amount of fertilizer applied. These field studies provide data to compare relative yield of a crop for a measured soil test value and fertilizer recommendations are then calibrated to these soil test values.

Methods For Biological, Chemical, And Physical Analyses In Reservoirs, Penelope E. Kellar, Sherell A. Paulson, Larry J. Paulson

Publications (WR)

This manual contains detailed descriptions of biological, chemical and physical sampling and analytical procedures used at the Lake Mead Limnological Research Center. The manual was prepared in response to requests made by numerous individuals involved in the Las Vegas Valley Water Quality Program. This manual represents what we consider to be a reasonably complete compilation of methods useful in studying both general and specific limnological questions. While each section is sufficiently detailed to be of use to investigators with little experience in limnological methodology, the methods can be used on a wide variety of lakes and reservoirs, with relatively little …

Trends In The Theory Of Atomic Photoionization, Anthony F. Starace Dec 1980

Trends In The Theory Of Atomic Photoionization, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

For VUV photon energies, detailed theoretical understanding of the photoionization process has been achieved for the case of a single electron ionized from one of the outer subshells of a closed-shell atom. This understanding is based qualitatively upon a few properties of realistic atomic central potentials and quantitatively upon a few distinct types of electronic interactions known generically as particle-hole interactions. Current theoretical research is mainly directed at understanding a broader class of atomic photoionization phenomena involving, e.g., open-shell atoms, electronic interactions not of the particle-hole class, real two-electron processes, and external electric and magnetic fields.

Stopping Power Of Matter For Alpha Particles At Extreme Relativistic Energies, P.T. Leung, M. L. Rustgi, J. E. Turner Dec 1980

Stopping Power Of Matter For Alpha Particles At Extreme Relativistic Energies, P.T. Leung, M. L. Rustgi, J. E. Turner

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The stopping power of matter for alpha particles at extreme relativistic energies has been calculated by incorporating the charge form factor. A table is presented for aluminum, copper, and lead. It is found that at the highest energies considered, inclusion of form factor reduces the mass stopping power by about 6-8% in comparison with that predicted by Bethe's relativistic formula.

The Role Of Technological Change, Robert U. Ayres, Steven M. Miller Dec 1980

The Role Of Technological Change, Robert U. Ayres, Steven M. Miller

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We develop an optimal growth model that includes several important new features. First, technological change is endogenously related to the growth of 'knowledge.' Investment may be directed either towards physical capital or knowledge (or both). Knowledge becomes an effective substitute for scarce resources by increasing the technical efficiency of resource utilization both for consumption and in capital. Nevertheless, a finite quantity resource must be embodied in capital and a finite flow is required for depreciation. Thus, there is an upper limit to technical efficiency and economic growth is thus ultimately limited by the availability of renewable resources. For a simple …

Magnetohydrodynamics In An Open Universe, Oscar Norris Dec 1980

Magnetohydrodynamics In An Open Universe, Oscar Norris

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A study of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in an open universe is presented. We discuss the data and justification behind our choice of an open universe for investigation in this thesis, as opposed to the closed universe theory, which is more appealing in some ways. We explicitly define all parameters used in the analysis of magnetohydrodynamic Bianchi Type V cosmologies and outline the formulation behind them. We then proceed to present a solution to a Bianchi Type V magnetohydrodynamic cosmology with a diagonal metric. After that, the results are compared with present observations. Lastly, we conclude with an assessment of the model …

High Flux Beam Source Of Thermal Rare-Gas Metastable Atoms, D. W. Fahey, William F. Parks, Laird D. Schearer Dec 1980

High Flux Beam Source Of Thermal Rare-Gas Metastable Atoms, D. W. Fahey, William F. Parks, Laird D. Schearer

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A high-flux beam source has been constructed for the production of helium, neon and argon metastable atoms. The source is a DC electric discharge maintained in an expanding gas. A metastable flux of 3.5*1014, and 7.2*1013 atoms s-1 sr-1 has been achieved with most probable energies of 66, 72 and 74 meV for the helium, neon and argon sources, respectively. Time-of-flight measurements showed the widths of the respective velocity distributions to be 45%, 27% and 27%.

