Superfluorescence Polarization: Signature Of Collisional Redistribution, A. Kumarakrishnan, S. Chudasama, Xianming Han

Xianming Han

We have studied effects of magnetic sublevel degeneracy on the polarization of superfluorescent pulses generated on the Ca 4s4p1P1–3d4s1D2 transition at 5.5μm. These pulses were generated from a cell of length 50 cm by optically pumping calcium vapor on the 4s21S0–4s4p1P1 transition in the presence of Ar gas. The axis of ellipticity of superfluorescence (SF) polarization is oriented parallel to the axis of the pump-laser polarization at large detunings, and undergoes an abrupt rotation through 90° for detunings close to resonance. The distribution of populations in the magnetic sublevels of the 1P1 state can be estimated using a simple model …

Preparation Of Oriented, Fully Hydrated Lipid Samples For Structure Determination Using X-Ray Scattering., Stephanie Tristram-Nagle Aug 2014

Preparation Of Oriented, Fully Hydrated Lipid Samples For Structure Determination Using X-Ray Scattering., Stephanie Tristram-Nagle

Prof. Stephanie Tristram-Nagle Ph.D.

This chapter describes a method of sample preparation called "the rock and roll method," which is basically a solvent evaporation technique with controlled manual sample movement during evaporation of solvent from lipid/solvent mixtures that produces well-oriented thick stacks of about 2000 lipid bilayers. Many lipid types have been oriented using different solvent mixtures that balance solubilization of the lipid with uniform deposition of the lipid solution onto solid substrates. These well-oriented thick stacks are then ideal samples for collection of both X-ray diffraction data in the gel phase and X-ray diffuse scattering data in the fluid phase of lipids. The …

Dielectric Relaxation Behavior Of A Liquid Crystal Showing An Unusual Type Of Antiferroelectric-Ferroelectric-Antiferroelectric Phase Sequence, S. K. Kundu, B. K. Chaudhuri, A. Seed, Antal Jakli Oct 2013

Dielectric Relaxation Behavior Of A Liquid Crystal Showing An Unusual Type Of Antiferroelectric-Ferroelectric-Antiferroelectric Phase Sequence, S. K. Kundu, B. K. Chaudhuri, A. Seed, Antal Jakli

Antal Jakli

The temperature and frequency dependent dielectric relaxation behavior of a liquid crystalline (S)-(+)-1-methylheptyl 4-[2-(4-alkoxyphenyl) thiophene-5-carbonylthiooxy] benzoate system is reported. Interesting successive antiferroelectric-ferroelectric-antiferroelectric (AF-FE-AF) phase transitions are observed in this system resembling the successive phase transitions observed in crystalline Rochelle salt. The smectic-C*(SmC*) to AF1 phase transition (around 103.0 °C) is first order in nature, predicted from the use of Orihara and Ishibashi theory. It is also found that a contribution of the ferroelectric SmC* phase ordering penetrates even in the antiferroelectric AF1 (SmCA*) and AF2 (Sm …

Light-Induced Changes Of Optical And Electrical Properties In Bent-Core Azo Compounds, Antal Jakli, V. Prasad, D.S.S. Rao, Guangxun Liao, I. Janossy

Antal Jakli

We have studied the optical and electrical properties of two bent-core substances with an azo linkage in their cores. Pump-probe laser studies, direct textural observations, and spectrophotometric recordings show an initial decrease of light transmission, which at larger light intensities (similar to 1 mW/mm(2)) is followed by a bleaching. Simultaneously the electrical properties (electric conductivity, antiferroelectric polarization, switching threshold, and switching time) decreased monotonically with increasing light intensities. The monotonic decrease of electrical properties indicates that the darkening and bleaching have the same origin, namely, the photochemical isomerization of the azo linkage from the trans to the cis isomer. The …

Evidence For Triclinic Symmetry In Smectic Liquid Crystals Of Bent-Shape Molecules, Antal Jakli, D. Kruerke, Hans Sawade, G. Heppke Oct 2013

Evidence For Triclinic Symmetry In Smectic Liquid Crystals Of Bent-Shape Molecules, Antal Jakli, D. Kruerke, Hans Sawade, G. Heppke

Antal Jakli

The first experimental evidence for triclinic symmetry of bulk smectic liquid-crystal samples of achiral banana-shaped molecules is presented. This phase corresponds to the so-called Sm-C-G phase consisting of biaxial molecules and characterized by two tilt directions with respect to the layer normal: tilt of the molecular plane (clinic) and tilt of the molecular kink direction (leaning). Each smectic layer has a polarization component normal to the smectic layers (C-1 symmetry). The observations suggest that the phase tentatively labeled as B-7 is identical with the Sm-C-G phase.

Null-transmission ellipsometry and depolarized light microscopy have been performed on free-standing films of three achiral banana-shaped compounds in the B2 phase. Our results support a two-layer unit cell previously proposed to explain the observed antiferroelectricity in thin films and bulk samples. We have studied thicker films than previously reported and have found no deviations in the film structure from the earlier findings. Moreover, we can determine the layer spacing, the molecular tilt from the layer normal, and the three principal indices of refraction in the molecular reference frame.

