Performing Distributed Quantum Calculations In A Multi-Cloud Architecture Secured By The Quantum Key Distribution Protocol, Jose Luis Lo Huang, Vincent C. Emeakaroha
Department of Computer Science Publications
Quantum computing (QC) is an emerging area that yearly improves and develops more advances in the number of qubits and the available infrastructure for public users. Nowadays, the main cloud service providers (CSP) are implementing different mechanisms to support access to their quantum computers, which can be used to perform small experiments, test hybrid algorithms and prove quantum theories. Recent research work have discussed the low capacity of using quantum computers in a single CSP to perform quantum computation that are needed to solve different experiments for real world problems. Thus, there are needs for computing powers in the form …
A Note On Umbilic Points At Infinity, Brendan Guilfoyle
A Note On Umbilic Points At Infinity, Brendan Guilfoyle
Publications
In this note a definition of umbilic point at infinity is proposed, at least for surfaces that are homogeneous polynomial graphs over a plane in Euclidean 3-space. This is a stronger definition than that of Toponogov in his study of complete convex surfaces, and allows one to distinguish between different umbilic points at infinity. It is proven that all such umbilic points at infinity are isolated, that they occur in pairs and are the zeroes of the projective extension of the third fundamental form, as developed in Guilfoyle and Ortiz-Rodríguez (Math Proc R Ir Acad 123A(2), 63–94, 2023). A geometric …
Euler’S Prime-Producing Polynomial Revisited, Robert Heffernan, Nick Lord, Des Machale
Euler’S Prime-Producing Polynomial Revisited, Robert Heffernan, Nick Lord, Des Machale
Department of Mathematics Publications
Euler’s polynomial f (n) = n2 + n + 41 is famous for producing 40 different prime numbers when the consecutive values 0, 1, …, 39 are substituted: see Table 1. Some authors, including Euler, prefer the polynomial f (n − 1) = n2 − n + 41 with prime values for n = 1, …, 40. Since f (−n) = f (n − 1), f (n) actually takes prime values (with each value repeated once) for n = −40, −39, …, 39; equivalently the polynomial f (n − 40) = n2 − 79n + 1601 takes (repeated) prime values …

A Survey On Training Challenges In Generative Adversarial Networks For Biomedical Image Analysis, Muhammad Muneeb Saad, Ruairi O'Reilly, Mubashir Husain Rehmani
Department of Computer Science Publications
In biomedical image analysis, the applicability of deep learning methods is directly impacted by the quantity of image data available. This is due to deep learning models requiring large image datasets to provide high-level performance. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have been widely utilized to address data limitations through the generation of synthetic biomedical images. GANs consist of two models. The generator, a model that learns how to produce synthetic images based on the feedback it receives. The discriminator, a model that classifies an image as synthetic or real and provides feedback to the generator. Throughout the training process, a GAN …

We present an all-fiber-based laser gas analyzer (LGA) employing quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) and a side-polished fiber (SPF). The LGA comprises a custom quartz tuning fork (QTF) with 0.8 mm prong spacing, two acoustic micro-resonators (mR) located on either side of the prong spacing, and a single-mode fiber containing a 17 mm polished section passing through both mRs and QTF. The SPF polished face is positioned to enable the evanescent wave (EW) to create a photoacoustic wave and excite the fundamental flexural mode of the QTF. Sensor performance was demonstrated using methane in nitrogen gas mixtures, with CH4" role="presentation" style="box-sizing: …
Chlorinated Water As A Source Of Chlorate Contamination In Farm Bulk Milk, Lorna Twomey, Ambrose Furey, Bernadette O'Brien, David Gleeson
Chlorinated Water As A Source Of Chlorate Contamination In Farm Bulk Milk, Lorna Twomey, Ambrose Furey, Bernadette O'Brien, David Gleeson
Physical Sciences Publications
The potential for chlorinated water to cause chlorate contamination of milk was evaluated at both laboratory and field level. It was found that for such contamination to occur, direct contact of water and milk was necessary. To minimise the opportunity for chlorinated water to cause chlorate contamination of milk, it is vital to ensure that milk handling equipment is engineered to provide for proper drainage of water and that all necessary steps are taken to prevent the adulteration of milk with water.

