A Framework For Creating Active And Healthy Communities: A Case Study Of The Gold Coast, Bhishna Bajracharya, Linda Too, Isara Khanjanasthiti

Linda Too

Poor modern lifestyle choices have led to a burgeoning health concern for various government agencies prompting urgent review and action. Whilst the health sector has the primary role in addressing health issues, town planning can also contribute to better health by providing supportive environments for an active and healthy lifestyle. Local councils and other decision makers have a fundamental role in promoting healthy lifestyles among local community members through city planning and implementing physical activity and health programs. This research paper has two primary objectives. First, it develops an integrated 3-P (Place, Program and Partnership) framework for promoting active and …

Polypyrrole Doped With Redox-Active Poly(2-Methoxyaniline-5-Sulfonic Acid) For Lithium Secondary Batteries, Yang Yang, Caiyun Wang, Syed A. Ashraf, Gordon G. Wallace Mar 2014

Polypyrrole Doped With Redox-Active Poly(2-Methoxyaniline-5-Sulfonic Acid) For Lithium Secondary Batteries, Yang Yang, Caiyun Wang, Syed A. Ashraf, Gordon G. Wallace

Gordon Wallace

Polypyrrole is a promising electrode material for flexible/bendable energy storage devices due to its inherent fast redox switching, mechanical flexibility, easy processability and being environmentally benign. However, its low attainable capacity limits its practical applications. Here, we synthesise a polypyrrole/poly(2-methoxyaniline-5-sulfonic acid) (PPy/PMAS) composite by incorporating redox-active PMAS into a PPy matrix via an electropolymerization method. For comparison, polypyrrole containing the electrochemically inert dopant p-toluenesulfonate (PPy-pTS) was prepared under the same conditions. The resultant PPy/PMAS film shows greatly improved electrochemical properties by harnessing the contribution from PMAS, i.e. higher specific capacity, better rate capability and improved cycling stability when used as …

Understanding The Conducting States Of Active And Passive Switches In An Inverter Circuit Used For Power System Applications, Danny Sutanto, B.P. Divakar, K.W.E. Cheng Dec 2012

Understanding The Conducting States Of Active And Passive Switches In An Inverter Circuit Used For Power System Applications, Danny Sutanto, B.P. Divakar, K.W.E. Cheng

Professor Darmawan Sutanto

Bi-directional inverter circuits are commonly used in many applications in power systems, such as in FACTS devices, energy storage systems and active power filters. Many power engineering students however find it difficult to understand the conducting states of the active switches (transistors, IGBTs) and the passive switches (the antiparallel diodes connected across the active switches). It seems a mystery to them that power can flow from a lower voltage ac system to a higher voltage dc system to charge the energy storage system. This paper proposes a simple chart that intuitively explains how to determine the states (either conducting or …

Active Exploration Of Emerging Themes In A Study Of Object-Oriented Requirements Engineering: The 'Evolutionary Case' Approach, Linda L. Dawson Dec 2012

Active Exploration Of Emerging Themes In A Study Of Object-Oriented Requirements Engineering: The 'Evolutionary Case' Approach, Linda L. Dawson

Associate Professor Linda Dawson

The evolutionary case approach provides a framework for qualitative case study research in information systems (IS). It uses revelation, reinforcement, reflection and re-examination to explicitly explore emerging themes in interpretive case study research. The method is based on the progressive development of a theoretical model grounded initially in the literature and then refined using sequential case studies grounded in practice. The method addresses the gap which often separates data from conclusions in qualitative case study research by documenting the “revealed” and “reinforced” changes in the theoretical model as it evolves from the empirical data. The paper provides an illustrative study …

Fuzzy Control For Nonlinear Uncertain Electrohydraulic Active Suspensions With Input Constraint, Haiping Du, Nong Zhang Nov 2012

Fuzzy Control For Nonlinear Uncertain Electrohydraulic Active Suspensions With Input Constraint, Haiping Du, Nong Zhang

Dr Haiping Du

This paper presents a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) model-based fuzzy control design approach for electrohydraulic active vehicle suspensions considering nonlinear dynamics of the actuator, sprung mass variation, and constraints on the control input. The T-S fuzzy model is first applied to represent the nonlinear uncertain electrohydraulic suspension. Then, a fuzzy state feedback controller is designed for the obtained T-S fuzzy model with optimized H infin performance for ride comfort by using the parallel-distributed compensation (PDC) scheme. The sufficient conditions for the existence of such a controller are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Numerical simulations on a full-car suspension model …

Planning And Design Of Master-Planned Communities For Healthy Living, Bhishna Bajracharya, Linda Too Oct 2012

Planning And Design Of Master-Planned Communities For Healthy Living, Bhishna Bajracharya, Linda Too

Bhishna Bajracharya

Due to growing health concerns linked to inactive living, a number of new master-planned communities in South East Queensland are creating supportive environments for physical activities. Varsity Lakes in Gold Coast is an example of such community which provides both infrastructures and programs to encourage active living. The objective of the paper is to examine the relationship between built environment and healthy communities through a review of current literature. Synthesising these findings, a conceptual framework is developed for supporting active and healthy living in master-planned communities. The three key factors are 1) place; 2) program and 3) partnership. This framework …

An Epididymal Form Of Cauxin, A Carboxylesterase-Like Enzyme, Is Present And Active In Mammalian Male Reproductive Fluids, Heath W. Ecroyd, Maya Belghazi, Jl Dacheux, M Miyazaki, T Yamashita, Jl Gatti Dec 2011

An Epididymal Form Of Cauxin, A Carboxylesterase-Like Enzyme, Is Present And Active In Mammalian Male Reproductive Fluids, Heath W. Ecroyd, Maya Belghazi, Jl Dacheux, M Miyazaki, T Yamashita, Jl Gatti

Heath Ecroyd

Mass spectrometric analysis of a prion protein (PrP)-containing complex isolated from ram cauda epididymal fluid revealed a protein that showed homology to a carboxylesterase-like protein previously identified in cat urine (cauxin). Using anticauxin antibodies, immunoreactive bands were detected in corpus and cauda epididymal fluid from all mammals tested (ram, boar, mouse, and cat). In the ram, the protein was also present in seminal fluid but not found to be associated with sperm. The bands reacting with the anti-cauxin antibody coincided with those having esterase activity in a zymographic assay and its levels paralleled the esterase activity of native epididymal fluids. …
