The Rapid Formation Of Functional Monolayers On Silicon Under Mild Conditions, Simone Ciampi, Erwann Luais, Michael James, Moinul Choudhury, Nadim Darwish, J Gooding

Michael C James

We report on an exceedingly mild chemical functionalization of hydrogen-terminated Si(100) with unactivated and unprotected bifunctional α,ω-dialkynes. Monolayer formation occurs rapidly in the dark, and at room temperature, from dilute solutions of an aromatic-conjugated acetylene. The method addresses the poor reactivity of p-type substrates under mild conditions. We suggest the importance of several factors, including an optimal orientation for electron transfer between the adsorbate and the Si surface, conjugation of the acetylenic function with a π-system, as well as the choice of a solvent system that favors electron transfer and screens Coulombic interactions between surface holes and electrons. The passivated …

The addition of N-(diphenylmethylene)glycinate esters (Ph2C=NCH2CO2R) to [60]fullerene under Bingel conditions gives [60]fullerenyldihydropyrroles and not methano[60]fullerenyl iminoesters [C60C(CO2R)(N=CPh2)] as previously reported. Unequivocal evidence for the structure of C60C(CO2Et)(N=CPh2) was provided by INADEQUATE NMR studies on 13C enriched material. New mechanistic details are proposed to account for the formation of [60]fullerenyldihydropyrroles and their reductive ring-opening reactions.

The properties of two forms of polyaniline (PAni) synthesised under acidic and basic conditions have been investigated both individually and as combined complexes. The PAni polymerised within alkaline media was redox inactive and non-conducting while the PAni emeraldine salt (ES) was electroactive and conducting. Raman, electron spin resonance, UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies were used to monitor the changes in electronic properties of these conducting polymer composites. Solution cast films of alkaline synthesised (A-PAni) with the PAni ES resulted in an increase in the high spin polaron population suggesting that it acts as a pseudodopant. The ability of the A-PAni to …

Conditions For The Assessment Of The Harmonic Compliance Of An Installation, Timothy J. Browne, Sarath Perera, Victor J. Gosbell Nov 2012

Conditions For The Assessment Of The Harmonic Compliance Of An Installation, Timothy J. Browne, Sarath Perera, Victor J. Gosbell

Associate Professor Sarath Perera

Methods of allocating harmonic emission limits to customer installations have evolved considerably, as evidenced by the development of harmonic guides such as IEEE-519 and IEC/TR 61000-3-6. However, there is only limited consensus on appropriate techniques validating compliance of installations with those limits. Existing techniques are reviewed and related problems are examined. Conditions which acceptable tests of compliance should meet are proposed.

Information hiding can be performed under the guise of a digital image. We consider the following scenario: Alice and Bob share an image and would like to use it as a cover image to communicate a message m. We are interested in answering two questions: What is the maximum amount of information that can be sent for a given level of degradation to an image? and How can this level of efficiency be achieved in practice? We require the recovered message to be the same as the embedded one. Our model begins with Alice compressing a message to obtain a …

The Effect Of Preparation Conditions And Biopolymer Dispersants On The Properties Of Swnt Buckypapers, Jenny Boge, Luke J. Sweetman, Marc In Het Panhuis, Stephen F. Ralph Jul 2012

The Effect Of Preparation Conditions And Biopolymer Dispersants On The Properties Of Swnt Buckypapers, Jenny Boge, Luke J. Sweetman, Marc In Het Panhuis, Stephen F. Ralph

Luke Sweetman

The effect of varying preparation conditions on the properties of buckypapers made using single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was systematically investigated. Changing the sonication time, final dispersion volume or membrane filter used to prepare SWNT-Triton X-100 buckypapers all generally had only a small influence on the density, thickness, contact angle and electrical conductivity of the resulting material. More significant changes were noted when the effects of variations in the above preparation conditions on the mechanical properties and surface morphology of SWNT-Triton X-100 buckypapers were investigated. However, the largest changes in properties were found when various biopolymers (bovine serum albumin, lysozyme, gellan …

Amyloid Fibril Formation By Bovine Milk Alpha(S2)-Casein Occurs Under Physiological Conditions Yet Is Prevented By Its Natural Counterpart, Alpha(S1)-Casein, David Thorn, Heath Ecroyd, M Sunde, Stephen Poon, John Carver Dec 2011

Amyloid Fibril Formation By Bovine Milk Alpha(S2)-Casein Occurs Under Physiological Conditions Yet Is Prevented By Its Natural Counterpart, Alpha(S1)-Casein, David Thorn, Heath Ecroyd, M Sunde, Stephen Poon, John Carver

Heath Ecroyd

The calcified proteinaceous deposits, or corpora amylacea, of bovine mammary tissue often comprise a network of amyloid fibrils, the origins of which have not been fully elucidated. Here, we demonstrate by transmission electron microscopy, dye binding assays, and X-ray fiber diffraction that bovine milk alpha(s2)-casein, a protein synthesized and secreted by mammary epithelial cells, readily forms fibrils in vitro. As a component of whole alpha(s)-casein, alpha(s2)-casein was separated from alpha(s1)-casein under nonreducing conditions via cation-exchange chromatography. Upon incubation at neutral pH and 37 degrees C, the spherical particles typical of alpha(s2)-casein rapidly converted to twisted, ribbon-like fibrils similar to 12 …

The battery performance of a modified Prius with a 5 kWh plug-in battery was documented for a year to determine the impact of environmental conditions and user attributes on vehicle performance. Both fuel economy and pure electrical efficiency were compared to ambient temperature. The fuel economy has a positive relationship with ambient temperature until approximately 70˚F where the efficiency begins to drop. Electrical performance has a positive linear relationship with ambient temperature. With the emergence of electric vehicles (EVs) and PHEVs from a variety of automotive manufacturers, information on EV and PHEV performance for consumers will become more important.

Equatorial Electricfields During Magnetically Disturbed Conditions, 1. The Effect Of The Interplanetary Magneticfield, Bela G. Fejer, C. A. Gonzales, D. T. Farley, M. C. Kelley, R. F. Woodman Sep 1979

Equatorial Electricfields During Magnetically Disturbed Conditions, 1. The Effect Of The Interplanetary Magneticfield, Bela G. Fejer, C. A. Gonzales, D. T. Farley, M. C. Kelley, R. F. Woodman

Bela G. Fejer

Radar measurements of E and F region drift velocities have been used to look for correlations between changes in equatorial electric fields and the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). The east-west component of the IMF appears to be unimportant, but the north-south component has some effect; rapid reversals from south to north are sometimes correlated with reversals of the equatorial east-west electric field during both daytime and nighttime. This is not always true, however, the IMF may reverse without any apparent effect at the equator. Furthermore, large equatorial field perturbations are sometimes observed when the IMF Bz is large and southward …

Simultaneous auroral and equatorial electric field data are used along with magnetic field data to study anomalous electric field patterns during disturbed times. During some substorms, accompanied by ring current activity, the worldwide equatorial zonal electric field component reverses from the normal pattern. This is interpreted as a partial closure of high latitude field aligned currents in the dayside, low latitude ionosphere. These currents flow westward across the dayside. In several cases the zonal equatorial electric field component was nearly identical in form to the zonal auroral component, indicating the close electrical coupling between these regions. Less certain, but equally …