Until now there is no systematic study on the effect of the substrate type on the hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ) electron beam lithography (EBL) patterning process. We investigate arrays of line structures with varying width and spacing, starting at 10 nm, exposed at varying dose, and developed by salty NaOH and TMAH developers on group IV semiconductor substrates. We demonstrate that the HSQ EBL process on Ge is much more limited in achieving the smallest obtainable features, having optimal uniformity and fidelity, in comparison to Si. Monte-Carlo simulations of the e-beam/substrate interactions for “pure” Si and Ge substrates, and varying content …

In recent years, chlorate has become a residue of concern internationally, due to the risk that it poses to thyroid gland function. However, little is known about its occurrence in dairy products of Irish origin. To address this, a study was conducted in which samples of milk (n = 317), cream (n = 199), butter (n = 178), cheese (n = 144) and yoghurt (n = 440) were collected from grocery stores in the Republic of Ireland. Sampling was conducted across spring, summer, autumn and winter of 2021. Samples from multiple manufacturers of each respective dairy product were procured and …

Costs And Benefits Of Authentication Advice, Hazel Murray, David Malone
Department of Computer Science Publications
Authentication security advice is given with the goal of guiding users and organisations towards secure actions and practices. In this article, a taxonomy of 270 pieces of authentication advice is created, and a survey is conducted to gather information on the costs associated with following or enforcing the advice. Our findings indicate that security advice can be ambiguous and contradictory, with 41% of the advice collected being contradicted by another source. Additionally, users reported high levels of frustration with the advice and identified high usability costs. The study also found that end-users disagreed with each other 71% of the time …

Analyzing Syntactic Constructs Of Java Programs With Machine Learning, Francisco Ortin, Guillermo Facundo, Miguel Garcia
Department of Computer Science Publications
The massive number of open-source projects in public repositories has notably increased in the last years. Such repositories represent valuable information to be mined for different purposes, such as documenting recurrent syntactic constructs, analyzing the particular constructs used by experts and beginners, using them to teach programming and to detect bad programming practices, and building programming tools such as decompilers, Integrated Development Environments or Intelligent Tutoring Systems. An inherent problem of source code is that its syntactic information is represented with tree structures, while traditional machine learning algorithms use -dimensional datasets. Therefore, we present a feature engineering process to translate …

Investigating Chlorate In Water As A Cause Of Chlorate In Milk, Lorna Twomey, D. Gleeson, A. Furey
Physical Sciences Publications
The findings of this laboratory based experiment suggest that waters with increasing total chlorine levels will have increased chlorate levels and should that water come into contact with milk it has the potential to cause chlorate contamination of said milk. This study provides the information needed to design targeted field based experiments that are required to establish the trends and behaviours of chlorate in water when used as part of the cleaning process on dairy farms and its impact on milk residues and is requisite for the betterment of the dairy industry in terms of its understanding of contamination of …

The conventional quality control techniques for identifying the denaturation of biopharmaceuticals includes sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for identifying fragmentation, ion exchange chromatography and isoelectric focusing for identifying deamidation, reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for identifying oxidation, and size-exclusion HPLC for identifying aggregation. These stability assessments require essential processes that are destructive to the product tested. All these techniques are lab based and require sample removal from a sealed storage vial, which can breach the sterility. In this work, we investigate the heat- and surfactant-induced denaturation of an in-vial-stored model protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA), by analyzing its intrinsic fluorescence …

Programmable networking is evolving from programmable control plane solutions such as OpenFlow-based software-defined networking (SDN) to programmable data planes such as P4-based SDN. To support the functionality of the SDN, the correct view of the network topology is required. However, multiple attacks aimed at topology poisoning have been demonstrated in SDNs. While several controller-centralised security solutions have been proposed to defeat topology poisoning attacks, some attacks e.g., the Data Plane ARP Cache Poisoning Attack and the relay-type Link Fabrication Attack are difficult to detect using a fully centralised security solution. In this paper, we present the Security-Aware Programmable (SECAP) Switch—a …
A New Geometric Structure On Tangent Bundles, Nikos Georgiou, Brendan Guilfoyle
A New Geometric Structure On Tangent Bundles, Nikos Georgiou, Brendan Guilfoyle
Publications
For a Riemannian manifold (N, g), we construct a scalar flat neutral metric G on the tangent bundle TN. The metric is locally conformally flat if and only if either N is a 2- dimensional manifold or (N, g) is a real space form. It is also shown that G is locally symmetric if and only if g is locally symmetric. We then study submanifolds in TN and, in particular, find the conditions for a curve to be geodesic. The conditions for a Lagrangian graph in the tangent bundle TN to have parallel mean curvature …