Biaxial Nematic Phase In Bent-Core Thermotropic Mesogens, Bharat R. Acharya, Andrew Primak, Satyendra Kumar Oct 2013

Biaxial Nematic Phase In Bent-Core Thermotropic Mesogens, Bharat R. Acharya, Andrew Primak, Satyendra Kumar

Satyendra Kumar

A biaxial nematic phase had been predicted with D2h symmetry, wherein the mesogen’s long and short transverse axes are simultaneously aligned along the two orthogonal, primary and secondary directors, n and m, respectively. The unique low-angle x-ray diffraction patterns in the nematic phases exhibited by three rigid bent-core mesogens clearly reveal their biaxiality. The results of x-ray diffraction can be readily reproduced by ab initio calculations that explicitly include the bent-core shape in the form factor and assume short-range positional correlations.

We explored the orbital structure of FeTiO3 with polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectra complemented with electronic structure calculations. The electronic structure, near the bottom of conduction band, is composed of O 2p and Ti 3d orbitals. Ti 3d/4p hybridization dominantly lies on the ab plane. The highly delocalized Ti 4p orbital might hybridize with O 2p orbital and even extend to the next-neighbor Fe atom whereby establishing a linear orbital combination of Ti-O-Fe. A clear picture of the orbital construction in FeTiO3 will help to elucidate the paths of pressure-induced charge transfer and other physical or magnetic characteristics.

The BYU-Idaho Physics Department x-band microwave optics equipment was originally intended for use in classroom demonstrations. I evaluated this equipment for use in research. I designed and built additional equipment needed in order to perform attenuation and other experiments then used it to conduct research on the transmission properties of paper and other substances. The new equipment allowed me to create a standard experimental procedure, take reasonably accurate measurements, and reduce undesired standing wave effects. Mathematical and experimental analysis was done to determine the necessary parameters of the new equipment. The new apparatus is comparable to setups featured in published …

Flexoelectricity Of A Calamitic Liquid Crystal Elastomer Swollen With A Bent-Core Liquid Crystal, M. Chambers, R. Verduzco, J. T. Gleeson, S. Sprunt, Antal Jakli Sep 2009

Flexoelectricity Of A Calamitic Liquid Crystal Elastomer Swollen With A Bent-Core Liquid Crystal, M. Chambers, R. Verduzco, J. T. Gleeson, S. Sprunt, Antal Jakli

Antal Jakli

We have measured the electric current induced by mechanical distortion of a calamitic liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) swollen with a low molecular weight bent-core nematic (BCN) liquid crystal, and have determined, for the first time, the bend flexoelectric coefficient e(3) of such a BCN-LCE composite. In one method, we utilise air-pressure to induce a mechanical bend deformation and flexoelectric polarization in a BCN-LCE film, and then measure the polarization current as a function of time. An alternative technique uses a rotary-motor driven scotch yoke to periodically flex the BCN-LCE; in this case, the magnitude and phase of the induced current …

A Promising Change In The Selection Of The Circular Polarization Excitation Used In The Measurement Of Eu(Iii) Circularly Polarized Luminescence, K. Do, F. C. Muller, Gilles Muller Jan 2008

A Promising Change In The Selection Of The Circular Polarization Excitation Used In The Measurement Of Eu(Iii) Circularly Polarized Luminescence, K. Do, F. C. Muller, Gilles Muller

Gilles Muller

A judicious change in the selected transition used for circular polarization excitation will overcome the low oscillator strength limitation of the currently allowed magnetic-dipole 5D1 ← 7F2 (Eu(III)) transition chosen for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) measurement. The proposed allowed magnetic-dipole 5D1 ← 7F0 (Eu(III)) transition will facilitate the detection of CPL from the Eu(III) systems of interest. CPL on the acetonitrile solution of the chiral tris complex of Eu(III) with (R,R)-N,N′-bis(1-phenylethyl)-2,6-pyridinedicarboxamide ([Eu((R,R)-1)3]3+), recently suggested as an effective and reliable CPL calibrating agent, confirms the feasibility of the proposed experimental procedure. A comparable CPL activity exhibited by the acetonitrile solution of …

[1] Polarization Jet (PJ), also known as Sub-Auroral Ion Drift (SAID), events are supersonic westward plasma drifts on the equatorward edge of the diffuse aurora in the evening and nighttime sector. Their optical F-region signatures are weak 630.0 nm red arcs colocated with regions of fast convection. These weak arcs resemble Stable Auroral Red (SAR) arcs observed during the recovery phase of magnetic storms, but have lower intensities, shorter lifetimes, and occur without a significant heat flux from the magnetosphere. Previous model studies underestimated the brightness of weak SAR arcs. We present calculations showing that ion-neutral collisional heating and ion …

The ratio of the proton's elastic electromagnetic form factors, G Ep / G Mp, was obtained by measuring Pt and Pl, the transverse and the longitudinal recoil proton polarization, respectively. For elastic ep→ep, G Ep / G Mp is proportional to Pt / Pl. Simultaneous measurement of Pt and Pl in a polarimeter provides good control of the systematic uncertainty. The results for the ratio G Ep / G Mp show a systematic decrease as Q2 increases from 0.5 to 3.5GeV2, indicating for the first time a definite difference in the spatial distribution of charge …

Xanes In (Tmtsef)2re04: Polarization Dependence Of The Se K-Edge, Juana Vivó Acrivos, S.S. P. Parkin

Juana Vivó Acrivos

We have measured XANES (X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectra) near the Re Li (i=l,II,III) edges in (TMTTF)2Re04 and (TMTSeF) 2Re04 and the Se K edge in the latter compound. An important dependence of the XANES at the Se K edge on the polarisation of the incident beam with respect to the crystal axes was observed, whose interpretation can give information on the symmetry of the unoccupied conduction band states. The positions of the Re L edges were compared with those in several inorganic compounds containing Re in various oxidation states, and were found to be, within experimental error, the same …