Thermal Decomposition Kinetics Of Asf5-Doped Polyacetylene In Vacuum, T. Inoue, J. E. Osterholm, H. Yasuda, L. L. Levenson Dec 1980

Thermal Decomposition Kinetics Of Asf5-Doped Polyacetylene In Vacuum, T. Inoue, J. E. Osterholm, H. Yasuda, L. L. Levenson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electrical conductivity measurements, mass spectra of desorbing species, and ESCA surface analysis are reported for AsF5-doped polyacetylene heated between 50 and 130°C in vacuum. All measurements indicate first-order decomposition kinetics with activation energies between 13 and 20 kcal mole-1. Decomposition leads to the desorption of AsF3 and F2. Metallic arsenic remains in the polyacetylene as a decomposition by-product.

Dielectric Saturation In Dipolar Fluids. I. The Single-Molecule Distribution Function, John D. Ramshaw Nov 1980

Dielectric Saturation In Dipolar Fluids. I. The Single-Molecule Distribution Function, John D. Ramshaw

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The functional-derivative formalism is used to investigate the form of the equilibrium single-molecule distribution function n(1) in a finite fluid system of rigid polar molecules subjected to a strong external electric field that varies slowly with position. The investigation is based on the assumption that the long-range asymptotic behavior of the direct correlation function is independent of the external field, and is hence the same as in the unperturbed fluid. This assumption implies that n(1) has the form of a single-molecule Boltzmann factor in which the interaction energy is that of a deformable quasidipole with the local Lorentz electric field …

Iron And Life, Thomas Emery Nov 1980

Iron And Life, Thomas Emery

Faculty Honor Lectures

Iron, iron, everywhere but. . . . The plight of the ancient mariner surrounded by undrinkable water could hardly have been more frustrating than life on earth with respect to iron. Iron is the fourth most abundant element of the earth's surface, exceeded only by oxygen, silicon, and aluminum. Virtually all forms of life from the simplest bacteria to humans require iron to catalyze numerous and complex metabolic reactions. Because of the diversity and complexity of the role of iron in the life process, it has even been suggested that the origin of life on earth centered around the catalytic …

Determination Of The Total Grain Size Distribution In A Vulcanian Eruption Column, And Its Implications To Stratospheric Aerosol Perturbation, P. J. Murrow, William I. Rose, S. Self

Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications

Grain size analysis of samples representing all sampleable portions of the airfall deposit produced by the Fuego volcano in Guatemala on 14 October 1974 form the basis for estimating the total grain size distribution of tephra from this eruption. The region enclosed by each isopach has a particular average grain size distribution which can be weighted proportionally to its percentage volume. The grain size of pyroclastic avalanche deposits produced during the eruption are also included. The total grain size distribution calculated as a sum of weighted distributions has a median grain size of 0.8∅ (0.6mm) and a sorting coefficient (σ∅) …

Near-Bottom Seismic Profiling: High Lateral Variability, Anomalous Amplitudes, And Estimates Of Attenuation, R. C. Tyce, Larry A. Mayer, F. N. Spiess Nov 1980

Near-Bottom Seismic Profiling: High Lateral Variability, Anomalous Amplitudes, And Estimates Of Attenuation, R. C. Tyce, Larry A. Mayer, F. N. Spiess

Affiliate Scholarship

For almost a decade the Marine Physical Laboratory of Scripps Institution of Oceanography has been conducting near‐bottom geophysical surveys involving quantitative seismic profiling. Operating initially at 4 kHz and more recently at 6 kHz, this system has provided a wealth of fine scale quantitative data on the acoustic properties of ocean sediments. Over lateral distances of a few meters, 7‐dB changes in overall reflected energy as well as 10‐dB changes from individual reflectors have been observed. Anomalously high amplitudes from deep reflectors have been commonly observed, suggesting that multilayer interference is prevalent in records from such pulsed cw profilers. This …

An Abstract Model Of Unstratified Database System, Takayuki D. Kimura, Jerome R. Cox Jr., Will D. Gillett Nov 1980

An Abstract Model Of Unstratified Database System, Takayuki D. Kimura, Jerome R. Cox Jr., Will D. Gillett

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

A semantic data model is introduced with the following capabilities: (1) Abstraction mechanisms for aggregation, generalization and classification, (2) Unstratified control of the database content, (3) Refined control of intentional and extensional information, and (4) Extensive semantic consistency checking. The basic features of the model are illustrated through a scenario of interactions between the user and the database system (using the proposed model) for constructing a simple database on technical publications.