An Extension Of Asgeirsson's Mean Value Theorem For Solutions Of The Ultra-Hyperbolic Equation In Dimension Four, Guillem Cobos, Brendan Guilfoyle
An Extension Of Asgeirsson's Mean Value Theorem For Solutions Of The Ultra-Hyperbolic Equation In Dimension Four, Guillem Cobos, Brendan Guilfoyle
Publications
In 1937 Asgeirsson established a mean value property for solutions of the general ultra-hyperbolic equation in 2n variables. In the case of four variables, it states that the integrals of a solution over certain pairs of conjugate circles are the same. In this paper we extend this result to non-degenerate conjugate conics, which include the original case of conjugate circles and adds the new case of conjugate hyperbolae. The broader context of this result is the geometrization of Fritz John’s 1938 analysis of the ultra-hyperbolic equation. Solutions of the equation arise as the compatibility for functions on line space to …

Experimental Analysis Of Gbm To Expand The Time Horizon Of Irish Electricity Price Forecasts, Conor Lynch, Christian O'Leary, Preetham Goving Kolar Sundareshan, Yavuz Akin
NIMBUS Articles
In response to the inherent challenges of generating cost-effective electricity consumption schedules for dynamic systems, this paper espouses the use of GBM or Gradient Boosting Machine-based models for electricity price forecasting. These models are applied to data streams from the Irish electricity market and achieve favorable results, relative to the current state-of-the-art. Presently, electricity prices are published 10 h in advance of the trade day of interest. Using the forecasting methodology outlined in this paper, an estimation of these prices can be made available one day in advance of the official price publication, thus extending the time available to plan …
Evolving To Non-Round Weingarten Spheres: Integer Linear Hopf Flows, Brendan Guilfoyle, Wilhelm Klingenberg
Evolving To Non-Round Weingarten Spheres: Integer Linear Hopf Flows, Brendan Guilfoyle, Wilhelm Klingenberg
Publications
In the 1950’s Hopf gave examples of non-round convex 2-spheres in Euclidean 3-space with rotational symmetry that satisfy a linear relationship between their principal curvatures. In this paper, we investigate conditions under which evolving a smooth convex rotationally symmetric sphere by a linear combination of its radii of curvature yields a Hopf sphere. When the coefficients of the flow have certain integer values, the fate of an initial sphere is entirely determined by the local geometry of its isolated umbilic points. A variety of behaviours is uncovered: convergence to round spheres and non-round Hopf spheres, as well as divergence to …

Cappa Publications
We present a design methodology for hybrid lasers to realise mode-hop free operation by controlling the cavity mode spacing. In this study, a compact hybrid photonic crystal laser (H-PhCL) was employed which allowed a reduction of the Fabry–Perot length of the laser cavity and eliminated the need for an active mode stabilisation mechanism in order to realise mode-hop free operation. The H-PhCL was formed by butt-coupling a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) with a two-dimensional silicon (Si) photonic crystal (PhC) cavity. Continuous stable single frequency operation with >40 dB side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of the laser was achieved for gain …

Integrating blockchain with energy trading is a new paradigm for researchers working in the field of smart grid. In energy trading, auction theory plays an important role to ensure truthfulness, rationality, and to balance utility of participants. However, traditional energy auctions cannot directly be integrated in blockchain based auctions due to the decentralized nature. Therefore, researches are being carried out to propose more efficient decentralized auctions for energy trading. Despite of all these advances, a greater standpoint that is not well-highlighted or discussed in majority of proposed mechanisms is the integration of green aspect in these auctions. Since, blockchain is …

In this paper, we propose to use deep reinforcement learning (DRL) for the task of cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) in a cognitive radio network. We selected a recently proposed offline DRL method called conservative Q-learning (CQL) due to its ability to learn complex data distributions efficiently. The task of CSS is performed as follows. Each secondary user (SU) performs local sensing and using CQL algorithm, determines the presence of licensed user for current and k-1 future timeslots. These results are forwarded to the fusion centre where another CQL algorithm is operating that generates a global decision for the current and …

Aerial Base Stations (ABSs) have gained significant importance in the next generation of wireless networks for accommodating mobile ground users and flash crowds with high convenience and quality. However, to achieve an efficient ABS network, many factors pertaining to ABS flight, governing laws and information transmissions must be studied. In this article, multi-drone communications are studied in three major aspects, survivability, coverage, and mobility laws, which optimize the multitier ABS network to avoid issues related to inter-cell interference, deficient energy, frequent handovers, and lifetime. The article includes simulation results of hierarchical ABS allocations for handling a set of users over …

The addition of contaminated powdered spices and seasonings to finished products which do not undergo further processing represents a significant concern for food manufacturers. To reduce the incidence of bacterial contamination, seasoning ingredients should be subjected to a decontamination process. Ultraviolet light emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) have been suggested as an alternative to UV lamps for reducing the microbial load of foods, due to their increasing efficiency, robustness and decreasing cost. In this study, we investigated the efficacy of UV-LED devices for the inactivation of four bacteria (Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Salmonella Typhimurium) on a plastic surface and …

Heterogeneous content-based traffic distribution motivates Information-Centric Networking (ICN), where content delivery is of primary interest as a prominent solution. However, current work does not address Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning for prioritized traffic, which is required for different applications and content types. This paper extends ICN with data delivery deadline awareness and shapes the forwarding decisions to ensure prioritized packet treatment. The proposed QoS Aware-ICN (QoSA-ICN) classifies requests' priority with their QoS requirements by codifying a QoSInfo object in interest/data packets. QoSA-ICN also extends the existing NDN transmission mode to a converged best route with multi-hop multi-route forwarding, to avoid …

Reporting granular energy usage data from smart meters to power grid enables effective power distribution by smart grid. Demand Response (DR) mechanism incentivize users towards efficient use of energy. However, consumer’s energy consumption pattern can reveal personal and sensitive information regarding their lifestyle. Therefore, to ensure users privacy, differentially distributed noise is added to the original data. This technique comes with a trade off between privacy of the consumer versus utility of the data in terms of providing services like billing, Demand Response schemes, and Load Monitoring. In this paper, we propose a technique - Differential Privacy with Noise Cancellation …

The growth of electronic devices in connected vehicles and their connections to the untrusted network, present unprecedented exposure to attacks. Therefore, a reliable and efficient cyber security framework is mandatory to protect vehicular networks against the cyber attackers. Thereby, we propose a cyber defense framework based on a hierarchical cooperative game to secure legitimate vehicles from attacks. In the proposed hierarchical game, there are two kinds of players, the head agent and secondary agents that cooperate between each other to detect, predict and react efficiently against suspected attacks. Microbial endocrinology, which is the study of neuroendocrine-based interkingdom signaling, provides a causal mechanistic framework for understanding the bi-directional crosstalk between the host and microbiome, especially as regards the effect of stress on health and disease. The importance of the cecal microbiome in avian health is well-recognized, yet little is understood regarding the mechanisms underpinning the avian host-microbiome relationship. Neuroendocrine plasticity of avian tissues that are focal points of host-microbiome interaction, such as the gut and lung, has likewise received limited attention. Avian in vivo models that enable the study of the neuroendocrine dynamic between host and microbiome are needed. …

Using e-beam lithography and reactive ion beam etching of a 120 nm amorphous silicon film, we fabricate a 30-µm spiral metalens that has a very short focal length that is equal to the incident 633 nm wavelength (numerical aperture about 1) and is composed of 16-sectored subwavelength binary gratings with a 220 nm period. Its unique feature is that the metalens generates a left-hand circularly polarized optical vortex with topological charge 2 when illuminated by a left-hand circularly polarized light but generates a cylindrical second-order vector beam when illuminated by linearly polarized light. Both for linearly and circularly polarized light, …
